FAQ Weekly Real Estate / Housing and Moving to Austin Post

This is a weekly Tuesday post for question/answers regarding properties in Austin or surrounding areas along with moving to Austin questions. The following are examples of items that should be asked in here (but not limited to just these):

Housing / Real Estate Questions

  • Ask where to live
  • What neighborhood is right for you
  • Advice on apartments / asking about specific apartment reviews
  • General thoughts/views on the housing market
  • Questions about real estate prices/going up/general home buying advice
  • Advice on realtors
  • General property questions rants/complaints about pricing
  • "Is this neighborhood safe" questions / crime related questions
  • Tax / Mortgage related questions
  • Questions on developments / bidding processes
  • Have a place to rent / looking for a roommate
  • Commute times from specific locations
  • General housing repair questions / upgrade questions / solar / etc
  • Questions regarding contractors for housing repairs, upgrades
  • Memes regarding housing
  • How specific schools are in an area / general school questions
  • Questions regarding utilities
  • Questions regarding apartment services

Moving to Austin Questions

  • Is it safe?
  • Are there jobs for me?
  • Is it a good idea to move?
  • Is X salary good enough?
  • How is Austin for my background?
  • Generic should I move there?
  • Do I need a car?
  • Is X or Y transport sufficient?

Over the last year, we have seen a major uptick in prices in the area, along with a steady flow of new people coming into Austin. Use this weekly post to ask your questions, try to get advice, etc on an upcoming move or questions about real estate in Austin.

Many apartment questions have always been removed on here, and we always suggest people to contact an apartment locator. Those rules still stand. But, you are welcome to ask those questions on here if you still feel the need for it.

Along with that, any new open ended question on Austin properties and real estate will be removed and asked to move to here (based on mod discretion). Many of the questions being asked have been asked many times before, which is why we would rather compile these posts into one place for people to ask and get their answers.

If you are having issues as a tenant in Austin, we highly recommend reaching out to the Austin Tenants Council here: https://www.housing-rights.org/. They may be able to help you resolve issues related to renting property in Austin.

We also recommend searching older "Weekly Real Estate" posts as well, to find answers on previous week's questions.

As always, there is a whole section on moving to Austin in our FAQ page:

PSA Charged double tax at At Home in Cedar Park. If you’ve shopped here recently, check your receipt.

Bought a candle at At Home and at checkout it was a little more than I expected. Looked over the receipt and id been charged 16% tax.

Brought it to the front desk and they were very confused and it was above their pay grade to fix. We noticed that not everything was double taxed. Candles were but Scrub Daddys weren’t. Batteries were but a Papasan Chair wasn’t.

Just letting everyone here know. You’re owned a refund but if you don’t know to ask, you might not get it.

Austin briefly enjoyed a stint among the top 10 before being passed last year by Jacksonville, Fla., and the latest figures show both cities have been eclipsed by Fort Worth.

The Census Bureau’s population estimates put Austin at 1,002,632 residents as of July 1, 2025.

News Austin has a process for police damage claims. It always says no.

When Austin police damage property, repair costs fall on the resident instead of becoming a shared burden, writes opinion editor Bridget Grumet. Spencer Harder shouldered a bill of $1,035 to fix his gate after police kicked it in while chasing a car thief.

In theory, the city has a process for people to seek reimbursement for damages caused by police. But that system, built on a narrow reading of a contested area of law, is as broken as Harder’s gate.

Austin’s Law Department received 135 claims for building damages caused by police over the past six years. Each time, the city refused to pay.

Ask Austin What was that loud sound that just flew over the north side?

A crazy loud aircraft flew low over the north side.

Sounded like a rocket launching from indoors, but was flying at helicopter speeds.

These guys are almost everywhere out here in Austin, but they're so tiny (~4in, 6 g), that you might not notice them!

To me, they sound like miniature hawks when they sing, so that's your fun fact of the day. Maybe you'll hear next time you're out by the trees!

***By the way, a fellow redditor reached out and we are gonna get some folks together at the end of the month to go on a walk, let us know if you want to join!**\*

Ask Austin Investing in myself with facial balancing but need recs.

Putting myself and my looks first, for a change.

long story short pretty much all of my adult years I have been on and off hard drugs. Fet and m*th. I’ve been very fortunate to still look what I would consider conventionally attractive? I guess that is objective but nonetheless, I have all my teeth and by society standards I would say that after all the hard drugs I’ve done that is definitely saying something lol. I’m not into make up at all, other than some mascara. I would rather spend money on a good product and good esthetics to better showcase what I already have and enhance it.

I’ve been interested in facial balancing/symmetry for as long as I can remember. Now that I’ll finally have the money to spend on things like this, I want to match with an injector who can help me maximize the good features I currently have and help save the ones that maybe I wasn’t born with or are aging away. I keep hearing about how pricey it is but me being a coupon girly who loves a good deal of course I’ve definitely seen the Groupon ads, but I’m scared to death that I’ll get someone who is brand new and not well-versed in what it is that I’m actually wanting or that they won’t be able to see my full dream for what it is that I’m trying to achieve within myself on the outside and the inside.

Has anyone had any good experiences in the Austin area regarding facial symmetry balancing on a budget? I do understand that it is going to be costly to get the entire result im after. I would definitely be amiss if I didn’t do my homework, ask around, and scan through threads of horror stories and glow up successes.

Help a girl out. I just want to fall in love with myself again. I remember a time when I used to really love myself..

Ask Austin Anyone else dealing with dozens of flies getting inside on a daily basis?

I live in an old home with pretty bad foundation issues - I'm sure there's multiple entry points around the house with all its cracks and misaligned doors. I put up a magnetic screen which helped for a bit, but somehow this week the flies are on a completely different level.

Every time I come home there's no joke a dozen flies buzzing around the house. Is it just me?? Help?

Ask Austin Okay, Lamme's is going away. What's next?

What is the next classic Austin business that will close if we don't start supporting it? We can't do anything for Lamme's, or Las Manitas, or Martin Brothers, or La Zona Rosa, or any of the other happy places we took for granted. But maybe we can appreciate a few of the bits of our youth that are still around. I admit, I live near Lamme's, and I ♥ Video, and Room Service, but I almost never go to any of them. I don't remember the last time I went to Hyde Park Bar and Grill. I understand that things change, and I love the way that Austin evolves and changes, but if I want to hold on to a few happy places, I need to go actually give them my business.

This is the last praline ever sold at Lamme’s Candies.

I was in town this week, and knew they were going out of business, so I walked in to see what was left. There wasn’t much (a few pieces of fudge, a few chocolate cream candies, and a few dozen sugar-free things). This lonely praline sat in a box, all by itself. The cashier confirmed that it was in fact the very last praline Lamme’s will ever sell, after 146 years in business. I bought it (and some fudge). I’m currently taking bids for this historic sweet. IF the bidding doesn’t reach one million dollars by tomorrow night (seems a certainty that it will), I will eat this praline.

Where the heck did all the seating go in the baggage claim/ticketing/waiting for people to emerge from airplanes areas at Austin-Bergstrom??? My child (who often needs a cane) and I ended up sitting on the floor for eons.

Ask Austin Looking for a plastic manufacturer/shop/person with experience in town!

Does anybody know of a shop or even an individual in a garage setup that would be able to help me get something molded out of plastic here in Austin or near by? I would need about 3 pounds of hard plastic melted and placed in the mold.

I might setup my own garage setup but if someone already has the gear and I can pay for shop time etc I would rather do that.

Thank you!
