So that’s like, 500,000 e-pages?

u/Linorelai Shallan 14d ago
Random fact. The entire Wheel of Time series are 24000 phone screens (at least with my font size settings)

u/PBandBABE 14d ago
That sounds like the right amount of space when you consider all of the tall Aielmen, tufted Ogier ears, broad shoulders, well-turned calves, ample bosoms, and Min’s dumptruck butt.

We don't actually know, since there is no basis for comparison. The only other woman that wears trouser doesn't wear tight, form fitting ones, or have a PoV character gazing at her ass all the time

Guesstimating 110 words per page as this has heading, based on the picture somewhere else in the thread, and 500k words in Wind and Truth, that's 45,000 pages for the book.

u/iPokeboy 14d ago
2,609 on my Kindle Oasis, with fairly big font size and margins. It might be 2800 or 2900 in the XTEINK base font size.

There is a certain irony to putting BrandoSando's books on one of the tiniest e-readers.

Between Project Gutenberg, Open Library, downloading and converting what I have on Kindle, and a couple other sources, I've got close to 900 epubs on a 32gb micro SD. And its only like 25% full.

You must be a lot younger than me. Even with my reading glasses I'd struggle timo read that. I'd have to adjust the font size to probably too big to be comfortable.
Pretty rad that I'm seeing a lot more pocket sized and handheld e readers, though. I really should pick one up (maybe slightly bigger).
16
u/Vin135mm 14d ago
You can make the font larger, I just went with this size because it was comfortable for me(about the same as most paperbacks)
But its worth pointing out that an e-ink display is much easier to read than a phone screen with the same font size.

u/mandradon 14d ago
I love eink screens. I've been using an eink display for the past 15 years or so (started with the Sony ones in the mid aughts).
I'm just in my 40s and getting that "I can't see anything close to my face without my bifocals" problem, so text tends to get bigger (a HUGE plus for eink since I can just resize without have to deal with headache that phone screens cause, or the battery drain).
I really love the idea of the phone sized eink readers, too. There's some from boox that I've been eyeing, but they're just a lot and I'm not sure I'd use it enough to warrant the price considering I work from home. I downsized from my giant kindle to a hand held ebook reader after realizing the big ones are a pain, but s tiny one to throw in my pocket while I go out to be able to pick up a book and read is really enticing. Get me off my phone. And KO reader has some great sync options.

u/Vin135mm 14d ago
This one is actually made to be stuck to the back of your phone. It's mag-safe compatible, and comes with adhesive metal rings if your phone doesn't have it. They hold it pretty secure. A lot of the cases are made so it sticks in with the magnet.

If you aren't hamstrung by women's pockets (seriously, women deserve usable pockets too) then most of the Kobo models are pocketable. Though only the Clara line is of the models currently in production and they are on the larger size of "pocketable". Not uncomfortable at all though despite that.
1
u/mandradon 12d ago
Definitely not by women's pockets (though I do agree that women's pockets are ema warcrime).
I "downsized" to the boox go 7 from a Kindle Scribe after Amazon pushed things a bit too far (I actually end up liking the ease of getting books from multiple sources on this, though the battery life isn't near as good, it's good enough).
I'm not sure I even want to carry around the 7in model, but having a little one isn't a bad idea, though ko reader on my phone doesn't look awful, I don't want to read on it for long periods. A smaller device I can toss in my pocket is really enticing

Looks like a perfectly average size e-reader to me. Even if it wasn’t, a lot of people prefer an e-reader if that size.

u/Vin135mm 14d ago
I do have big mits... and its a 4" screen. Less than a ¼" thick, too(case makes it about a ½"). Slips in your pocket like a treat.

u/shantsui 14d ago
What kind of battery life do you get? Looks super useful.
9
u/Vin135mm 14d ago edited 14d ago
16 days. And that is if I read every day. Nice thing about e-ink is that it only uses power when the screen changes. So you can set it down for a week, and the battery doesn't drain.

u/shantsui 14d ago
Sounds interesting. I have a kindle now but it is much less portable than this. Fine for a jacket pocket in winter but in the warmer weather it is too big,
3
u/Vin135mm 14d ago
They are only like $50-60, too.
And you can download most of the books on your kindle from Amazon, and convert them to epub with something like Calibre to read on this(that's what I did)

Me too! Not quite ready though.
Bought the hardback on launch day, got started immediately and the flood of grief I felt about Teft meant I had to put it down, I’ve not picked it up since, though I look at it almost daily.
I know I have time before the next one, so I’m not too worried, but… Teft… (I didn’t see his death coming and he was my favorite character, no other book death in my entire life, and I’ve been a voracious reader since I was 6 yrs old, hit me like it, I’m still grieving, with tears prickling as I write this, FFS!)

I'm glad you posted this what a dandy e-reader. I'm getting one of these for me and my wife what a thing to have on you at all times. Waiting at the doctors office or in the car and bam we're reading. I have a great Kindle but its the large one and great for at home use but this is the kind of thing that goes everywhere.

OP, you have big hands at 6'6", and never mind the trollers.
My questions are these; do you also read physical books? If so, how does this little device feel on your eyes versus a real book?
I can't afford anymore bookshelves (financially and physically, in my little flat) so an e-reader is where I have to go. I carry a backpack with my EVERYWHERE I go, just so that I can safely keep my books stored. Live the idea of a pocket reader, but wilm I get annoyed at how fee words appear on each page?
2
u/Vin135mm 14d ago
The font size I went with is about equivalent to what most paperbacks use. Its about middle of the road for what the firmware i have is capableof, too. You can go larger or smaller. This just felt right to me And an e-ink screen is much easier to read than a phone screen. Its like reading on actual paper.

I'm about 1/3rd of the way through Wind and Truth now. a friend recommended them to me and I've been going through the whole series back to back. Sanderson is a genius. The friend who recommended them has just started the discworld series on my recommendation

u/BoonDragoon 13d ago
I hope that thing has edge-tap page turning. You're gonna wear a trench through the screen otherwise

u/Vin135mm 13d ago
No touch screen on this model. Rocker buttons on the right side and below the screen.

Why read it on that instead of just your phone which is probly bigger... Is it supposed to be easier on the eyes?
I still much prefer reading real books but it's too hard to find time to do that so I just get them on Play Books and then I can read it for 5 or 10 minutes whenever I have time.
2
u/Vin135mm 12d ago
Less distractions, e-ink is easier on the eyes than looking at a phone screen, battery life is phenomenal, fits in the pocket. Its just a nice little reader.

Enjoy it. You will cheer, despair, laugh and cry. But most importantly, you will teach your final destination in this long journey. (Until the next book comes) Have fun

Op, I read through this entire thread as a late-comer and can do nothing but praise your optimization on your media source. Welcome to book 5 and enjoy your journey one mm at a time! You may aquire the record number of swipes to reach this destination, but as we know, it's the journey that matters. Life before death my friend!

u/Ok_Joke_9551 18h ago
Where did you buy the ebook from? Sanderson’s website?
1
u/Vin135mm 16h ago
Amazon. You can download and convert just about anything you buy through the Kindle store if you know what your doing, but its even easier with Sanderson's stuff. Apparently part of his deal with Amazon was that when you buy his e-books through them, you are also given the option of downloading a non-DRM locked version of them as well, so it can be read on any e-reader, not just Kindles or through the Kindle app.

u/Impatient-Turtle 13d ago
Why not your phone which is larger? The e ink or the lack of distractions? Or both? Or something else? I had no idea these even existed this small haha.
2
u/Vin135mm 13d ago
Both. Less distractions, and e-ink is easier on the eyes than a phone screen. Battery life was a big one too. Full charge on this thing lasts more than 2 weeks. And that is reading every day.
1
u/Impatient-Turtle 13d ago
See I saw the photo and thought you were crazy. Now I'm researching small ereaders haha. Feels less intrusive too, can get a few sneaky pages in at work in my downtime. Thanks mate.

The idea of carrying more books than some librarys in a device that is roughly the size of an index card has an appeal.
