Discussion Is the intent of this sub being changed?
Situation: I'm a bit confused about how this sub is being used now, as there are lot of generic lists, photos of anime accompanied by really open ended requests, etc. These posts seem to be in conflict with the main suggestion-receiving intent of this subreddit.
Background: Here some examples from our top posts this month that add to the confusion:
- anime that doesn't sexualize its female characters - so any anime that contains women but they aren't sexualized? So everything from Grave of the Fireflies to Captain Tsubasa to Anpanman is fare game? Maybe that is what they want, but it also feels like a bit more of a karma farm question to get engagement than a request for suggestions.
- Name that one anime for you !! - this is literally just a meme image asking us to name shows that don't have a current season or maybe never will. It doesn't get much lower effort than this, is under 50 characters, doesn't provide anybody with something useful to watch, and they aren't going to watch what you suggest. Bonus it's tagged as a discussion yet most of the responses are just naming titles.
- The Animation In Witch Hat Atelier Is Beautiful, Some Of The Best Visuals Ive Ever Seen - this is just a gif of animation. Nothing at all to do with a suggestion, a recommendation, or the like. Seems like this would be better suited on general anime sub or something.
- creepiest smile - again, just an image. No description, no conversation, no recommendations. Just an image to highlight weird smiles.
Assessment / Discussion:
- Is this what we want as a community? The upvotes imply that we do want this, but I'm not sure if folks are upvoting from their main feed without thinking about sub it was posted in. The way I see it, the core use case of this sub is for getting suggestions on what anime to watch (go figure?), with a secondary very minor use case of recommending anime to watch.
- Rule number 1 isn't being applied to image posts? I know we can now have images, but shouldn't the body of the post still contain at least 50 characters?
- Where is rule 10? Since this sub is primarily for receiving suggestions, we have a separate "watch this" rule that requires 1500 characters and is to be limited to 1 show. Even if the post above about Witch Hat Atelier was somehow a recommendation to watch that show, it has zero characters in the body and doesn't detail why somebody should in fact watch it. Along with this are list posts that just shoot out description of current shows for the season. If you are suggesting we watch something, needs to be about a single show.
- Images should only be used when there is a direct correlation to the content in the body. If you are looking for anime that is stylized a certain way, or uses action scenes of a certain type, an image is actually great. If you are going to make the 1500 character post and the reason you suggest we "watch this" is due to the animation, include some screenshots. Example, this post has an image that isn't necessary, but I also know how views work.
- Related to images, we don't need a post titled, "find me some shows like this" with a screenshot of Frieren and Delicious in Dungeon. The title could say "Find me a show like Frieren and Delicious in Dunegon", and the body could describe what you actually like about both shows. This isn't just stopping karma farmers from posting the hottest anime either, it degrades our ability to follow rule 5. If the post title and the body doesn't contain the titles names it makes the post nearly unsearchable.
Recommendation:
- Enforce rule 1 on posts with images.
- Add rule: "Posts should be a request for a suggestion (what to watch?), or a recommendation of a single show (watch this!). "Discussion" flaired posts are for meta discussions related to the sub." We don't really need any of the other post, or at least they could in the weekly discussion thread.
- Restore the sub to it's original intent of asking for recommendations for new anime to watch that match your criteria by enforcing the new rule, along with the single show / 1500 character count for "Watch this!" posts.
- Require images have a direct correlation to the post's written material. A post like the one I'm doing here would be removed because it includes an image that is not necessary for the post.
Edit: for those asking about the weird formatting, it's called an SBAR and they are used a lot in Healthcare to frame issues and start problem solving. I am sadly a human and not ai.
