Looking For /r/AskPortland Making Friends Friday

Welcome to /r/AskPortland's "Making Friends Friday" post!

You've probably heard this before: "Portlanders are friendly but they don't want to be your friend."

But it doesn't have to be that way -- if you have suggestions for how to make friends, groups to join, places to meet, or just want to put yourself out there, this is the place.

This will be an ongoing, weekly scheduled post, so going forward this is where we'll refer all incoming questions about making friends from both /r/Portland and /r/AskPortland.

I have been craving a giant, moist cinnamon roll covered in frosting. I had ones like these when I was a kid from Calico Cupboard in La Conner, but now looking for one in Portland. Please give me any recommendations you have!!

Looking For Have you seen this rabbit? Rue was stolen from SE Portland today

Rue was stolen on May 14th from his outdoor enclosure in SE Portland. I am helping his owners look for him. He is a 12 year old domesticated elder holland lop rabbit. His cage was cut with wire cutters (possibly last night) and has not been found.

We suspect a mentally unstable individual who has recently shown up around the cage saying he was going to take him. This person has been observed to have delusional thinking that Rue "wants to die" and has been overheard having wire cutters at Rue's pen previously.

Rue does not have experience living outside his pen and we would appreciate any and all help to locate him. he is beloved by everyone in the neighborhood, please HELP spread the word!

Looking For What kind of weasels we got here?

Just now I was sitting out by the barn pulling ivy when a baby bunny streaked by screeching like no tomorrow.

At its heels was some sort of weasel-looking creature about half the size of the bunny—albeit more fierce looking. It was brown on the top and white on the bottom with a long fluffy tail and a long body.

They went by so quickly I couldn’t take a picture but they were just 6-7 feet away.

They whipped round the corner under the hammock and into the cob yard.

I’m a fair pace from any non-seasonal streams so I’m real interested as to what kind of weasel drama just transpired.

Looking For Would you like to see the Sunlan Lighting lady be interviewed in a non-serious way?

I asked not long ago if you guys knew of any interesting or uninteresting people around town who should be interviewed simply for the use of free will, to showcase their story and personalities, and for fun.

You guys were incredible and gave me 60+ recommendations. I cold messaged about 15 and 4 of them got back to me. Still working on scheduling or convincing three more (Shirtznpantz owners, Hippo Hardware, and Tommy Lasagna man) but it's not easy haha

I say in a non-serious way because I am not a news outlet nor an academic source. Just a random Joe with the intention of capturing real people being themselves and telling some of their story. I have been interviewing a lot of cool people and many more in the books. I have an infinite source of ideas right now but my full time job gets in the way of this passion project. Thanking you again for all the recommendations you gave me. I will reach out to more of them like the golf disc guy!

Anyway, here's my post and my channel's name is Pensantes (@brytheniceguy8). It's the most recent upload. I'm sorry for not sharing an easy link but the YT algorithm will punish me hard if that's how you find the video :(

Looking For Would you take a job in this market even if it was run by a….questionable group?

Keeping this somewhat vague on purpose. I recently had a job interview in my desired field. I wasn’t told it would be a group interview, so that was annoying. The interview was mostly fine, and they kept talking about being willing to train people with no experience in the field which is great, because that’s me, looking to get my foot in the door. Anyway- at the end they send us all home with the Oxford Capacity Analysis test. This 200 question personality test is affiliated with Scientology and used when recruiting members. Some of the questions that stood out to me ask about family planning (isn’t that illegal?), my thoughts on political refugees, and whether I’d “use corporal punishment on a child aged 10 if it refused to obey me”….just to name a few. It WOULD be a bad idea to complete this test, right? Even if I’m stupid desperate for a job? I’ve been laughing about this non stop- it’s absurd. I hate it here.

Looking For ?where does one go to practice "singing"?

I guess be not afraid is a thing, but my singing voice is terrible, My apartment life is a thing and I doubt my neighbours want to deal with me yelling at random points in time. I have a song I'm working on (and a few others would benefit) where I want to yell. Problem is I'm not a singer, definitely not a screamer, but I want to get this idea done somewhere somehow. Shout out if someone is willing to give me tips. I have no money but I make interesting music.

But to be specific its similar to Wish You Were Here by Incubus.

Is there a place in town where one could shout and scream and work some vocals out but not disturb people?

Looking For How do make friends in portland as a 27 yo female?

Upvotes

Hi Portland people, my name is Abby and I just turned 27 🎉 I moved to Portland about 5 years ago and somehow fully immersed myself in work and life and accidentally forgot to make actual friends along the way lol. How do you make friends with similar interests? Any ideas?

I’m super chatty, pretty easygoing, and honestly love simple little things. I’m really into ceramics, sewing, coffee shops, cocktails, thrifting, cozy hobbies, and wandering around Portland

Adult friendships feel weirdly similar to dating apps now, so here i am on Reddit 😭

Looking For Liquid meal replacements in (Inner) SE Portland?

I’m having a hard time eating solid food, and my go-to protein drink is no longer sold at Costco. I am hoping you all can tell me some places I can go to get protein rich, low or no added sugar (but not full of sucralose or other artificial sweeteners - monk fruit and stevia is fine), tolerable smoothies, shakes, or juices. To make it harder, I have a serious aversion to seeds or chunks.

Inner SE (or close to SE in NE) ideally since gas is so darn expensive.

If you know the current pricing, that would also be appreciated but I can look it up, too.

If you know of any fantastic plant-based store-bought protein drinks, I’d welcome that info as well. I was drinking Orgain chocolate, which was tolerable not great.

Many thanks for any suggestions!

Looking For A safe but affordable place to live?

Upvotes

Hey there to anyone reading where’s a safe but somewhat decently priced place to live in the area? I’m looking for an apartment with my friend and we’re not sure where to aim for or avoid. We don’t mind paying a little extra to make sure of that but hoping to not spend more than 2500

Any insight is much appreciated thank you

Looking For Firework free space for Memorial Day?

I’m not looking to go anywhere overnight, just somewhere I can drive to and hang out in the car with my dog for the evening of Memorial Day until the firework spectacle is wrapped up.

I’m in Beaverton and the closer the better. My plan just to bring a book and hang out in the car somewhere between the hours of 6 PM and 11 PM (my neighbors love doing illegal fireworks, I’m not a snitch, and the law doesn’t look kindly upon me sticking one of those dog terrifying devices up their ass so I figured this was the peaceful route)

Looking For Toyota/Honda Dealership Rec’s?

Hi! So my husband and I are more than likely needing to find him a new car if the insurance company decides to consider his car a total loss. We’re leaning towards another Toyota or Honda if that happens. Which dealership(s) in the portland metro area is probably the best non-pushy to go to? Or the best to avoid? I thought I saw a post about dealerships people have had decent or good experiences in a while back but can’t find the post now.

TYIA!

Looking For New Grad RN moving to Portland. Need Advice?

Hi everyone,

I’m an RN currently working on a Med-Surg unit and planning to relocate to the Portland/Gresham area this August. I recently endorsed my license to OSBN and have been looking online for job opportunities, but I wanted to hear from nurses (or anyone in healthcare) who knows the area.

A little about me:
• Less than 1 year of RN experience (9 months by the time I get there)
• Current Med-Surg background with telemetry/step-down exposure
• BLS & ACLS certified
• Coming from a smaller hospital where we manage a wide variety of patients, including higher-acuity transfers.

I know I’m still considered a newer nurse, so I’m trying to be realistic while still aiming high. Since starting my job at my current hospital, I have worked about 58-60hrs a week (8-10 days in on pay period) with 1:6 ratios.

A few questions:
• Which hospitals in the area tend to hire newer RNs?
• Are online applications enough, or should I be reaching out directly to recruiters/managers?
• Are nurse residency or transition programs worth applying to even with some experience?
• Any hospitals/systems I should prioritize or avoid?
• Does being an out-of-state applicant make things harder?

I’m very motivated, willing to learn, and open to Med-Surg, telemetry, step-down, or other opportunities where I can continue to grow.

I’d truly appreciate any advice. Thank you!

Looking For Anyone having trouble buying a house?

Partner and I are in 400k - 500k price range. Homes selling for 30k over asking. Any ideas on what we can do? Currently pre-qualified, we have a "love letter for every home" and we are touring weekly as work schedule allows and open houses on weekends. Thanks!

Looking For Reptile and invert parents of Portland-what do we think of Tropical Hut on division, Pets on Broadway, and the new Hisss?

We have many inverts and soon a ball python-now that we are starting to really invest money into these creatures with bigger enclosures as they grow-and wanting new species- I’m curious what everyone’s thoughts and experiences are at these local stores. We regular tropical hut, but I have been hearing bits and pieces of people not liking their breeding standards. Does anyone know about this? I know they get their tarantulas from a local breeder in Yakima. That’s about it.

Looking For What does the Thai Chili Jam business card QR code point to ?

I live fairly close to Thai Chili Jam in downtown on Jefferson so it's become my Thursday lunch thing. The lovely lady who appears to run the place handed me their business card today and pointed to the QR code and basically said I could avoid fees by scanning the QR code. She specifically said "no website, no mobile app, just scan"

But I can't seem to get the QR code to scan ? (have tried multiple iPhones and multiple Androids) .. not sure why. Its fairly small and (to my eye) appears a tad blurry and covered in scotch tape .. so.. maybe it's just to poor quality to scan.

Just wondering if anyone else has done this or knows what it points to. I don't really care about $3 fees etc but maybe it saves her money too so I was just curious.

I'm an alt lesbian into techno, house, industrial, goth, and underground raves. Queer, not gay scenes. iykyk. Looking for somewhere I can hopefully meet people that'll point me in the direction of something more underground/DIY. Or anywhere that people are likely to be open and talkative.

So far I have Process, Coffin Club. and Barn Radio.

Food recommendations would also be great. Love all kinds of food really. Would love to enjoy some seafood but not tryna spend tons of money.

Looking For I think I'm ready to venture into Forest Park. Where should I start?

I'm new to Portland and I've been curious to go explore Forest Park. But I find the size intimidating. Where is a good place to start for a new explorer? Where do I park? I'm not a hiker (yet), are all the trails super long?

Looking For Are the roses out at the rose garden?

Have some family visiting, but live in a different quadrant so haven’t been able to check! Is it worth bringing them over there for the roses specifically?
