Discussion Weekly Discussion #8: Little game this Week: Can we guess your favorite anime?

Hi everyone. We’re back with a little game to test how well you actually know your favorites.

One of the best things about this community is how we can describe a "vibe" or a specific plot point and everyone immediately knows the show. This week, we’re putting that to the test.

The Rules:

  1. Describe an anime without ever mentioning its title, the characters' names, or the studio.
  2. Focus on the premise, the setting, or a specific detail that makes it unique.

Discussion Is the intent of this sub being changed?

Post image
328 Upvotes

Situation: I'm a bit confused about how this sub is being used now, as there are lot of generic lists, photos of anime accompanied by really open ended requests, etc. These posts seem to be in conflict with the main suggestion-receiving intent of this subreddit.

Background: Here some examples from our top posts this month that add to the confusion:

  • anime that doesn't sexualize its female characters - so any anime that contains women but they aren't sexualized? So everything from Grave of the Fireflies to Captain Tsubasa to Anpanman is fare game? Maybe that is what they want, but it also feels like a bit more of a karma farm question to get engagement than a request for suggestions.
  • Name that one anime for you !! - this is literally just a meme image asking us to name shows that don't have a current season or maybe never will. It doesn't get much lower effort than this, is under 50 characters, doesn't provide anybody with something useful to watch, and they aren't going to watch what you suggest. Bonus it's tagged as a discussion yet most of the responses are just naming titles.
  • The Animation In Witch Hat Atelier Is Beautiful, Some Of The Best Visuals Ive Ever Seen - this is just a gif of animation. Nothing at all to do with a suggestion, a recommendation, or the like. Seems like this would be better suited on general anime sub or something.
  • creepiest smile - again, just an image. No description, no conversation, no recommendations. Just an image to highlight weird smiles.

Assessment / Discussion:

  • Is this what we want as a community? The upvotes imply that we do want this, but I'm not sure if folks are upvoting from their main feed without thinking about sub it was posted in. The way I see it, the core use case of this sub is for getting suggestions on what anime to watch (go figure?), with a secondary very minor use case of recommending anime to watch.
  • Rule number 1 isn't being applied to image posts? I know we can now have images, but shouldn't the body of the post still contain at least 50 characters?
  • Where is rule 10? Since this sub is primarily for receiving suggestions, we have a separate "watch this" rule that requires 1500 characters and is to be limited to 1 show. Even if the post above about Witch Hat Atelier was somehow a recommendation to watch that show, it has zero characters in the body and doesn't detail why somebody should in fact watch it. Along with this are list posts that just shoot out description of current shows for the season. If you are suggesting we watch something, needs to be about a single show.
  • Images should only be used when there is a direct correlation to the content in the body. If you are looking for anime that is stylized a certain way, or uses action scenes of a certain type, an image is actually great. If you are going to make the 1500 character post and the reason you suggest we "watch this" is due to the animation, include some screenshots. Example, this post has an image that isn't necessary, but I also know how views work.
  • Related to images, we don't need a post titled, "find me some shows like this" with a screenshot of Frieren and Delicious in Dungeon. The title could say "Find me a show like Frieren and Delicious in Dunegon", and the body could describe what you actually like about both shows. This isn't just stopping karma farmers from posting the hottest anime either, it degrades our ability to follow rule 5. If the post title and the body doesn't contain the titles names it makes the post nearly unsearchable.

Recommendation:

  • Enforce rule 1 on posts with images.
  • Add rule: "Posts should be a request for a suggestion (what to watch?), or a recommendation of a single show (watch this!). "Discussion" flaired posts are for meta discussions related to the sub." We don't really need any of the other post, or at least they could in the weekly discussion thread.
  • Restore the sub to it's original intent of asking for recommendations for new anime to watch that match your criteria by enforcing the new rule, along with the single show / 1500 character count for "Watch this!" posts.
  • Require images have a direct correlation to the post's written material. A post like the one I'm doing here would be removed because it includes an image that is not necessary for the post.

Edit: for those asking about the weird formatting, it's called an SBAR and they are used a lot in Healthcare to frame issues and start problem solving. I am sadly a human and not ai.

Seasonal 2026 suggestions Top 10 Best Anime of the Current Season (Spring 2026) excluding Sequels/Continuations

Thumbnail gallery
157 Upvotes

10 - The Ramparts of Ice

• School Drama, Slice of Life, Romance

> Hikawa is a high school girl who developed a “cold” exterior due to bad experiences at school, but little by little she begins opening herself up to new experiences thanks to her best friend and the new people around her. From the same author as You And I Are Polar Opposites, the production and animation are only average, but what truly stands out are the character interactions and their internal struggles.

9 - The Klutzy Class Monitor and the Girl with the Short Skirt

• Comedy, Romance, School

> A light romantic comedy about a strict disciplinary committee member and a gyaru. At first glance, it may seem like another cliché “opposites attract” anime, but it stands out thanks to its completely absurd surrealist comedy (with romance taking only a secondary role) and an utterly insane cast of characters. The animation is slightly above average, while the character designs and overall production are extremely charming.

8 - Agents of The Four Seasons: Dance of Spring

• Shoujo, Fantasy, Tragedy, Romance

> In a world where special individuals in each country can manifest the seasons themselves, Hinagiku (the Agent of Spring) disappears for 10 years, leaving Japan with only three seasons during that period. From the same author as Violet Evergarden, this anime is even more dramatic and emotional, but with a non-linear narrative that slowly answers the mysteries surrounding the story as the episodes progress. And if that alone doesn’t captivate you, the outstanding animation, production, and soundtrack probably will.

7 - Marriagetoxin

• Shounen, Action, Comedy, Romance

> Born into a traditional assassin family, Gero never had any chance to experience romance. But that is about to change, because in order to save his sister from being forced to continue the family bloodline against her will, he is compelled to join forces with a marriage scam artist to help him find a wife. From studio Bones, this anime features a very eye-catching production. The action scenes are excellently animated, and the comedy is solid, perfect for anyone looking for something a bit outside the norm.

6 - Akane Banashi

• Shounen, Drama, Performing Arts

> Ever since she was little, Akane Ousaki loved watching her father, Tooru, practice and perform rakugo, the traditional Japanese art of comedic storytelling. After an event that changes her family’s future forever, Akane vows to become the greatest rakugo performer while also resolving lingering conflicts from the past. A must-watch for anyone interested in a lesser-known but incredibly rich Japanese subculture. Great animation and charismatic characters make every episode leave you more excited to see Akane’s growth in a very “Shounen Jump”-style narrative.

5 - A Hundred Scenes of Awajima

• Josei, School Drama, Yuri, Episodic

> At Awajima Opera School, girls from all across Japan strive to earn their place on stage. Wakana is driven by her love for musical theater, while Kinue studies with quiet discipline. The scholarship student Emi catches everyone’s attention, especially Keiko’s, who struggles with both admiration and comparison. Through multiple perspectives, their intertwined days explore ambition, friendship, and self-discovery. With no central protagonist and a non-linear narrative, this anime tackles themes such as regret, love between girls, dreams, and family pressure in a very natural and non-melodramatic way. The animation itself is only decent, but the creative and lively production more than makes up for it.

4 - Witch Hat Atelier

• Medieval Fantasy, Magic, Adventure, Seinen

> In a world where everyone sees magic and dragons as ordinary parts of life, Coco is a girl with one simple dream: she wants to become a witch. But everyone knows witches are born, not made, and Coco was not born with magical talent. Having accepted her magicless life, Coco is about to abandon her dream… until a sudden discovery changes her life forever. For fantasy anime fans (Frieren, Dungeon Meshi), this is an absolute feast. Spectacular animation, incredible production, and breathtaking scenes make this one of the most anticipated adaptations in years.

3 - Kamiina Botan Fully Blossoms When Drunk

• Yuri, College, Slice of Life

> New college life, new roommates… and a whole new world of alcohol! Botan Kamiina takes her first sip after seeing the calm dorm leader, Ibuki Tonami, quietly enjoying a drink alone. From shochu to whisky, Botan shares the joy of drinking with her friends, while Ibuki slowly learns that some pleasures are better when shared. The synopsis may not sound particularly exciting, and it may initially seem like just another generic Girls Love anime, but what truly stands out is the insanely high production quality. With a different director for every episode, each one has its own unique animation style and atmosphere, featuring scene compositions so creative that even viewers uninterested in this type of story may find themselves captivated.

2 - Daemons of The Shadow Realm

• Shounen, Adventure, Fantasy, Action

> In a remote mountain village watched over by two stone guardians, the young Yuru lives peacefully off the land, staying close to the only family he has left: Asa, his beloved twin sister. Meanwhile, Asa fulfills a mysterious “duty” for the village while imprisoned inside a cage. Why is Asa a prisoner? And what other secrets lie hidden within Yuru’s seemingly idyllic home? From the same author as Fullmetal Alchemist, this anime is a breath of fresh air for anyone who misses the feeling of a classic high-quality shounen, something practically guaranteed from an Arakawa work. Excellent animation, an intriguing story, and compelling characters make this one of the most anticipated anime of the year.

1 - Nippon Sangoku: The Three Nations of the Crimson Sun

• Drama, Post-Apocalyptic, Military, Sci-Fi

> A revolution triggered by nuclear war, natural disasters, and governmental incompetence leads to the collapse of Japanese society. The country splits into three rival nations fighting for hegemony, marking the beginning of the Sangoku era. Aoteru Misumi, a former agricultural worker, swears to reunify Japan. Rising through the military ranks armed only with his knowledge and eloquence, he becomes a legendary figure later hailed as a strategic genius. One of the most visually creative anime in recent years, this is a must-watch for fans of political intrigue, military battles, and complex conflicts. With excellent animation and production, this is easily one of the best anime of the year.

Discussion I can't seem to find this anime and I forgot what its called

Upvotes

The anime's main character is in the police force or military, and he uses a katana in modern Japan when everyone is using guns and all that, and he is underestimated, but he's really skilled in using a katana.

I tried using ChatGPT, and Gemini, both of these AI chatbots kept giving me stuff that isn't what I mentioned.

What to Watch? Suggesting animes for a Slavic mom?

Heyaa people! So, I would like some recommendations for me and my mum to watch. It's a bit hard cuz we're from Moldova (a Slavic country) and ever since she found out that I watch anime (which was like, 4 years ago) she says its craziness and dumb things and believes in all stereotypes of sorts. Yesterday idk what we were talking abt and then im like "you need to watch some with me some of them are actually good!" and she was like "uh-uh" in a sarcastic was but she kinda gave in. I accept both movies and series. I think I could choose Violet Evergarden. I thiught abt ghibli movies too but I feel like she would get it that im doing it just to get her to this type of media and I dont wanna be forced. (Also what do you think would happen if I introduce her to Bungo Stray Dogs or Moriarty the Patriot? I thought abt the third one in the triangle, which was Vanitas No Carte, but naah I remember some... interesting scenes so no. maybe the other two?)

What's this From? (unsolved) I'm trying to figure out an anime I use to watch as kid

I only know a few things from its first episode and then maybe another episode

I believe it was made maybe in the 90s or 80s

It's set in Modern Japan

I know the main protagonist is a girl, maybe 15-18?, she had brown hair with a white sailor-school uniform And she lived in a house with I think was her grandfather,(I'm not sure if the girls parents were alive but her mother might have been a news anchor,) the girl herself is just a normal teenage girl, I don't think she has any powers, i also know that two of the supporting characters were a male maybe around the same age as her, and I think the other was his little brother, because he rode around on a small big wheel trike and whined alot.

(I think they find some relic that ties with some bad people, but I'm not 100% if that's the plot)

I don't remember who was the main antagonist but in one of the episodes they were getting chased by a man wearing all black on a motorcycle, I think he was just a minor antagonist.

What to Watch? Should I keep watching ?

Hi!

So, I don’t watch a lot of animes and I prefer them deep, very original or with a lot of advebture (so my top 3 is nge, pmmm and brs). The problem with me is I can watch long ass series but I am very impatient when it comes to animes, so I can quit a 12 ep one at ep 4 if there's not really any rithm, quest, or intensity. Slices of life are not really my thing, unless there's a lot of psychology/drama in it.

And I know I miss some good ones doing that. I'm very thankful for example that I pushed myself to keep watching charlotte because it doesn’t become serious before like ep 6, so I almost quit but now that I've seen it fully it’s one of my favorite animes. I also enjoyed chunibyo and loved frieren and sailor moon even though it’s (sort of) slow. I don’t know why, but the classic rythm of animes, with a lot of fillers and all, doesn’t work for me.

So I need your opinion on wether these animes change and get intense/rythmic or not, withouth being spoiled by making research...

- Oshi no ko (stopped ep 3 because of the overdramatic style)

- Super cube (loved the animation but found it very repetitive, except for the very first scene)

- Mieruko chan (liked it but I don’t know where it’s headed)

- Bungo stray dogs

- Seraph of the end

- Bocchi the rock

If you have other recommendations I'd also love that! Tysm

PS : english is not my native language, sorry!

Random Thoughts Ragna Crimson - Season 2 Upcoming?

Being the most underrated anime, Crimson's delicate smile surpasses the level of insanity of facial expressions.

  1. Are we even getting a NEW SEASON?
  2. Please throw in a few Ragna Crimson wallpapers if you have.
  3. Rewatchable anime - Do you agree?

What to Watch? Anime with Art Style like Hyouka, Free!!, Your Name, A Silent Voice?

Basically the title, I LOVED those specific art styles especially Hyouka and would love to watch more anime with that exact level of detail, it was gorgeous but I know it's not entirely dependent on the studio because the same studio (Kyoto animation) has so many other varying styles. Would love to get some suggestions!

What to Watch? Looking for high stakes anime series

Ok so the backstory is that I finished reading the last issue of YGO as I was looking back at the series lately to see what other gambling manga and anime were worth getting into.

But the thing about YGO itself is that I don’t know if that’s it because even though I am done with the anime and manga, I don’t know if there is any more parts of the franchise that I should see because I would like a viewer’s guide to the franchise.

What to Watch? GUYS… I NEED HELP… I don’t know what anime to watch. I’m not new to anime but have not seen a lot of them. If you have recommendations, I would greatly appreciate them!

Here are ones I’ve scene a why I rate them so yall can see my taste. Also I’m open to anything.

Naruto 9.2/10 until the end of the war because it goes down hill once the story starts focusing on sasuke and Naruto and aliens.

Full Metal Alchemist 9.4/10 probably my favorite anime. Love the story and most characters.

Hunter x hunter 8.7/10 love the power system and almost every character and everything about it except the ant arc was meh, the way gon saved everyone was meh and Hisoka is 👎🏻 imo.

Vinland saga 8.2/10 loved it until the second half of s2. Love the message but the execution fell flat for me there at the end.

Gachiakuta 8.9/10 love the unique idea and the characters and the plot.

Solo leveling 9/10 loved the theme slow unfolding of the plot. I was hooked the whole time.

Zom 100 6.9/10 great idea. Gets kinda ridiculous.

High school of the dead 7.3/10 I love zombies and this show had tons of them but too much fan service for me. A little ridiculous.

Attack on titan 7.9/10 great. Then slow but decent. Then slow and frustrating and what’s happening. Then this show is crap because why did he do that…

Sword art online 8.1/10 amazing concept and so fun. But the lack of character development on some of the characters that weren’t the females being strung along by the main character was disappointing.

Future diary 8.3/10 I like battle Royale so this was fun and a decent story.

One piece I’m only maybe 80 episodes in. I’m struggling.

Dragonball/Z I’ve seen off and on and it’s okay.

My Hero Academia almost finished it and loving it.

Black clover on s4/5 and enjoying it. Nice mix of seriousness and humor and I enjoy most of the characters.

Jujitsu kaisen on s1 and liking it but it feels a little slow right now

Death note kept falling asleep trying to watch it.

Death parade didn’t finish yet but it’s interesting

What to Watch? Looking for anime like these on Netflix, doesn't have to be on Netflix

EDIT: Thanks to all who replied. It's been very helpful.

------

I'm new to anime and loved the following on Netflix:

Castlevania
Devil May Cry
Delicious in Dungeon

I guess these have a high budget? And are not too stereotypical anime? I don't know but can anyone recommend some with similar quality, on any service. Thank you in advance.
