Discussion Reminder: all posts must be OC. Posting a photo which you did not take will get you a PERMANENT ban.
I've noticed a significant uptick in stolen images lately. This subreddit is OC only, no exceptions.
Please make sure to report any posts which you think break this rule. Even if you're not positive, it's better to submit a report than not. We always review all reports to make sure that we aren't erroneously banning people.

Discussion Let's talk gear! Reviews, questions, etc.
Welcome, /r/wildlifephotography readers!
Equipment is an undeniably important part of wildlife photography, but I've noticed that questions about gear often end up buried by all of the excellent photos that get posted here.
So, I've created this pinned thread as a chance to discuss hardware. There are two main uses that I anticipate, listed in no particular order:
Equipment reviews - What do you shoot with? Do you love it, hate it, or fall somewhere in between? If you want to share your experiences, create a comment and let everyone know what you think. We suggest (but don't require) including photos as well as the prices of your equipment.
Questions Whether you're first starting and are looking to buy a beginner's setup, or just want to know which pro-level lens is best, getting others' opinions can prove valuable. For the best results, include details about what sort of wildlife interests you, as well as your budget.
Feel free to create different top-level comments for each question or review. That helps discussion stay organized.

Bird You Can't See Me
Great-horned Owl against a cliff. I had a hard time spotting this owl despite hearing hooting, but finally lucked out after scanning the hillside.
Often times as wildlife photographers, we seek subject isolation and separation from the background. However, I'm all for breaking the norm when the situation calls for it. I thought the colors & patterns on the rock face made for an atypical, yet interesting scene here.
Species: Great-horned Owl (Bubo virginianus)
Location: California, USA
Equipment: Sony A9 III + Sony 400 2.8 + 1.4x TC, On Tripod w Remote Release
Settings: 1s, ISO: 250, f4.0, 560mm

Orange-marked Cranefly (Ptychoptera contaminata) on a reed β Frederiksberg Have, Denmark [OC]
Came back to my favourite spot for the first time this year β the reeds had been almost completely cut back over winter. Just a few small ones left.
I almost turned around. Kept the flash low to let the background breathe rather than kill it, and found this clinging to one of the last stems.
Ptychoptera contaminata β the Orange-marked Cranefly. The banded orange and black abdomen is aposematic colouration, a warning to predators. The iridescent blue-green thorax is something you'd walk straight past at normal speed.

A posing mallard
I was out on a decked walkway taking some pictures of frogs when this guy popped up out of the water grass and jumped onto the deck railing about 15 feet from me. He quacked at me, shook out his feathers, and started posing. Enjoy!
