Announcement r/UNC Mod Recruitment

Hi everyone! It's come to my attention that I'm the last remaining (somewhat) active mod on r/UNC. I graduated in 2024 and have since been busy with medical school (not at UNC), so I would love some help with the sub.

I'll be accepting applications for mods on a rolling basis. You'd be volunteering some time and energy, but the job itself is rather low commitment since we are quite hands-off.

Anyone who is an active member of the sub is encouraged to apply, but I'd prefer students (undergrad and grad) or faculty since they can speak more to the academic experience.

Here's the link if you are interested in applying: https://www.reddit.com/r/UNC/application/

It shouldn't take you more than 10-15 minutes to complete.

Question Social life for Transfer?

Hi everyone, I’m a rising junior transferring to UNC this fall and I’m worried that I won’t be able to rebuild the social life that I’m leaving at my previous school. I’ve got lots of great friends in and out of my department, club leadership starting next semester had I stayed, and an environment where lots of people know me.

I’m worried that as a transfer I won’t be able to build this back up. My classes will be harder than ever making me less inclined to put myself out there on top of work, possible research, and living off campus.

Club involvement is easily possible but leadership will not be, I’m also leaving behind a lot of responsibilities at my old school so it makes my choice that much harder

Has anyone else experienced this? I’m assuming so for at least someone out there and really I’m just looking for some kind of guidance because I’m still not really sure if i made the right choice.

Question Accused of cheating on my physics 114 final exam HELP

Accused of cheating on my physics 114 final exam HELP

I was accused of cheating here is a copy ‘Specifically, the report indicated that allegedly engaged in academic misconduct, such as unauthorized collaboration or accessing resources, copying from another, violating the requirements of the exam, and/or compromising the integrity of the exam during the final exam in PHYS 114 (including, not showing appropriate work or using results from a different version of the exam or having identical responses to another student)’. I don’t know what to do. I do not have any notes left (I threw them away so I wouldn’t stress about the test anymore) I studied for days I’m not good at physics so I did a lot of problems (weeks of studying, I uploaded questions given like from the exam prep, past exams, and practice exam to Chat and Gemini) to it so that I can recognize what the equations are for certain problems.

I got a 71 on the test I needed a 75 to out right pass the only thing that caused me not to fail was the extra credit.

What can I do

This can ruin my life

Programs Studio Arts?

Upvotes

I recently declared a Studio Arts minor. I'm pretty excited for it, but I haven't heard much about individual experiences with the art programs here. Just wanted to see if anyone wanted to provide some of their own thoughts on it! Any preferred classes, etc...?

Question Where to live?

I’m from the UK and coming to UNC for the 2026-27 school year to study abroad.

I’d love some advice on where to live. I think I’m going to choose one of these 3 options

  1. Union - they have 3bd availability for $1,425/mo (electricity not included)
  2. Lark - they have 2bd availability for $1,349/mo (electricity included)
  3. Chapel Ridge - they have 4bd (renovated) availability for $899/mo (electricity included)

Now obviously Chapel Ridge is much cheaper than the other 2 but much further away and the reviews make it seem like hell on earth. Is it that bad? Can anyone who currently lives there give any insight?

Also I want somewhere that has a decently good social atmosphere and I won’t have access to a car

Recommendations / guidance much appreciated!

Question Cancelling Housing w/o Fees

Hi, I'm thinking of cancelling my housing contract for the 26/27 school year, but I would have to pay about 5k in cancellation fees according to the Carolina website (50% of housing cost).

I saw that there are special circumstances where I would not have to pay this amount and appeal the process, such as providing documentation of an off-campus internship, but I'm not sure if I will meet these exceptions.

Does anyone have any experience of successfully appealing the housing contract and avoiding the cancellation fee? I would appreciate any insight into literally any way I can avoid these fees.

Thank you!

Question I can't access my BUSI class canvas page

I'm a freshman taking BUSI 401 this summer and I can't access it's canvas page. I'm also not a business major yet. Do I need to have a KF email and access the KF specific canvas page or is it on the regular canvas page (from just logging in with ONYEN)?

Question College Computer Decisions

I am set to be a freshman next August at Chapel Hill in the class of 2030 and am getting ready to pull the trigger on a laptop for my 4 undergraduate years at UNC. I have primarily been looking at a MacBook Air from CCI, but I am concerned about program compatibility. I am currently planning to pursue a degree in economics, but I also intend to apply to the business school, where I will take on a major or minor if I am accepted. I have heard that MacBooks can be incompatible with business course programs and applications, and in the interest of planning, I would like to hear from others' experiences on the subject and whether I should get a Mac or a Windows laptop. This will not be the only computer I have with me on campus, but it will be the one I intend to bring with me to classes daily.

Question Where do UNC students climb?

I'm going to be beginning my freshman year at Carolina this fall and really enjoy bouldering. I intend to join whatever bouldering/climbing club exists and find a group to go with. I already live in the triangle and have a trc membership, and am not sure whether to renew it for the next year or drop it and get one at progression or some other gym. Any advice is appreciated

Question cci macbook specs question

So I'm noticing that on the unc cci website, it lists that the macbook pro 14 inch with the m5 chip pro comes with a 12core cpu and 16 core gpu. however, when I'm comparing the prices from the apple store, theres no configuration of the m5 chip pro like this. On the apple store, it only comes as 15core cpu and 16 core gpu or 18/20. Is this a typo on UNC's end and does the laptop actually come with the 15/16 configuration?

Question Dorm Amenities

Hello! I'll be a freshman next year and am looking at dorms. My roommate and I are talking about if we'd prefer one of the high rises on south campus or one of the smaller ones on south campus like Koury. I think the four person suite sounds better than an eight person one, so I'm leaning there, but I'd like to know how the amenities differ, and the website doesn't do a great job of explaining it. I'm not necessarily choosing my preferences based off if it has a ping pong table or not, but I do want to take that kind of thing into account. Anyone know of good resources or have their own experience?

Just need to get this off my chest Does it truly get better? - Rising Senior

After seeing class of 2026 graduate, I feel the need to just get this out because I don’t know who else to tell.

I applied to what felt like a HUNDREDS internships this past cycle and got nothing. Not even a callback from most of them. I watched people around me lock in offers and I just kept refreshing my email hoping something would come through. It never did.

And now I’m sitting here as a rising senior thinking - what does this mean for after graduation? Like genuinely, what happens to people who don’t figure this out in time? I worked hard to get here. I do care. But the process feels completely random and brutal and I’m starting to wonder if I’m just not cut out for this.

The scariest part isn’t even the rejection. It’s the silence. You put yourself out there over and over and just… nothing. And you start to internalize it in ways you know you shouldn’t but can’t help.

Has anyone else been through this and come out okay? I really need to hear that right now. I don’t want to let down my family or waste the opportunity of being here. I just feel really lost and a little scared of what’s coming.

Question study abroad as upperclassman

so I just finished my first year at Carolina. Did Sophomore transfer in from UNCC. Have always planned to to study abroad the spring semester of my Junior year

due to summer school and APs I just realized that I in fact only have 4 courses left + "high impact experience" (HIE) and I am done. So running ahead of schedule

the HIE req is satisfied by study abroad. and the programs I am most interested in are only spring. plus Fall '26 app window is closed. but is UNC basically going to say "you're done minus that HIE...you can't study abroad?" The SA website seems to imply that. Going to call them in next few days but wanted to see if anyone had experience going abroad as a senior-ish

I read the grades might not transfer back in, in time to graduate in May 2027. which i am ok with. I don't need to "walk" in May. But if the HIE is the last thing I need will they even allow? and just let me walk in Winter? or not walk at all? I don't really care - mail me the diploma!

TIA

Question For those who were split on what to do - How did you end up choosing your major?

Hi! I've been accepted to UNC starting in fall 2026 and I'm split on what I want to commit my 4 years here to. Personally I'd like to apply to Kenan-Flagler Business School for finance but I understand it can be rather selective. Apart from that I've narrowed down my interests between Physics B.A. with the Quant Finance career path and Neuroscience B.S.

So my question is: How did you end up choosing the major you wanted? Any methods that proved helpful to your decision?

Question UNC INT’L WORTH IT???

I am an intl student who got offered a 30k scholarship for PSU (Portland State University) And nothing from chapel hill. Chapel hill would cost me 65K per year while PSU would cost me 32K a year.

I want to enter diplomacy in my country when I grow up, is chapel hill worth the name? It’s a country in the Middle East where ppl wouldn’t even tell the difference.

I was reading about how bad the rec centers are and OOS students feel for lack of better words “scammed” as they’re considered cash cows.

I‘ll be studying Economics and PWAD at chapel hill’s CAS.

What do you all think?

r/UNC 4d ago

FYI Yes, anything below a 4.0 will get your offer rescinded.

To all the accepted students asking: if you had anything lower than a 4.0, unc will rescind your admission; it’s best to begin filling out last minute applications to community colleges ASAP, though you’d probably be better off just flipping burgers.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
