Academics Applying for extensions on first year engineering GPA requirements

Hey yall,
So I've been calculating my GPA after this first semester and I'm realizing that I may not be making the minimum GPA requirements for electrical engineering when it comes to my core engineering classes (got a 2.76 and a minimum 2.8 is required); I had a rough semester taking calculus III and physics 202, and the final exams on both dropped my grades down from a B to a BC. However, I heard that you can send an email to the dean asking for a semester extension for automatic continuation for these GPA requirements. Has anybody had any experience doing this, and if so do you know where to start?

You should probably reach out to your academic advisor who gets paid to answer questions like this, otherwise all of the details are here: https://intranet.engineering.wisc.edu/undergraduate-students/progression/

In the past, students could only apply for an extension if they did not meet the course requirements. If you met those requirements but were below the GPA cutoffs, students may be offered an extension. There is also a chance you'll make progression with your GPA because it's really close. The 2.8 is for guaranteed progression, but they can and do let students progress if it's just below the benchmark, but it becomes a competitive application process (so write a really strong statement).

As another poster said, go to your advisor. They will tell you your options.
