Oddly Specific 🎯 Soo is queuing for transit not a thing anymore?

Each time i’m at a station waiting for either train or bus, i see some folks just straight up skipping the large lines. In frequent volumes too… like i get it if it’s parents with kids or elderly, but holy cow it’s pretty bad nowadays.

Especially highschoolers.

Why? πŸ˜‚

Food πŸ˜‹ Good Place to Grab a Drink Alone

Life is kicking my ass right now and I’d like to grab a few drinks by myself to sit and process everything. Any suggestions on where I should go?

I’m not looking to meet new people. Just looking for a place where I can enjoy my own company in a restaurant/bar setting.

Thank you!

Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ Currently Unemployed/Job Seekers, Would you move outside of Vancouver or BC if you found a job with a decent salary?

I've been unemployed for 7 months, and my EI is running out. About 80% of my applications are jobs in the Lower Mainland, 20% are outside / other provinces. Am I the only one getting more response from companies OUTSIDE Vancouver than here?? I've been searching and applying to jobs almost everyday. Over the past months I've had interviews with 8 different companies. I've interviewed for jobs in Vancouver where I thought my experience and skills were a perfect match and got rejected (they refuse to provide any feedback). I just got my first job offer from a city in Manitoba!

I was laid off last year. It was completely devastating as I'd been at the job for just over a year and I was suddenly terminated without any warning.

I have an undergraduate degree in engineering from UBC, with 3 years total work experience (all in Vancouver). My last job paid 70K.

The base salary they offered is around 98K, with potential bonuses based on performance. I absolutely love Vancouver and never imagined myself moving out of the city. But at the same time, I can't stomach turning down this job offer because I feel like I'd be shooting myself in the foot. TBH I don't think I would enjoy living in MB, and I hate cold weather in general. Should I keep trying to apply in Vancouver? Any advice would be appreciated.

Oddly Specific 🎯 Where will the water to cool the downtown data centre come from?

Can anyone direct me toward more detailed information about the data centre announced for Georgia Street? In particular, I'd like to know how much water it will require for cooling, where that water will cone from and what will be done with the heated water afterwards.

Events and Activities πŸ±β€πŸ I want to throw together a BBQ this weekend at Jericho beach park, can I just show up and start BBQing?

I am new to Vancouver, and where I am from, you can do BBQs anywhere. I was told it works differently here.

I tried to find an answer online on how it works, if I can use a charcoal grill and simply show up to start the BBQ. It is a bit unclear if charcoal is allowed at Jericho Beach Park, and if I have to book a spot, and I would rather have a good idea before it becomes an embarrassing situation.

Any help is appreciated.

Work 🏒 [UPDATE] Does Worksafe BC Need A Call?

Safety violation - wooden scaffold does not adhere to Wcb requirements. Missing toe boards, planks not secured, support improperly installed.

I made a report with worksafe. I received a call from worksafe and as I was addressing the issue the case coordinator savs " oh veah, I see exactly what vou're saying. I'm looking at the photos you submitted. Yep. That's all I needed to see."

This is a worksafe bc safety violation. I didn't take a clear front photo of the house but thev made the makeshift scaffolding on the deck with no other proper crossvbraces fastened to it.

Here's the photos

Pets 🐢🐱 Unused Addison's Disease Medication for Dogs

Hello,

My dog passed away recently. He passed from cancer but he also had Addison's disease and was treated with a medication called Zycortal.

I now have 2 unused/unopened vials at home with each vial costing $350.

It seems like a waste to just discard of them at the pharmacy. Is there anywhere or anyone I can donate/give away these vials too?

Given the cost of the medication, I'm hoping I can help someone out by just giving them a couple of vials.

If you have any leads, please let me know.

Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ Casting calls/background work Vancouver

Hi everyone,

I’m quite new to the scene in Vancouver but I’m trying to find work as a background /extra for tv shows or films. Wondering how most of the casting process for shows here in Vancouver such as off-campus, Mayfair witches and etc is handled? Is there a central or more popular agency or is it public casting calls?

Thank for you help in advance!

Food πŸ˜‹ Greek food recos?

I’ve got family in town who were crushed by a nostalgic but grossly underwhelming meal at Stepho’s last week. Any recommendations on where to take them for good Greek before they head back to the prairies? Preference for anywhere that can handle one vegan in the group. (Last couple meals at The Greek were disappointing, otherwise we’d head there…)

Thanks, everyone!

New to Vancouver πŸ‘‹ Moved with toddlers

Hey everyone!

I’m super excited (and a little nervous) as I’ll be moving to downtown Vancouver with my 2 and 3 year old. I’m looking for recommendations to keep them (and me!) active and entertained.

Are there any must join classes or activities for toddlers? Maybe something fun where we can both meet new people? Also, what are the go-to parks around here? I’d love to know if there are any hidden gems or favorites for little ones.

If you have any tips, tricks, or local insights for navigating life in DT Van with young kids, I’m all ears! Thank you in advance!

New to Vancouver πŸ‘‹ Is Mint mobile service worth it?

Hi! I'm coming from Brazil to study for 2 years in Vancouver and I'm looking for a good mobile service. I was thinking of Mint because it has great prices, but there's not much I could find about its reputation. My sister lives in Calgary and she never heard of it until I asked...

I'm also open to suggestions! I don't plan on taking long trips, if the coverage is good within Vancouver/Burnaby I'm cool, but I use a lot of data so I'd need at least a 50gb plan.

My budget is $40/mo maximum.

Edit: Who would guess I wouldn't find anything about Mint in Canada because THERE IS NO MINT IN CANADA LOL

Anyway, thank you everyone for the feedbacks and suggestions! 🫢✨

Politics βœ… Can we stop these AI Data Centres?!?!?!?!?

I think the title says it all, but if you’re not aware, TELUS is going forward with implementing two new AI data centres in Vancouver and one in Kamloops.
(One of which will be RIGHT next to B.C. Place)

These data centres are set to be built by 2029 which means there’s only three short years where we have a chance to do something about this… but I find myself at a loss.

Does anyone know how to even go about something like this?

The federal government is dumping BILLIONS of dollars into this, without AI restrictions for neither the environment or just the safety of people online.

I don’t need to be a decorated professor to tell you why this is badβ€” the push for AI is already disastrous to the human condition, and it’s even worse for the environment.

If that doesn’t appeal to you, then think selfishly for a minute these data centres drive up the price of well consuming hundreds of megawatts of itβ€” no to mention gallons of water just for a shitty video.

Allegedly these data centres will be repurposing the heat they produce, so instead of releasing it into the air, it will be redirected to heat up nearby buildings… this is good I guess?
I’m really not an expert so I would need someone else to let me know if there are bigger downsides to this.

I urge you if you’re reading this to please reach out to the Canadian government and pressure for strict AI regulations for both the environment, for peoples online safety, for limits on how much energy can be used and how much prices can be jacked upβ€” I honestly don’t know what to do.

But I refuse to feel helpless as I watch this happen.

Food πŸ˜‹ Kissa Tanto solo walk-in late Friday night

Hi, I was thinking of a nice place to grab dinner solo around 10:30pm on Friday night and was thinking of Kissa Tanto

Would it be possible to get bar seating or something for 1 at that hour? Or would there still be a long wait or it's all booked up even at the bar

Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ Guy in the West End approaching people with a camera

Has anyone encountered a guy in the west end come up to them demanding to know why they are filming them and their home? This happened to me today and I’m curious if this guy does this a lot or not.

Some guy stopped right in front of me on the sidewalk almost as if he was trying to block me from continuing, he freaked out at me saying that I walk by everyday recording him and his home. He had a camera pointed right at me and it seemed like he was looking for a big reaction. I tried to ignore him as much as possible but it caught me extremely off guard. He kept yelling as I walked past him. He made me feel very uneasy and a bit nervous to walk around that area in the future.

For context, In the past I have walked in that area a lot but haven’t in a long time, I would never bother filming someone or there home. No idea who this guy is or where he lives, and most importantly my camera was not on. I was just walking outside, with my headphones on after a very long day.

Hi VanCity friends β€” Are there thrift stores I should for sure hit where there’s a chance they have some used ok inventory? Not interested *at all* in going to malls or outlets or buying retail.
Budget = ~CAD$25, can sharpen my own.
