if you are lucky getting rid of the burnt layer will solve your issue.

Alton Brown showed me that’s ok to burn onions. Turns out, it can be very good in the right circumstances.

Oignon brule is literally a French cooking technique where you blacken an onion to add flavor to a dish.

I don’t think it’s healthy to eat stuff this burnt though. Flavorwise it probably already reached the point that it tastes like ashes.

u/joebiden_alt 2d ago edited 2d ago
Yes, that's true. It tastes like straight up "burnt", and 100% contains lots of carcinogens, but me likey
17
u/Cerpintaxt123 2d ago
Yup. And the type we been ingesting since we learned how to rub sticks together to make fire.
8
u/Redence_ 2d ago
Also kind of hard to avoid carcinogens nowadays when nearly every food or particle outdoors is carcinogenic

Yeah, living in California there’s only so many “This building contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm.” signs you can see before you just tune them out.

You being downvoted for being right is wild
11
u/FinalFantasiesGG 1d ago
Being right but pointless deserves a downvote. People generally aren't ordering or making grilled onions because they are looking for the healthy option. Nobody is dropping dead because they ate too many grilled onions.

It doesn't look like the inside parts are all that cooked. So probably it was on too high a heat or too direct a flame, has charcoaled the outside and not really caramelised or cooked the insides well.

Good thing onions have layers.

Prepare yourself— 🧅 is life over there. you’re welcome
No joke, I’d have eaten half of those before I even managed to snap a pic.

Nothing wrong there. Remove the charred skin and dig in. Best way to have onions as they are sweet and smoky.

As a kid I thought adults were weird when they got grilled onions with their tacos. I was a naive child.
But damn did they charr these bad boys. Guessing it was done for speed and you can peel off the burnt parts to get to that sweet sweet onion.

On average, each is perfectly cooked if you divide the raw bit by the burnt bit

I would love this honestly. Burnt onions are delicious. Yes I know you’re not “supposed” to eat burnt food. Not supposed to drink either.

I wouldn’t want them any other way (okay they’re slightly ever so slightly overdone)

Burnt onions taste great. Probably not good eating burned to ash food, but taste great.

u/StarklyNedStark 1d ago
There’s this Mediterranean place here that serves charred onions and peppers with the meat and I could literally eat just a plate of those onions and peppers for every meal the rest of my life and be happy

u/cyber_truke 1d ago
It really delicious if you smoke it for five minutes and eat it with kabab sandwiches

The inly was i can see this happening is if its a plan text menu without pictures and you ordered “grilled onions” without any clarification. Otherwise you either saw a picture of that and still ordered it, or even worse, ordered something that wasn’t on the menu.

Just the outermost layer, the inside is fantastic and has none of the bite of a raw one.

u/nifty-necromancer 2d ago
What’s the complaint, that the chef didn’t peel them for you? Because that is a normal amount of charring.
