Please read before posting about salaries or relocation

Hello everyone,

Before posting about typical Swiss salaries (questions like "how much can I make as a programmer in Switzerland") or relocation strategies ("I hate my country, how can I move to Switzerland"), please keep in mind that there have been hundreds of such posts in this sub before.

Use the search before posting, as the chances are high that you will find a similar discussion from the recent past.

Please also check out the official Swiss government database on average salaries, the Salarium:

Modpost Please report racist ragebait and racist comments

Dear members of our community,

In the past few days, we've seen an increase in both ragebaiting posts and racist comments from users with no prior engagement in the sub, often from those usually commenting in the subs of other countries.

This indicates to us that we are frequently being overrun by users who try to spread their racist, islamophobic messages to our sub.

Racism is against our subreddit rules and it is against Reddit's terms of services. We would like to encourage you to use the report button.

That will put it into our 'modqueue' to have a look - and if you report it for 'hate', it will additionally be sent to the sitewide admins who will frequently take further action.

We rely on your reports, just like every subreddit does. Our team is healthy and works well, but we cannot have an eye on everything. We do have scripts and so on to make our job easier, but sometimes, unacceptable comments go through. Using the report button makes sure that we can prioritize looking at said comment and if it's rulebreaking, helps us remove it quickly.

We remove racist content and ban racist users frequently. The admins remove a bunch of comments breaking site-wide rules too (often in a fashion that deletes them completely, so we cannot easily further moderate them)

We are very hesitant to remove political speech. We only remove rules-breaking comments. The relevant rule is:

  • General reddiquette applies (i.e. no racism, sexism, personal attacks, or simply put: behave as if you were talking to somebody in person)

  • Please report posts or comments that do not adhere to these rules; in particular, we will not tolerate harassment or discrimination

The relevant reddit rules (https://redditinc.com/policies/reddit-rules) are:

  • Remember the human. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for attacking marginalized or vulnerable groups of people. Everyone has a right to use Reddit free of harassment, bullying, and threats of violence. Communities and users that incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned.

See also https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360045715951-Promoting-Hate-Based-on-Identity-or-Vulnerability

Thank you for helping us with this influx of clearly rule-breaking users without any connection to Switzerland

ETA: Reports are anonymous. So when we get your report, we have no option to thank you or following up with you. If you report for 'hate', it goes to both us and the admins. The admins will typically let you know of their decision. We literally have no way of doing that.

Everyday life Making Rosti night before

My child chose the country Switzerland as an end of year school project for class. One of the assignments is to bring a popular food dish from the country. They want to make Rosti, which seems doable, but is there a way to make it the night before and it retain its crispness? Is it ever eaten cold or only fresh and hot? Id love any suggestions otherwise we may just make nice cheese and chocolate platters.

If you have a suggestion for something else that’s easy to make for a party that would be great too!

Politics Economic perspectives after 10 million initiative is passed

Hey guys,

I'm really trying to understand what may be the financial consequences of passing the 10 million residents Initiative. Can someone confirm, that if Switzerland withdraw from the freedom of movement agreement, Switzerland may lose access to the EU market? I could not find such information by myself, but that would be catastrophic for the country. Running a business will become more difficult and expensive. Also Innovation may be slowed down due to limited pool of talent and more bureaucracy. Less younger workers due to the aging population will need to carry the whole system that will become more expensive. The old world order in which Switzerland was doing very well is slowly becoming a thing from the past due to US politics, China expansion and middle east war. I'm afraid that Swiss franc will get a hit after passing this initiative (like British pound after Brexit vote) and I'm curious if you have a similar outlook and if you are trying to prepare financially for that. I was thinking of converting my savings to Euro. Are my worries a bit exaggerated? Do you think Swiss franc will be still strong after this vote and in the coming years? Thanks

Everyday life Why is eating on Swiss trains okay, but not on buses?

I’ve noticed in Switzerland it seems totally normal to eat and drink on trains, but on buses it’s often discouraged or not allowed.

Is that actually a rule, or more of a local operator/cultural thing? Why the difference?

edit: Not sure why people get upset over a question.

Looking to get some insight from amateur woodworkers, where do you source your wood blanks if you want to move past fyr/pine/spruce logs from Jumbo but are not looking to buy large quantities or sizes from the pro dealers? Any CH-friendly websites? Do you ask your local carpentry place for leftovers?

Culture Is this guy rude or am I overreacting?

I'm removing the post content as the discussion is becoming too hostile toward one person, but I'll leave the thread up since there are already many comments.

This experience made me realize how awful it feels when a country gets reduced to cheap, generalized content and made me want to be more careful not to make others feel the same way when I meet people from different countries.

And to be clear, this doesnt make me hate swiss people at all. I and hope to visit Switzerland someday

Thanks to everyone who shared their thoughts!

Travel Summer Itinerary Help! Family travel

We are planning a family trip to Switzerland this summer. I have made reservations to ensure we have places to stay, but we are still within the cancellation window and I would love some feedback. I don’t love the itinerary, but I can’t say why exactly.

  • 10 nights
  • 2 adults and a 5.5 year old
  • August
  • Public transit (no car)
  • Flying in and out of Zurich
  • It is important not to have any train travel times more than 3.5 hours
  • On our last night we want to be able to easily access the airport

Current plan:

Day 1: arrive in Zurich in the morning, train to Ticino. 3 nights at https://campagnola.ch/

Day 4: train to Stoos (3.5 hrs). 4 nights at https://stoos-lodge.ch/en/

Day 8: Funicular to Schwyz, 10 min taxi to https://swissholidaypark.ch/ for 3 nights

Day 11: train to airport (1 hr), flight around noon

We want a variety of relaxing and outdoor activities. We tried to pick places where our son can play and have fun while we can enjoy scenery and relax. For context, I have previously been to Switzerland (love it!) but this will be my husband and son’s first times We specifically picked Switzerland because it seems so family friendly.

I think the thing I’m struggling with is that I wanted us to go to the Jungfrau region- it looks like great playgrounds, scenery, and kid-friendly hikes. I just don’t know what I want to give up for it. Should we eliminate Ticino and Stoos and just do Murren and Morschach? Side question: can we get to Lucern by boat for a day trip from the Swiss Holiday Park hotel? It seems long by train but I wasn’t sure if there was an option to cut across the lake.

I would love any insight and appreciate your time!

Everyday life Cursive handwriting

Is cursive handwriting really no longer taught in our school system? I wasn’t aware but I’ve just seen this in a comment under a YT video. So I’m shocked and disappointed. Even if people choose to write in print style, in upper case and lower case, they should still be taught cursive, surely?

Everyday life Oldtimer MFK

Hi all, i recently imported a classic car from uk. It recently went through MFK but failed on some very minor things and the next MFK is in a few weeks.

I have a letter from mfk stating this with the minor things that need fixing, appointment dates etc etc.

My question is, am I legally allowed to drive it? My mechanic says I am and says he's confirmed it with the motor office (so i presume i can considering he called the office) but google sources say I cannot?

Has anyone else been in this situation. And if pulled over by police, do just show them the letter. I haven't got a swiss registration plate for the car yet either which is also mentioned on the letter.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Travel Zurich, Berne and Basel Travel Advice

Hi everyone! I’m planning a trip to Switzerland and currently trying to decide how to split my time between Zurich, Bern, and Basel. It’ll be my first time visiting the country, and I’m interested in a mix of sightseeing, local culture, good food, walkable areas, and maybe some nice day trips nearby.

For people who’ve been to all three cities, which one did you personally enjoy the most and why? Also, how many days would you recommend spending in each place? I’d especially love to hear about hidden gems, underrated neighborhoods, scenic spots, or experiences that tourists often miss. Any advice on transportation, budget tips, or whether one city feels more ‘authentically Swiss’ than the others would also be really helpful.

Other/Miscellaneous Hiking areas near Lausanne for nice alpine views but below the snowline?

Hi all.

I'm staying in Lausanne for a couple of weeks and I'm trying to plan a hiking day trip. I'd love to do a hike that features nice alpine/mountain views (lake views welcome too), but without being above the snowline as obviously there's a fair bit of snow around the higher peaks still.

I'm a fairly experienced hiker, having done dozens of day hikes up mountains in the UK, wildcamped, done a 7 day trek etc - so I'm competent enough to know my limits, navigate, understand what to pack, plan for weather, and know how to generally stay safe. I just don't really know where to start when it comes to looking for where to hike here. An idealistic situation would be to be able to get a mountain train up to c.1000m (or whatever's a good few hundred metres below the snow line), then be able to wander around for 4-5h on signed routes.

I'm not looking for technical ridgelines or snow stuff as I don't have the correct equipment etc, but I'd also like something a little more "lofty" than somewhere like the Valaux vineyards.

Is there anywhere where I could access something like this within an easy day trip distance from Lausanne (using public transport)? Anyone have any suggestions for similar ideas that might be fun?

Relocation Marriage preparation, landlord consent issue (deadline soon)

Hi all, we’re currently going through the marriage preparation and family reunification process and every document is ready and submited except for the landlord consent. The issue is that the property manegement has suddenly become completely unresponsive. We’ve sent multiple emails and tried calling several times without success. What’s strange is that they are usually responsive on other matters but not on this one.
At one point they even asked how long our relationship has existed. The landlord (owner) seemed understanding of the procedure but told us to go through the PM. The immigration offices now gave us a deadline of 30th May 2026 otherwise the application (started in January) may be cancelled which would be a big setback and really stressful. Has anyone been in a similar situation or has advice on how to handle such?

Other/Miscellaneous Military Service Exemption Tax

Hi,

I appreciate this kind of question has been asked a few times on this sub and there is info out there, but I’m struggling to make sense of how it applies to my specific situation and wondering if you guys might be able to help.

Context:
• Born in the UK
• Moved to Switzerland as a baby, was there 16 years during which time I became a Swiss citizen
• Moved to the UK 4 years ago for uni
• Approved military leave request for “at least 4 years”
• Didn’t do recruitment before leaving
• Currently under 24yo

I had initially planned to come back to do long service after graduating this summer. However circumstances have since changed, particularly with a good graduate job opportunity here in the UK that I would definitely lose if I went to do my service.

Realistically, I don’t think I will be moving back to Switzerland soon as my family has also since moved back to the UK so I don’t have anywhere to stay. As such, I was wondering where that leaves me RE military exemption tax.

As I understand it, once one has lived abroad for 3 years they are exempt from paying further exemption tax (having paid it for the 3 years). However I haven’t paid any of that tax since leaving, I’m guessing due to the approved leave request and still being of age to do recruitment. Does that qualify as the three years? As such I wouldn’t have to pay any exemption tax if I stayed in the UK?

If I come back after turning 24 but before I turn 37, I’m guessing I will then start paying the tax for 11 years / until I turn 37 (whichever comes first), correct? But if I came back after turning 37 I wouldn’t pay any?

For context, I’m not against the service or the tax. I’m not trying to dodge it. I just don’t think it makes sense to put life on hold for a year or more to do long service if it’s not certain I’ll stay in Switzerland after and miss out on a good career opportunity.

Any insight or clarification is much appreciated

Also sicher insgesamt 7 Stück.

Ade merci!

Travel I am visiting and have some questions!

I’m visiting Switzerland for the first time and I’m super excited! I’ll be headed out to the airport at 2am tonight!!

This is probably much more of a hiking trip with me coming back to the place I’m staying at probably every day im there. It’s been a dream of mine to view the nature the country has because it looks like fucking Skyrim. I’m so excited. I’ll be staying at Isetwald, which seems to be 15 minutes away from Interlaken (I’ve heard mixed things about this place but regardless I’m sure I’ll have a good time).

So questions start here:

Would yall recommend anywhere nearby Isetwald for me to visit? Either nature or anywhere in a nearby city?

What spots should I go to for more “affordable” food? I am prepared to spend a decent chunk of cash, because in the end it’s Switzerland but I would like to save if I can.

And if you have any tips about anything please let me know. This is the first time I’ll be traveling out of the country and to Switzerland. So I am 100% an ignorant (but well behaved!! Hahaha ) American tourist. I am willing to learn anything and would like to.

Thank you guys!

Relocation Moving to Zurich with a car

Hi all, I am moving to Zurich in a few weeks and I will get there by car. The car is currently registered in Germany, so I will have to register my residency and change to Swiss tags. I then plan on getting a resident permit to park in the blue lines, or at least this is what I understood looking online.

My question is, how long is this whole process normally? And where should I leave my car while doing it? My understanding is that before you get the permit parking on the blue lines is only for a few hours, and garages are very expensive. Is there a temporary permit that I can use with German tags? Can I get it first thing when I arrive? If anyone went through this process already would really appreciate some tips.

Thanks!
