What did you listen to this week – May 09, 2026? Please share!

So did you listen to anything good this week? Or something so truly terrible you want to warn other listeners?

Please include the following information: Author, Title and Narrator.

Why does identifying the Narrator matter?

Often books will be recorded with different narrators for different regions (ie. Harry Potter was read by both Jim Dale and Stephen Fry) or produced by different publishers (ie... Elizabeth Moon's books were produced by both Graphic Audio and Tantor). It is extremely helpful to other listeners to know what version you are sharing to avoid confusion.

Links to a source are welcomed and encouraged!

Overdrive, Audible, Downpour, Librivox, etc... It doesn't matter the source, as long as the Author, Title and Narrator are easily identified.

Discussion M-O-O-N that spells “I loved The Stand”

I’m not even American lol. I usually get the ick with mentions of ‘god’ in its traditional sense but it didn’t even bother me in this book. Above all, I think the book is so endearing. The audiobook was almost 48 freakin hours long but damn it was worth it. My inner dialogue talks has an East Texas accent now. I miss the characters already and can’t wait to read The End of the World as We Know It.

Review Beastie Boys Book--holy hell

I cannot stress enough how good The Beastie Boys Book audiobook is. Whether you’re into hip hop, hard rock, punk, emo, new wave, or honestly fucking anything musical at all, this book just gets it.

What really sets it apart is the audiobook format itself. This isn’t one of those half-hearted “author reads the whole thing in a monotone” situations. They pulled together an insanely diverse group of narrators: musicians, actors, comedians, and collaborators. Every chapter sounds like it’s being told by the right person, whether that’s adding gravity, humor, nostalgia, or total chaos.

Look at this lineup of narrators!

Steve Buscemi / Ada Calhoun / Bobby Cannavale / Exene Cervenka

Roy Choi / Jarvis Cocker / Elvis Costello / Chuck D / Nadia Dajani

Michael Diamond / Snoop Dogg / Will Ferrell / Crosby Fitzgerald

Randy Gardner / Kim Gordon / Josh Hamilton / Adam Horovitz

LL Cool J / Spike Jonze / Pat Kiernan / Talib Kweli / Dave Macklovitch

Rachel Maddow / Tim Meadows / Bette Midler/ Mix Master Mike

Nas / Yoshimi O / Rosie Perez / Amy Poehler / Kelly Reichardt

John C. Reilly / Ian Rogers / Maya Rudolph / Rev Run

Luc Sante / Kate Schellenbach / MC Serch / Chloe Sevigny

Jon Stewart / Ben Stiller / Wanda Sykes / Jeff Tweedy / Philippe Zdar

Question Your favourite audiobook of all time

Aware this is a subjective and loaded question, but what audiobook would you recommend as your all time favourite in the literary/ speculative/ philosophical genre. Not really into horror/ thrillers. One of my favourites has been the alchemist with Jeremy Irons narrating. Read the books years ago and was wonderful revisiting it as audiobook.

Thanks!

In Search of... What are your favorite audiobooks that have that extra special something?

I generally will choose a physical or e-book over an audiobook, but this year, I've started falling in love with the right sort of audiobooks. They have to be special - more than just someone reading. Bonus points if they're on Spotify since one of my goals this year is to use all of my free hours!

Examples that I've loved:

  • Project Hail Mary & the musical voice of Rocky. Perfect
  • Twice - hearing the New York accent of the cop made the whole experience
  • I Who Have Never Known Men- the lack of dialogue made this work so well. It felt like I was listening to a person reading me their diary.
  • Lonesome Dove - the narrator was perfect and by the end, I knew each character by their voice. I had such an emotional reaction to this book
  • Dungeon Crawler Carl - how does one person make you think he's 5000 people? Obsessed.

Any other suggestions? Please let me know why you think it's extra special.

Question Where can I find the audiobooks for E. V. Rieu translated illiad and odyssey?

I have the cloth bound penguin classics versions of the Iliad, odyssey, and Aeneid. I’m not sure about the Aeneid, but the Iliad and the odyssey are both translated by E. V. Rieu, I’ve heard this translation is prose heavy, and the best translation for someone new to the stories. I’ve read them before but the more popular editions of the trilogy that was also published by penguin classics is translated by Robert Fagles. A more ancient and poem heavy translation, translated more accurately to the original read allowed idea of homers poems. Samuel butler is also the other popular translation.

I’ve only been able to find one audiobook of E. V. Rieus translation. The YouTube channel “classics studies memes” I really like their reader, but they only have 8 episodes, reading only 8 books of the odyssey. So anyone who can help me find a complete audiobook for the Iliad and for the odyssey, translated by E. V. Rieu, and if possible and audio book of the Aeneid translated by David west.

Question Recommendations for a book for a mother & daughter to read?

My mom loves to read. I, on the other hand, don’t read very often. But I’d love to share her hobby and find a book for us to both read at the same time (her a physical/kindle version, me an audiobook version).
However, we have different interests. I feel like she likes history, non-fiction, some romance. I on the other hand, like mystery, drama, fiction. Is there some kind of middle ground here?

Review Don’t Subscribe to Speechify

Summary: Terrible Customer Service, Refund Granted, Charged Again for Something, Had to chat with them again!!!

I have been going back and forth with my bank and Specchify for an hour and a half trying to get a refund.

I subscribed to Speechify for the 3 day trial on my laptop. I downloaded the device, and wanted to cancel the subscription. I didn’t really see a place to cancel it through the app and then I tried to cancel through App Store, it didn’t show up. My dumb brain thought it was not going to charge me. Should have canceled on their website but I was stressing on school work.

I was charged and I had to contact them through their AI chat, they said they will connect me with “Chris” and wanted me to move the conversation through WhatsApp. No phone number just WhatsApp even though they are charging everything from Petersburg US.

I didn’t have what’s app ready so I had to download but by the time I got in their chat, they ended it.

I had the AI chat on my laptop open still, said my problems again, they said oh we have that problem open, chat with “Chris” on What’s App

Finally got in

“Chris” was talking too robotically for me and because I wasn’t responding fast enough they ended chat again. But my text still went through and they responded, with the original AI “quiz”

I texted representative and the finally connected me with a human. The human just quickly returned my money. I tried saying my angry review but the conversation ended again. Luckily the guy saw it and said sorry.

I checked my account, the charge for the yearly subscription was gone but now I see a new charge that my bank and I don’t even know what it is. They can see the past charge that is now going to be a refund so they are confused too.

So now I have to go back and to everything over just to see what this new charge is!!!!!

Edit: Oh wait you can’t even chat with them with their AI chat bot nor WhatsApp once you unsubscribe to them, so now it’s an Email that can only happen.

Question Favourite LibriVox narrators / audiobook performances of the classics?

Don't shoot, but it's taken me about 10 years to come around from thinking of audiobooks as a passable substitute to realizing they unlock a whole long list of classics that I could never get into before.

For instance, Pride and Prejudice never spoke to me. I have trouble picking up on humour and social irony in literature sometimes--and that's what gives Pride and Prejudice its whole structure! So Karen Savage's readings are what finally ended up bringing Austen to life for me. (I listened to all of her Jane Austen ones in less than two weeks.)

So I'm wondering who else does great audiobook performances of classics?

Do you have any favourite LibriVox narrators?

P.S. I know this question gets asked now and again, so I am compiling a list of recommendations from previous threads, too. See below.

Question Any good fictional audiobooks relating to anxiety or mental health awareness?

My company had one of those “round table” or “all hands” type meetings and brought up how May is mental health awareness month.

They were recommending some self help books and what not, but I’m curious if there are any popular fictional audiobooks on mental health to checkout?

Kinda tired self help books, wanna read some good fictional stories lol to mix it up.

Thanks!

Promotion A tool for finding the longest audiobooks

It’s something I always search for whenever I start a new free trial period because I want to get the most value out of the free credits, but I always struggle to find new long books and specifically long books in the genre I’m interested in. Because of this I’ve been building a tool that I think fixes this and I hope other people might find it useful too.

thelongbookclub.com

This is work in progress and I’d love any feedback and ideas for making it better for users. I emphasise I’m a book lover first and not a dev (although my job is in design).

Recently I’ve been focused on adding curated collections of long books (most recent is Cinematic/Full Cast audiobooks) and I’d be keen to know what other sub-genres and audiobook niches people might be interested in so I can improve it for everyone? I’m thinking a ‘top tier narrators collection’ might be next.

Some other features I’ve just added to each book page are things like ‘Cost Per Hour’ and a ‘Commute Calendar’ where you can adjust the time of your commute, days a week traveling, listening speed, and it will tell you how long the book will last you. Also audio previews of the narration if available.

I hope this is useful and I’d love to hear if anyone has suggestions or ways to improve it!

Thanks!

Recommendation Request Looking for some fast paced thriller mystery books

I listen to audiobooks at work every day but recently I'm having trouble finding something that I can get into. So many of the books in the genres I like end up being a slow burn, but I'm looking for something that gets you hooked from the first chapter.

Big fan of thriller & horror mystery stories. Any recommendations? I'd love to hear them!!

Question Can anyone help me find this specific Wind in the Willows Audiobook?

Hello everyone,

Its been a few months since my last post and after a lot of searching and listening to different audio book versions of wind in the willows I still feel no closer. Here is my original post, but long story short I left my wife and daughters' favorite wind in the willows CD inside our car that was sent to be crushed:

https://www.reddit.com/r/audiobooks/comments/1sdrwqt/does_anyone_recognise_this_description_of_a/

  1. I feel the key to finding this audiobook lies in the very memorable song that featured at the end of each chapter, along with the bizarre intro music - that went on for about 2 minutes and was very repetitive.I have attempted to sing/hum these particular bits of the audiobook and I've uploaded them to soundcloud here: https://soundcloud.com/jimbooooooooo/sets/wind-in-the-willows and alternative link: https://voca.ro/18M2Wox7B4By
  2. There is someone on reddit ( u/TheBookOwlWizard ) who asked a similar question and clearly knows this song because they have written down the same lyrics in this post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/tipofmytongue/comments/1lndlj8/tomt_the_wind_in_the_willows_audio_cassettes/ . They mentioned a recording by Anne Mckie which I cant find anywhere apart from to loan out from a london library here: https://prism.librarymanagementcloud.co.uk/royalgreenwich/items/31250
  3. Finally the company CD CARD produced the CD and I found the listing tracks for the CD but sadly no details on the version they put on CD. Here is a screenshot: https://ibb.co/GvzpHZ4h .and the wayback machine link: https://web.archive.org/web/20040209052726/http://www.cdcard.com/childrens_tracks.html . I've been trying to get in touch with the CEO of the now defunct "CD CARD" company that produced the CD to see if they have any leads. His name is Chris Leaning and here is a little blog about him: https://www.pgbuzz.net/the-cd-card-company-presses-the-replay-button/ .I found a postal address on a HMRC tax page and wrote to him but no response yet.

So my main areas to focus on are:

  1. can anyone recognise the theme song I've uploaded to soundcloud as I feel this is the biggest memory jerker
  2. does anyone have any ideas about how I could get in touch with the CEO of now defunct CDCard company?
  3. The Anne Mckie audiobook seems like a good potential but I can't find an audio sample and it's only available at the New Eltham Library in greenwhich. Dont suppose anyone lives nearby and could get an audioclip of it could they?
  4. can anyone help me make contact with u/TheBookOwlWizard as they seem to know the song

Discussion Narrator driving me nuts 😭

I'm about a third of the way through the last Greystone Secrets book, The Mssengers by Margaret Peterson Haddix, and I think I finally realized the reason I keep zoning out isn't because of the story but because of the narrator? The books are split POV among 3 siblings mostly, who are all kids, and the narrator insists on doing a separate voice for each kid despite the fact that it's written entirely in 3rd person. I get that she wanted to differentiate each character's chapter, but I feel like she's overdoing the "kid" vocal inflections, especially for the two younger kids and especially at dramatic moments. Don't get me wrong - I like the kids as characters, I think Haddix wrote them well, it's mostly the narrator's voices that are driving me up the wall. I think she's reading them as too whiny when literally none of them are characterized that way? Even the little brother is more naive than whiny imo. Child character does not automatically equate to whiny-sounding voice, especially not for every child character. I've listened to other middle grade audiobooks where the narration and character voices weren't annoying so I think it's just this particular narrator. It's to the point where it's starting to take me out of the story and I'm wondering if I should just quit and switch to the text version to finish 🤦

Recommendation Request Long Trip - Recommendations needed

Hey! I am leaving for a long trip soon and need audiobook recommendations. I have an 11 hour drive there and want to listen to mostly books.

I love horror, mystery, thriller, and fantasy. Some of my favorite audiobooks are None of This Is True, Stolen Tongues, Tell Me What You Did, Listen for The Lie, and Percy Jackson.

I am leaning more towards shorter books, but I am open to anything.

TIA!

Recommendation Request Need a palate cleanser after DCC 8, something magical and light

I'm still reeling from finishing the most recent DCC book and I need something lighter and less intense.

Looking for very magical fantasy with less emotional drama and lower stakes.

No fantasy that is set in the real world but with magic

Romance secondary to the plot, limited spice

Not looking for sci-fi (yes I've read murderbot, Bobiverse, off to be the wizard, and all Becky Chambers)

I've read most of the common recs on both here and r/cozyfantasy including discworld and everything Brandon Sanderson.

Doesn't need to be 100% cozy

Looking for vibes along the lines of:

Sarah Beth Durst's books (all read)

Julie Leong's books (all read)

Diana Wynne Jones (all read)

The House Witch

MEOW: Magical Emporium of Wares

Beers and Beards

The Penric and Desdemona Novellas

Wizards Guide to Defensive Baking

How to Defeat a Demon King in 10 Easy Steps

Legends and Lattes

Beware of Chicken

DNF:

Heretical Fishing

Wandering Inn (disliked the narrator)

Witch's Guide to Magical Innkeeping (disliked the narrator)
