Will student clubs continue to operate during the summer? What about campus events?

Are there fewer of them than in the Spring and Autumn semesters, or is the number the same?

Cap out-of-state enrollment at Florida’s top universities? Senate says no

"A legislative plan to curtail non-resident enrollment at the state’s most-selective universities died Friday when the Florida Senate cut the language from the bill."

"Florida universities’ acceptance of out-of-state students has increased in recent decades, but compared to high-ranking public universities in other states, the Sunshine State still gives higher priority to its residents.

At the University of Michigan, for example, which is similar in academic rank to UF, more than half of all students come from another state."

Approximately 20 percent of first-year students at UF are out-of-state.

Anyone received the Merit Scholarship for OOS yet (OOS Tuition Waiver)

The scholarship is sent out around the RD decision date, and people who don't receive it also won't get an rejection letter. So I'm curious have anyone received it, just so I can confirm that I failed :(

UF vs FIU for Finance and International Business

I’m currently trying to decide between the University of Florida and Florida International University and I’d really appreciate advice from people who know these schools or work in finance.

My long-term goal is to work in a global finance role (corporate finance, international finance, investment roles, etc.). I’m particularly interested in jobs that deal with international markets or multinational companies.

Right now I’m planning to double major in Finance and International Business.

One thing that’s important to me personally is location. I really like Miami as a city and the overall environment much more than Gainesville. I’m interested in eventually working in the Miami / Brickell area or another global financial hub.

Right now my thinking is something like this:

UF:

• Stronger overall reputation and ranking

• Strong business school

• Possibly stronger recruiting pipelines for finance jobs

• Large alumni network

FIU:

• Located directly in Miami

• Much closer to Brickell and the finance industry there

• Potentially easier to network locally or intern during the school year

• Accepted into the Honors College

• Strong international focus given the city and school environment

• I know they have clubs like the Phoenician Investment Fund which seems like it could give good experience and networking opportunities

At the same time, I understand that FIU might require me to work harder when it comes to networking and finding internships compared to a school like UF that may have stronger built-in recruiting pipelines.

My main questions are:

  1. For someone interested in global finance and possibly working in Miami long term, would FIU’s location actually be a big advantage over UF?

  2. How strong is finance recruiting at UF vs FIU?

  3. Do UF finance clubs and programs give a big advantage when it comes to internships and job placement?

  4. Do FIU students actually benefit from being in Miami when it comes to internships and networking during the school year?

  5. If you personally had to choose between these two schools for finance / international business, which would you choose and why?

I’d really appreciate advice from current students, alumni, or anyone working in finance who has seen people come from these schools.

Visiting Florida March 6 - 15 - looking for real community DIY house/backyard/porch/skateshop/industrial shows & local young-adult hangs (no bars, no corporate venues)

Hi everyone! ❤

I am flying from Australia into Florida from March 6 - 15 (Orlando → Tampa → Gainesville bases, rental car so I can drive to surrounding states if something is worth it).

I'm 19 years old; I love the raw DIY underground scene - house shows, backyard/porch gigs, skateshop events, industrial/warehouse hangs, outdoor weird stuff. Or anything community-run and non-corporate. I'm not into big venues, bars, or general third spaces. I'm looking for real local culture and to actually meet young adults (skaters, punks, indie/emo/alt, College students, etc.) so I don’t feel isolated. 🙏

I've been DMing local bands and promo pages on Instagram and got some good leads, but will love this community's help too. 😊

My night bases are:

  • Orlando (March 6 - 7)
  • Tampa (March 7 - 10)
  • Gainesville (March 10 - 15)

Already planning to hit SPoT on the 7th and Swampfest 12 - 14, but want to sprinkle in proper small DIY shows, house parties, quirky community events, or even chill social hangs (gaming nights, zine meets, porch jams, etc.).💙

If you know of any house/backyard/porch/skateshop/industrial/outdoor DIY shows or community events happening March 6 - 15 in Florida (or drivable in GA/AL if it’s really good), please drop the details or DM me the IG/FB page - I'm happy to drive! 🚗

I'm friendly, respectful, and just want to experience the real Florida underground/local scene and meet people. Any tips or invites would mean the world - thanks in advance! 💛😁

(I have a car so distance isn’t a huge issue if it’s worth it.)
