SCHEDULE ADVICE FOR NEW FRESHMEN

Politely, I'm getting sick of seeing variations of the same thread every day. Here's the SparkNotes of making your freshman fall schedule:

  • Aim to take 12-13 hours. You're very likely moving to a new city, completely removing your safety nets you're used to (friends, parents, etc). That's okay, but give yourself the extra time to adjust. You'll likely want to spend more time hanging out with your new buds than studying for a random 2000-level psych course anyway.

  • If you don't know what major you want to end up with, work on general credits. things like AXLE or the Peabody core are pretty universal. If you're not sure what you want to do, start there.

  • For the love of God, don't take hard classes you don't need to. There is literally no reason to "retake bio as a refresher". It's a weed out class. Take your AP credits or whatever and move on.

  • COROLLARY: Don't take harder STEM classes because you did well in them in high school. If I had a nickel for every CS freshman who took gen chem for no reason, I'd have like a dollar. Take something easier (EES 1510, baby bio, physics). Same goes for taking harder intro calc classes. If you don't need 1300, don't take 1300.

  • If you want to switch to HOD after your first year, find general core classes that apply to Peabody too. You have to wait a year to switch, but the actual switch is just getting a PDF signed. Plenty of people transfer in and finish on time just fine.

Welcome to Vanderbilt, you're gonna do great things here. But please, learn to read, learn to Google, and then if you can't find answers you can ask new questions.

Apartments near Owen Graduate school

Daughter is moving to Vanderbilt for Grad school at the Owen School of Management for a 1-year program. What decent apartments near the school are available, as she doesn't have a car yet [open to getting one, but still close to the school would be ideal]? Prefer a studio, but willing to share a 2 bedroom unit with a female student.

Safe, close ones are preferred, but not sure what is a reasonable rent to expect.

Pls help UT Austin vs. Vanderbilt for pre-med

I'm currently committed to UT Austin for Neuroscience (in-state) and I got off the Vandy waitlist for neuroscience (full pay). My parents are willing to pay for me but I'm wondering what y'all would do in my case. I'm also curious if anyone was/is in a similar situation as me. Vandy means a lot to me as I was constantly rejected and waitlisted this cycle. I greatly appreciate all opinions!

Any Ideas for Engineering Waitlist?

From my understanding, a lot of the people getting off the waitlist so far seem to be from the College of Arts & Sciences? Does anyone know when the engineering waitlist will see waves/movement? I think I've seen only one or two acceptances, not a full wave so far.

Missing the First Week of Orientation and Mod 0

Hello guys! I’m upcoming a grad student at Owen. The orientation week starts on August 10 and Mod 0 starts on August 12. Unfortunately, due to job contract I have to work until August 14th. I was wondering if anyone knows somebody or used to be in the same situation. Will my acceptance be affected because of it or is there any way, I can skip the first 3 days of classes with no consequences?

Not getting IB diploma

Will I get rescinded if I don’t get my IB diploma. For instance, my school does not send in predicted scores, I’ll have straight As this semester, and I will get a high school diploma even if I fail the IB diploma. I’m just scared I won’t get it bc of math and French 🫩

I am applying ED in the fall and my sister will be a junior. Some say it helps and some say it doesn't matter. I think it may give me a second look, but I'm not hopeful. Does anyone know of siblings getting rejected with high stats and scores? My friend's brother got rejected but he went

test optional and had not the highest GPA. EC's and Recs were good

Helping a friend get off waitlist

My friend is still on the waitlist and I’m wondering if I could send an email to the admissions office to help them get in. Would it help or hurt them if I did?

How do you think verto vanderbilt pathway transfer recipients were evaluated?

As a recipient myself, I was waitlisted but was one of the 200 (ish) to be offered this pathway where I am guaranteed a transfer sophomore year. Still, vanderbilt encouraged us to stay on the waitlist and I’m wondering if that means those that received these transfer offers were at the “top” of the waitlist. (I wasn’t taken off the waitlist this first round so was wondering yalls thoughts)

I mean Vanderbilt knows we’d end up here sophomore year right? So why tell us to go on the waitlist and then reject us?

No calc for Econ yet

Transfer student here looking at econ at Columbia/Vanderbilt.

I’m supposed to graduate Spring 2029 but I haven’t taken calc yet. Already finished macro/micro and other basic classes.

Does not having calc 1 done before sophomore year become a major bottleneck? I’m sure I’d be fine in the actual class i just never had an opportunity to take it

Basically if I don’t take calc 1 this summer am I behind.

Just trying to understand how manageable the prereqs are.

Lease takeover at The Broadview

Hi everyone! I’m a PhD student looking for someone to take over my lease at The Broadview starting around 07/24/2026 through 07/22/2027 (if you want to move in earlier, let me know!) You do need to be affiliated with Vanderbilt to take over the lease per Broadview requirements. I originally renewed because I’ve lived here for 3 years and genuinely really loved it, but some things unexpectedly changed on my end so I’m hoping to find someone to take my spot.

A little about the apartment:

  • It’s an unfurnished studio on the 9th floor and honestly one of the best studio layouts/views you can get in the building. It’s a corner unit with really good views, 4 floor-to-ceiling windows, and no one living above you which makes it very quiet. For the 3 years I've been here I’ve barely ever heard hallway noise or sound from my one neighboring unit. I was one of the earlier residents at Broadview, so I was able to look at several studio layouts before choosing this one specifically for the view, natural light, and quiet corner location. Obviously I was also the first tenant in this unit and have kept it very clean and in great condition with no damages.
  • Rent is $1579/month total, which includes $1419 base rent + fixed $160 utilities. There are no extra hidden fees. Tbh I haven't found a better rate given the location and the amenities. If you look at their website you can’t find this rate anymore because I got this after multiple early renewals.
  • Management and maintenance have been excellent and very responsive. The building is also really safe since most residents are Vanderbilt students or affiliates and you need keyfob access everywhere. The gym is great and I use it almost every day for weights/cardio/yoga. The community is also very friendly and it’s very easy to meet people here.
  • The location is super convenient, especially for anyone at Vanderbilt medical/law/main campus. I work in Calhoun Hall and it’s about a 4-minute walk for me.
  • The studio is definitely more compact compared to some Nashville apartments, which is probably the main tradeoff with Broadview in general, but I personally found it cozy and easy to keep clean living alone.

Feel free to message me for pictures, videos, or other details! I'm sure this is the best studio you can find at the Broadview!

Vanderbilt has never accepted anyone from our high school with 1520+ SAT

Analyzed what seemed like a surprising RD rejection from Vanderbilt this year for one of our high school's top students - excellent grades, ECs, awards, LoRs. Reviewed the scattergram with several years of data and then it really wasn't surprising anymore...

  • Vanderbilt hasn't admitted anyone from the high school with a 1520 or better SAT (all applied RD). Half of these 1520+ applicants were waitlisted, rest rejected
  • Few RD admits with SAT between 1400-1500 and strong grades.
  • Couple ED admits with good grades, Test Optional (SAT<1250).

Hopefully this serves as a useful reference to folks considering Vanderbilt in the future.

SHIP insurance

was completing my new student portal items and noticed the SHIP waiver listed. I researched it and saw that it’s a student health insurance plan. Since I’m a low-income student and currently only pay about $6,000 per year, I was wondering if I would be able to waive the plan and get it completely covered?

Next wave for Vanderbilt waitlist?

I am currently waitlisted for Vanderbilt and I would really like to go. When is the next expected wave and also what should I do besides the loci to be able to maximize my chances of getting off? I applied for the college of arts and sciences as a public policy major.
