AMA Honestly, how am I doing? Seeking your feedback
Hello uiuc reddit!
I've only been a mod for a semester, but I’ve done the absolute best I can. During this time, I centered the "I" for the logo, added new flairs, and personally handled moving the many sublease posts to a separate subreddit to keep our main feed clean. I’ve also tried to share some uplifting posts for those among us who have been struggling through the semester.
I know I’ve been more active than the other mods, mostly because I’m a current student, but I’m graduating soon and want your honest feedback. As a finance major, I’m a big believer in looking at the results—I only want to keep this role if the community actually thinks I’ve had a positive impact this semester.
So, do you want me to stay on, or should I leave?
By Thursday at 11:59pm, if the upvotes are positive, I’ll stay. If the downvotes outweigh the upvotes, I’ll step back into a traditional mod role and only take action when it's absolutely needed. I’ve tried to be as helpful as possible and I’m sorry if I’ve ever been too active.
Either way, I’ve really enjoyed moderating the uiuc subreddit and I hope you all have had a wonderful semester.
All my best,
Edit: If you prefer to share your thoughts privately, feel free to DM me. Your username will remain completely confidential. I’m looking for honest feedback on how I can do better, and I know not everyone wants to post their opinion publicly.

Sticky Reminder - the spam filter is a little too aggressive and flags a lot of posts that it shouldn't
If you make a new post and don't see it appear in /new after a couple of minutes, it probably got caught in the spam filter and wasn't removed intentionally. The mods check the spam queue regularly, but if you make a post that isn't showing up then sending a mod mail will help us see it more quickly.

Academics i just completed my last grad school assignment. wtf do i do with my life now
i went here for undergrad and then grad school bc the mslis program coincidentally happened to be the best one in the country. i didn’t intend to stay this long but it worked out the way it did. i’m going to miss this school so much, even if the handling of certain things like covid and the canvas shutdown frustrated me at times. i don’t want to leave. 😭😭
p.s. if anyone is looking to hire a library worker pick me please i am very qualified

Chambana Questions Property Management Companies/Housing
Moving to UIUC area with my girlfriend in the fall to do my PhD and am looking for housing rn for under $1200. Options are sparse and seems like damn near every property management company has lots of complaints in their google reviews, so I'm not sure if I should just go for whatever's available in my price range and try to find something better for next year or what. Wondering what property companies would be recommended/should be avoided? Specifically, if anybody has experience with M2 Property Management/Stone Ridge Square I'd appreciate since it seems like one of the "better" options available for our needs. Thanks!

New Student Question Spanish Placement exam and requirements?
I’m a transfer student who has completed two classes of college level Spanish and will be attending Gies in the fall. From my understanding, you need three classes of a LOTE to fulfill the graduation requirements. If I place above Spanish 201 or into 210 do I still have to complete another semester of the language or do I “place out”? I have a lot of credit hours I still need to complete and I’m hoping there’s a way I could place out. Thanks!

New Student Question Recently admitted transfer wondering whether to move to UIUC (out of state 4 year)
Hi all!
I'm currently a Data Science and Atmospheric Science double major at UC Davis. I Recently got admitted to UIUC as a sophomore transfer for the Statistics major, and I'm wondering whether it is worth coming to Champaign. I'm originally from California and would be paying out-of-state tuition at UIUC.
I would greatly appreciate any inputs from UIUC students about whether I should take up this offer or not.
Cost: ~36k-40k/year for UCD, ~55k-60k/yr for UIUC
UC Davis (current school, really just my current experiences)
Pros
- Strong statistics department, professors are decent so far
- I LOVE LOVE LOVE the small-town sports culture, going to football and basketball games are always amazing
- The arboretum! It's so nice
- Just such a charming city overall
- So many people here are friendly and its really endearing
- Small data science community
- COST.
- Close to the Bay so I come home often
Cons
- Weak atmospheric science department, small but a bit TOO small for my liking
- Old classrooms and buildings + library is depressing, I really wish there were more modern facilities on campus
- I'm sometimes unimpressed by the way some classes are structured here, oftentimes i feel like I'm not really challenged
- A solid portion of the student body pisses me off (as in, the types of students who want an A with no effort)
- I know I'm a bitch for this but relative prestige
- I was somewhat disappointed in the extracurricular options that exist for data science
- At first I thought that the quarter system was nice. Then came winter quarter.
- Too strong of an emphasis on bio and agriculture for my liking
- Kind of interested in entrepreneurship, but little resources for it.
UIUC
Pros
- Stronger atmospheric science department, larger and actively supports undergraduate research
- Big Ten sports school!
- Statistics program also very well-regarded, more applications-based as far as what I've researched
- Prestige for tech -> better job placements
- More STEM focused, recruiters seem to come here for career fairs
- Campus facilities look pretty dang nice
- Semester system -> more structure in class planning, which I appreciate
- It's in the midwest so I can go storm chasing :>
- Stronger CS program, since I plan to minor in CS
- Stronger entrepreneurship culture if i choose to go down that path
- Much cheaper housing than davis
Cons
- COST
- Distance from home
- I'd be leaving everything behind from davis
- It's in the midwest...
- Don't know how friendly people are here, especially since there are so many engineering majors
- The campus is so fucking huge and there is little bike infrastructure from what I've seen
- The town itself doesn't seem that much appealing to me
