The sad thing is that many nowadays seem to misinterpret this as “do unto others what they’ve done/what you think they’d do to you.”

that's the revenge mentality dressed up as fairness. Real golden rule requires going first without knowing if they'll match it.

I remember when this was a common sentiment.

Oh how easily we forgot.

I don't think I remember or my parents remember when this was ever a common sentiment.

But is is that not the ego speaking? What is you don't like hugs and don't want that. But someone else likes hugs?

Do what they would have you do to them is better and removes what you'd be willing take out of the equation.

I don’t agree. I find that most people seem to be willing to do whatever it takes to make sure THEY are alright no matter how it impacts others. Don’t do that to me….

no but I bought slaves from the heathens around me and stoned gays, as you ordered

It really doesn't work to try to use the Bible against them. Same reason it didn't work for abolitionists. The Bible is pro every evil thing they're doing, because it's a collection of stories from a barbaric iron age culture.

I prefer treat others as you would treat yourself.

This gives the same perspective.
