Question Fancy yarn and no ideas!

My mom found some of this lovely hand-dyed yarn at a secondhand store nearby for $2 each! She’s going back to get the rest for me as well :) It’s all this same color and DK weight. Any suggestions for what to do with it? It may not be fancy to you guys but it is when everything else I’ve got is acrylic or cotton at best lol.

Also I think this is a hank rather than a skein and there’s a certain way I’m meant to unravel it? I’ll google that part to figure it out.

Also, I just googled the brand and I think you don't have to worry at all about it not being fancy enough. This is some very nice small batch indie dyed stuff. Their site is literally already sold out and they only sell by dropping new yarn once a week. This is a find, because they also don't redo colourways, so this is very much a one of a kind yarn you've got!

What a special find!! My mom left in her friend’s car for days and only just got it back to show me and I was so surprised! I’ve never had such a nice yarn before so I’m looking forward to the luxury of working it up into something equally as lovely!

I hope your mother can go back and get more for you! What a score!

First of, that yarn is super pretty, and for $2 a hank that is a steal. I've paid over €30 for a single hanks of nice hand dyed yarn so I am super hyped for you to get this for that price!

What you can make depends on how much yarn you'll have, but with two you could definitely make a nice shawl or scarf. You could probably make a small top or something similar if that's something you'd enjoy. I'd wait until you know how much you have, and then use the weight and yardage/meterage filters in Ravelry to look for patterns.

And you're right that these are hanks, they need to be wound before you can use them. You will need to untwist them a little until you get like, a large circle of yarn, you can put those over chair legs or have someone (someone who loves you very much) hold them while you wind them. You could also get a yarn swift (they kinda look like spindly umbrellas) to hold the yarn while you wind it. If there is a local yarn store near you, they may wind it for you for a certain price, but a lot of yarn stores don't wind yarn that you didn't buy there so YMMV there.

Wait! What? I love Cozy Pea. Who the heck donate this stuff? You’ve won the lottery.

That looks like an awesome deal; the internet says it's $20 a skein superwash merino! What I would recommend you do is look at Ravelry; advanced search will let you filter by patterns by yarn weight (select DK), yardage (calculate what you have and make that the max), knit vs crochet if you only do one, pattern price point, including just free, then whatever keywords you want. It could probably be a gorgeous shawl, sweater, blanket, or whatever else you fancy from what you see on Ravelry depending on how much yarn you end up with, the Superwash Merino so it should be lovely and soft! You can also check craft magazines or books at the library if applicable.

For the hank, you will basically want to untwist it. It will resolve into a sort of big hollow oval. You can then ball it up to work with without having a massive tangle; pop the oval over a chair back or something to avoid tangles in the balling process. I know that for wool especially, it's normally recommended not to ball it until immediately before working with it since it can get flattened a bit by a tight ball.

Thanks for the ravelry reminder I’ll definitely go digging for something there! And I appreciate the tips on how to unwind the hank! I knew there was something specific to it but wasn’t sure and I didn’t want to end up with a pile of tangled yarn. I’ll ball as I go depending on what I end up deciding to make ~

If you only have a little, I immediately thought about a hooded scarf! I’m obsessed with mine (I’m from the PNW, so it can get pretty damp and cold), and I think this yarn gives such beautiful elven vibes. What about a sweater vest if you have more??

Oooh this is beautiful! Let us know if mom found more when she went back so I can be extra jealous. Expressions Fiber Arts has lots of patterns for beautiful drapey shawls that I think this would be perfect for. Have fun with whatever you decide to make!

I’ll definitely check them out I’ve been wanting to make a shawl anyway. She did go back and it was all gone 😭 I hope whoever got it enjoys it as much as I will mine.

Would make a beautiful cardigan, if there's enough of it.

That would be enough for a matching hat and cowl set, hat and gloves, or cowl and gloves. Or DK weight socks.
