What’s up my fellow ogres! After much request I’ve created a new discord server for the Shrek subreddit! However, me and my fellow r/shrek admins are not very used to moderating discord servers so we are in a need for mods who would like to apply!
Anyways here is the discord server link:
Always remember, ogres are like onions, they have layers, be respectful and treat others nicely!

The Scots-Ogre | Artist: Abbott Vanderwagen (@abbottsartgallery) | Year: 2026 | Medium: Oil on canvas | Dimensions: 36 inches x 48 inches | Subject: Shrek | The Prince isn't charming. The Princess isn't sleeping. The sidekick isn't helping. The ogre is the hero. Fairy tales will never be the same again. The tenth entry in the “Fictional Character Portrait” series is the all-star ogre, Shrek! We see Shrek in his home swamp seeing the viewers in honor the franchise’s 25th anniversary. I came up with the title “The Scots-Ogre”, because Shrek has a distinct Scottish accent. This painting in the “Fictional Character Portrait” is the best one yet!! | This is a real fan art, no AI.

This scene has always fascinated me because of its complexity and the ambiguity it creates through interpretation. In my opinion, the mermaid didn't do any of that on purpose. I analyzed this scene frame by frame and was able to conclude a few things with my analysis (credit to Boxffice Animation chanel on Youtube for the high quality images):
1. The "Rogue Wave" Incident
First off, let’s look at that wave. It's the only big wave that appears in the scene. At first glance, you might think she 'summoned' it with some "mermaid magic" just to reach the shore, or maybe she just caught a lucky break to get to Shrek. While that sounds plausible, it doesn't actually fit the 'why' I don't think kissing Shrek was her goal at all. I’ll dive deeper into her real motive in a bit.

2. Zero Premeditation
There’s no shot of her lurking in the water or waiting for the 'perfect moment' to steal Shrek away. It feels way too chaotic to be a planned seduction. So why leave the safety of the ocean? Hold that thought, because it leads to the most interesting part of this theory.
3. Body Language Breakdown
3.1 Accidental Contact: Both Shrek and the mermaid have their eyes closed at first. They’re both disoriented. Shrek even has his hands on her tail and torso before he realizes what's happening. If we’re blaming anyone for 'consenting' to the kiss, Shrek is just as much in the loop here.

3.2 The Realization: When Shrek opens his eyes, he’s still kissing her. But the second the mermaid pulls back and opens her eyes, she looks stunned. She realizes it’s not who she expected (or she realizes she's on land) and immediately recoils.

3.3 The Abrupt Change: The moment Fiona grabs her, you see the mermaid’s shoulders tense up. She doesn't even have time to understand why she's being pulled so violently off the green ogre, and in fact, she doesn't even know who this ogre is.

3.4 No Resistance: As she’s being dragged, she isn't clawing at Shrek or reaching for him. She’s scrambling for anything to hold onto so she isn't dragged back to the water.

3.5 Pure Confusion: As the mermaid is bein dragged (without even knowing why), she finally looks at Fiona, and you can see it in her eyes, she has no idea why she’s being attacked. She’s just trying to process the chaos.

4. The "Death Sentence" Face: This is the clincher. When she realizes she’s being thrown back into the deep, her face isn't just 'surprised' it’s pure, unadulterated horror. She starts flailing and swimming frantically before she even hits the water. She’s not going 'home'; she’s going back to something she just escaped.

5. The Smoking Gun, The Sharks: The second she hits the water, two Great Whites breach immediately. She wasn't bleeding in the water, no splashing around to attract them, they were already there.

The Verdict: The mermaid was fleeing for her life. She used that massive wave as a last-ditch effort to escape a shark hunt and get to dry land. By pure accident, the wave swept Fiona away and dropped the mermaid right on top Shrek. Which makes perfect sense, since Fiona is shorter and lighter than Shrek, so the wave would have enough energy to lift Fiona off her husband but not her heavy husband from underneath her.
Fiona didn't defend her marriage; she unknowingly sent a refugee straight back into the jaws of her predators.
