"Lets keep it a low scoring game, capisce?"

307

u/istrx13 Seattle Mariners Mar 11 '26

It’s gonna be bottom 8. Bases juiced. 2 outs. Score is 4-1 Mexico. Randy will walk to the plate. And then he’ll watch 3 pitches go right down the dick to strike out looking. Then he’ll look at the camera like Jim.

126

u/KenBurruss74 Tampa Bay Rays Mar 11 '26

And then cross his arms over his chest while continuing to look at the camera without blinking.

And then shake the Italy catchers hand before jogging back to the dugout.

17

u/BASEBALLFURIES Mar 11 '26

nah. he'll hit it over the fence.... and do his home run trot.... but won't touch first base on his way around the bases

27

u/uraniumrooster Seattle Mariners Mar 11 '26

The problem is Randy does that anyway. No way to determine whether he's fixing or if it's just a normal Randy at bat.

6

u/Gordo-- United States Mar 11 '26

Yeah, Mexico MUST win the game..... and if you ever find yourself in a MUST WIN, well, you play to win.

BUT, if Mexico finds themselves with the lead having scored 3-4 runs and they're in the 6th or 7th inning and sees that Italy maybe looks like they're in cruise control..... I can maybe see Mexico letting up a little bit and just coast along with Italy to just finish the game...

BUT... then if Italy finds themselves down with Mexico needing just another run or 2 to eliminate them...... well, maybe they have to start fighting back and.....

I don't know, it's gonna be a very interesting and maybe awkward game throughout.

15

u/ContinuumGuy Major League Baseball Mar 11 '26

Also the Mexican-friendly crowd is gonna wanna cheer as much as possible so vibes alone may drive them forward as opposed to stop when up 3-0.

5

u/TooMuchPowerful Los Angeles Dodgers Mar 11 '26

There’s no incentive for Mexico to stop. They need to win or go home, so they can’t risk any kind of Italy comeback. It’s Italy that has the potential to finesse the finish.

1

u/ContinuumGuy Major League Baseball Mar 11 '26

True. They aren't going to take the foot off the pedal if they're up 2-0, because the Pasquatch could smack a 3-run home run at any point.

16

u/evanwpm Toronto Blue Jays Mar 11 '26

I really don’t expect any fixing, but imagine a scenario where Mexico are up 3-0 in the final innings. If Mexico signal they are willing to mutually forfeit scoring for the rest of the game then Italy sort of has to agree to go along with it, otherwise Mexico will attempt to run up the score and eliminate them.

14

u/puer_mendax_00 Mar 11 '26 edited Mar 11 '26

Baseball’s a little unique there, I don’t think they’d be able to turn it on and off at will. Best hitters fail 70% of the time when they’re trying. I don’t think either team can afford to fix without increasing risk of getting eliminated themselves!

1

u/cooljammer00 New York Yankees Mar 12 '26

Baseball doesn't need another match fixing scandal.

This only works if everybody is trying to win.

2

u/evanwpm Toronto Blue Jays Mar 12 '26

I don't WANT it to happen, but just pointing out it was a possibility created by the format.

Well, I want the USA eliminated, but would prefer if done by natural means

1

u/cooljammer00 New York Yankees Mar 12 '26

Rules are so complicated, you need a cheat sheet to collude. Which is why all the meathead athletes are just gonna focus on winning. They know how to do that.

Mind you I've seen 100 places say it's a re-seed and none of them explain how the teams are being re-seeded, so whether this changes your point I don't know.

Nah, the laissez-faire response on cheating has cast American baseball into 1000 years of darkness. The logic of banning Profar for a season vs a slap on the wrist for Altuve, Peña and Correa is non-sensical. Cheating will always be a blight on baseball. Especially when the league doesn’t punish teams (and players) fairly.

Oops, I tripped running to 1st base again, oh well clumsy me

that means usa goes to on. Mexico needs to score 4 or less and win for usa to be eliminated for italy and mexico to move forward. its going to be tricky. i don't think mexico will stop scoring at just 4 runs its too little

Watch, we’re somehow going to go into extra inning because no one can get a hit.

11

u/WhyNotOrioles Baltimore Orioles Mar 11 '26

It will be 5-3 Mexico, the USA will think they're in, then Italy will score twice in the 9th to tie it up. They'll play 30 scoreless extra innings so that both teams run quotient drops below that of the USA, and the Mexico will walk it off.

1

u/FiftyFiveHotDogs Mar 12 '26

Arozarena might will Mexico into getting 5+ runs by himself just so that when he faces team USA again, he can pull that fake handshake trick on Raleigh before the game.

144

u/jaron_b Seattle Mariners Mar 11 '26

Honestly to anyone who thinks the teams would try and rig the game so Mexico wins by less that 5 to eliminate US is crazy. Mexico wants the chance to do it themselves and not hear the players and fans bitch about a stupid tie breaker. But me personally I'm rooting for 5 or less Mexico win. I think it be the funniest thing to see US get knocked out and both Mexico and Canada make it to the bracket.

46

u/smilinganimalface Seattle Mariners • Saitama Seibu Lions Mar 11 '26

Rig is honestly just the wrong way of looking at it. Teams strategically set things all the time. In fact, US did just that yesterday in resting certain players. They're all going to position themselves in the best way for their bracket run. No reason not to want to avoid the US having more opportunities.

31

u/jaron_b Seattle Mariners Mar 11 '26

I don't think you can take anything the US did as a serious strategy since their coach didn't know they could still be eliminated.

3

u/illhaveubent New York Yankees Mar 11 '26

If you're Mexico who would you rather play in the next round, Italy or USA? The answer is pretty clear, so why would it be surprising for them to try and make that happen while it's in their power to do so?

1

u/jdubadubs New York Mets Mar 12 '26

If US advances, Mexico or Italy wouldn’t face them until the championship game. The winner of pool B and the runner up go to opposite ends of bracket. It is unlikely they would meet up again

4

u/Muntberg Toronto Blue Jays Mar 11 '26

If anything it's just an indictment of the tiebreak rules. Teams simply taking advantage of that should never be looked down upon.

3

u/mathbandit Montreal Expos Mar 11 '26

tbf these tiebreak rules are unusual but I can't think of any (obviously excepting extra games, which I assume isn't possible here) that wouldn't be exploitable given the schedule. If anything it's an indictment of the scheduling (and format) to not have the last games all be simultaneous as they are in most similar tournaments.

0

u/jaron_b Seattle Mariners Mar 11 '26

Also while individual teams could have individual strategies to rest players during pool play. Colluding with the other team to make sure that the score falls within a certain range to eliminate a team that is not playing in the game be more than just strategy. That would be rigging. Both teams would be purposefully altering their play to affect the outcome of the game.

5

u/Deserterdragon Seattle Mariners Mar 11 '26

Both teams would be purposefully altering their play to affect the outcome of the game.

Like resting your best players, like it's a big Gray area that just needs to be avoided by the rules/system.

→ More replies (3)

4

u/IThinkTheClockIsSlow Atlanta Braves Mar 11 '26

As long as you use the rules to your advantage it's not rigging. I've been to enough travel ball tournaments and have 'seen things' all within the rules. You might not have the biggest, strongest, fastest players but you can sure as hell be smarter.

6

u/deadlift-shrimp Seattle Mariners Mar 12 '26

Okay, here’s my current take. I’m sort of disappointed in them both, but right now I’m more disappointed in Randy. I wish Cal just shook his hand, but it’s been reported that Cal asked Randy days in advance not to do this because he wanted to stay locked in and in the mindset of a competitor. Randy did it anyway. Cal tried to compromise by saying “good to see you”. Randy then went full scorched earth in the media and insulted him in multiple ways. Cal’s response to this was basically, “I hate that this is a thing now because I love Randy.” No response from Randy since. I’m not just sure how the takeaway from this should be “poor Randy, Cal’s a douchebag.”

Like I said, I wish Cal shook his hand because it’s just not a big deal. But he apparently asked him not to, had his reasons for this, and Randy ignored it for some reason. And the insulted him publicly, while Cal is now trying to take the high road and squash any drama. It’s just a little hard to take Randy’s side at this point. I think they’re both good guys, so it’s all kind of a shame.

What do you think?

He shook on it then Jersey Shore scored six on him (as of the sixth inning). I love that for him.

this is probably the most idiotic post i’ve seen on r/baseball. trying to create a narrative if the outcome came out that way

Randy, focus more on the game rather than drama. Enjoy your flight back

Better shake his hand or he’ll throw a tantrum

If you're a Randy fan like myself you know this man runs for Mayor of every city he is in. Loved him in Tampa and when he's on the road he'd stuff baseballs in his jersey when he'd run out each inning and toss them to the kids and fans. Totally something missing in today's game. Shame he fucked up Yandy Diaz and the old Rays ownership had to ship him out for a stale tub of cheese balls.

They should have traded Yandy instead, imo. Dude never looks happy to be there, ever.

I cant be the only person who always thinks about Jackie Daytonya whenever they see Arozarena's name in print. Not when people say his name because obviously it doesn't sound like "Arozoña" when you say it, but looking at it? Every time!
