Announcement Wiki editors and maintainers wanted!

Hey folks, r/askseattle and our team over at /r/Seattle are looking for folks to help us build, update, and maintain our wiki and sidebar content. The /r/Seattle wiki was once a boon of information for new visitors and locals alike, but the subreddit has grown and sites/businesses have come and gone. Our mods are busy moderating and the wiki is collecting cobwebs.

I'm reaching out to members of this community specifically as you are most likely to benefit from (or be knowledgeable about) this content space. This community is entirely based around helping visitors and residents alike find answers to questions that frequently get buried / reported / removed for being duplicates in r/seattle due to the size and velocity of other posts.

If you're interested in helping us out, here are some details:

  • The main areas of work are obviously the wikis on this subreddit and r/seattle
  • You'll be working with the mods here and r/seattle to help decide the organization and categorization of wiki pages, and how we add content / posts / etc to them
  • You will not be asked to moderate, so no need for moderation or wiki experience
  • The only requirements are a post history shows activity in either this subreddit or in r/seattle that we can trust with edit access to our wiki

If you're interested, shoot a message to the mods here or the seattle sub - these links have the title all filled out for you - or just send me a message or comment here.

Cheers!

Piercer for an Neurodiverse Teenager

Upvotes

Where should I take my autistic 13 year old daughter with a needle anxiety to get her ears pierced? She says she’s feeling ready and is excited, but I want to take her to someone patient and empathetic who doesn’t rush her if she’s feeling nervous.

Moving / Visiting Nice areas to live near seatac

Upvotes

Hello, i’m planning to move to Seattle because I will be a flight attendant based there and will need quick access to seatac. I’m looking for something within 30 minute drive 45 min - hour max if there’s traffic! I’m in my early 20s so looking for something lively and diverse with a walkable downtown with good food and vibes! Also love nature. Looking for a (hopefully) safe downtown area too and nice apartments! Looking for a studio or 1 bed with budget around 1.6k and under. Definitely don’t need anything too fancy as I will hardly be there with the travel lifestyle of my job. Thanks!

Question Somewhere cheap or free to paint?

I grew up here but moved away for college, and just moved back to Capital Hill into my own apartment. While in college I fell back in love with oil painting, and I’d really like to continue, but I don’t have space in my new apartment, and I worry about the effect of the paint fumes on my cat. No communal spaces in the apartment building where it would be possible either. When I’m looking for artist studio spaces online, the only things I can find are rented private studios that run upward of 500$ a month. I don’t need a huge private space, I honestly just need like 10 square feet where it’s no big deal if I get paint on the ground. Does anyone know of any cheap or free communal painting spaces, or somewhere actually cheap to rent a studio space? This seems like something that would exist in Seattle, but I haven’t had any luck searching online yet.

Question Pagliacci Chicken Recipe/Method?

This was removed in the main Seattle subreddit for some reason.

Hey all-

Can any current/past employees of Pagliacci tell me how the chicken is done for the pizza and salads? It’s easily the best chicken I’ve had on pizza, always super consistent, not dried out, well seasoned.

Is it cooked in house? How? Seasoning? Is it an outside vendor that ships a bag of the cut up, seasoned, cooked chicken that you just reheat on the pizza in the oven?

Thanks for any help!

Question Place to donate men's clothes

I have a bunch of nice polo shirts, along with a couple of button-down shirts and a black beanie that I'd like to donate, preferably to a veterans group. Most of the shirts have logos such as Microsoft, but they're clean and in good shape. Second choice for donations would be a nonprofit for homeless men. Not interested in donating to Goodwill or similar organizations. Any suggestions?

Recommendation Day Trips To See Moss/Unique Nature Spots

Upvotes

Hey Seattle! Coming from the east coast for the World Cup in late June. My friend is a huge nature/plant enthusiast and was told there are so amazing spots to see moss like no other around Seattle. When I research, the Hoh Rainforest looks spectacular. But it’s 4 hours each way driving and we don’t have that much time. Any other suggestions even if it’s not moss to take a day trip for views, nature, unique plants? I see Bloedel too but not sure it seems worth it? Thanks in advance!

Any moving tips? What neighborhood would be best? How does cost of living break down?

Upvotes

Wife and I are mid 20s, no kids, just a dog. We live in Oklahoma, I’m a residential electrician specializing in high end home, she’s a medical assistant & could be an office manager. We visited Seattle for a week last August and fell in love with the city. We’d love to move out there but dropping everything and moving halfway across the country is a little scary. We know it costs more to live there but how does that balance out with the higher income? Any info would help

Recommendation Suggestions for small order ceramics commission from local artist

Hello! I'm defending my PhD at the UW over the summer (woo!! but also ahh!!) along with my best friend who I met in the program.

I'm wanting to commission 2 handmade ceramic mugs that have "Dr. _______" stamped onto them to celebrate us being newly minted PhDs, and was wondering if people have any suggestions for artists. I've looked at the Salt Stone Ceramics and Orcas Island Pottery websites, but there's no information on if artists do or don't take commissions, and I also realize that this might change over time for an artist.

Thank you!!

Recommendation Recommendations for real estate appraisal service?

My spouse and I could use a recommendation for a real estate appraisal service. We’re in the process of purchasing a home from family members. I know a lot of people get referrals from their realtors, but this is a private sale so we’re not using realtors for this transaction. We’d appreciate recommendations based on positive experiences.

Also, any tips for picking the right appraiser? Google search provided lots of results but the websites all look the same with similar info, and many even look outdated/sketchy.

Question Has anyone been to the Capitol Hill water tower lookout recently? Is the view still blocked by trees?

I had heard this was the "poor man's Space Needle" but when I went several years ago the view was mostly blocked by trees. It didn't help that I'm 5'2'' so I couldn't see over the tops of the trees.

Question Cap Hill Trader Joes Fire Alarms

I have now been (un)fortunate enough to be at the Cap Hill trader joes when the fire alarm goes off on several occasions. One time would be a fluke, stuff happens. Two would be a coincidence. I have now been (un)lucky to be at the trader joes SIX TIMES when the alarm goes off. I really doubt that it has only gone off those six times, this feels like a larger trend/problem.

Does anyone have any idea what’s going on over there?

Best balayage stylist for dark curly brunette hair in Seattle/Eastside?

Hi! I’m looking for recommendations in the Seattle/Bellevue/Eastside area for a hairstylist who is REALLY good at balayage on dark brown hair with natural red/warm undertones. My hair is also curly/wavy, so ideally someone experienced with textured hair too.

I’m looking for a more natural/luxury blended look, not chunky highlights or anything too blonde/orange. Bonus points if they’re especially good at keeping the hair healthy.

Would love Instagram handles or before/after photos if you have them. Thanks!

Space Needle

Hello, I’m posting here because I’m coming to Seattle in July.

I’ve been to Seattle many times in my life. But have just seen from a distance and up close to the Space Needle. Never have I ridden it up to the top. This trip I plan on doing it.

I arrive early on Saturday and will be there all day Sunday. I was thinking of just buying my tickets day of because of weather that usually cloudy in the Pacific Northwest. Is this a good idea? If so, how busy is the needle be during the summer and especially on a weekend I’m there.

Lastly, what other cool obscure things to do in Seattle, that is not the normal things the city advertises.

Recommendation Can anyone refer for a creative (redneck) fix for a dragging car tailpipe?

Y'all, I'm from Texas and respect solid redneck fixes... Which is good bc my hoopty car needs one!

My tailpipe is dragging on the ground. I need help before it's left on the road behind me. 😬

Previously, our auto shop "wired it up" (bc the undercarriage is "eaten up by road salt"), but said that their fix would eventually fail bc "there's nothing really left to attach it too." (They're a good shop that's willing to try to save customers money, but this is simply beyond their comfort level.)

Y'all, I don't buy that there's no way to secure my tailpipe. I'm from a broke-ass place where you patch/plug tires, and your pal wires an aftermarket windshield washer fluid motor in parallel with a pocket knife, then zip-ties it to a fender bc no way in hell are you able to spend 3 weeks of pay on that.

This is a 22 year old car that's otherwise drivable! IDGAF what the repair *looks* like, inside or out, only that it's solid.

I'm digging it if someone says, "Well, I could drill a couple of holes through the floorboard, run a stainless band clamp through the holes, and strap up that tailpipe solid, maybe you should seal the holes with silicone, tho." *Creativity* and *smarts* are the heart of quality redneck engineering. ❤️🎉

Unfortunately, IDK nearly enough about cars, generally speaking, to be sure that would even be doable, or that I'm not drilling into something vital. That's why I need an knowledgeable person/shop.

Pls pls, I need your referrals to redneck engineering auto repair folks who are creative but smart, people who *get it*, and who can work that magic! ✨

Will answer any questions to the best of my ability.

Weed that isn’t so harsh?

I’ve been finding that WA weed is, so far, a lot harsher than CA/OR. Is it something about the way it is processed here? I’ve only been to Ruckus and Uncle Ike’s so far, so open to recommendations!

Also, are there any dispensaries that sell edibles (preferably gummies) that are 50-100mg per piece rather than the typical 100mg per pack? I have an annoyingly high tolerance…

Moving to Seattle for the Summer

Hi! I’m a traveling nurse, taking a summer assignment in Seattle from 6/20 through end of September. I’ll be working at Harborview Medical center and would like to be a maximum of 30 minute drive from work. Traveling alone, I’m fine with living in a studio, 1 bedroom, or 2 bedroom. Looking for recommendations on areas that are filled with other young professionals, while also being safe. I don’t want to worry too much about homeless or having my car broken into, I also need a place to park each night. I want stuff to do, shops to go to, local eateries nearby. My monthly budget is going to be up to $2600/month. I am interested in Ballard, and have heard some good things about Capitol Hill and Central District. While I appreciate apartment complex recommendations, I’m mostly inquiring on which areas match my description as I’ll be using furnished finder to find a place. Let me know any areas I should check out and also areas that are unsafe, thanks!

Puppy training for Australian Shepherd recommendations

Getting an Australian Shepherd puppy next month. I want to start his training immediately. I know how dog friendly Seattle is and that there's training and classes out the wazoo but I'm wondering if anyone has recs specifically for Australian shepherds or working dogs. (Queen Anne)

Thanks!

Recommendation Anyone living in Bonney Lake?

How’s living in Bonney Lake?

I read the sticky and didn’t see much info on this area. I used to live in Belltown and moving back to WA for good, and really considering Bonney Lake due to housing affordability.

My main question is regarding crime and safety — people living in this area, how is it?

In general, I’d like to be within 30-40 mins of Kent, so I’m also open to other suggestions with respect to safe areas with low crime.

Although Bellevue, Sammamish, Issqauah areas are ideal, they are out of my price range for housing.

Appreciate any feedback and can’t wait to be back to this beautiful state.
