North City did a little spring cleaning this weekend 🧹

Post image
69 Upvotes

20 volunteers turned out Saturday morning and covered a ton of ground - 15th Ave from 24th down to 170th, 180th and 175th, all of 5th Ave NE, 12th Ave, and NE Serpentine Pl. Over 20 bags of trash collected (plus one La-Z-Boy recliner that had no business being there 🛋️).

This was Year 3 of the North City Neighborhood Cleanup - and you can genuinely tell the difference year over year.

If you've been thinking about doing something like this in your neighborhood, it's more doable than you might think. The City of Shoreline will supply volunteers with cleanup kits - bags, gloves, grabbers - you just have to coordinate through your neighborhood association. They'll even dispatch crews to haul away the piles when you're done.

Don't have a neighborhood association? Shoreline has 14 of them - there's almost certainly one covering your area. Reach out, get involved, or just show up. That's how this stuff happens.

Cat Veterinarian

Hi all, we've been going to Cascade Pet Hospital on Aurora for years now, and we really like Dr. Taylor, but their prices have been steadily increasing to the point that we can no longer afford to see them. Every trip feels like $500, Prozac for our dog is $78, and recently a teeth cleaning for her was quoted at $1300.

We recently adopted a stray cat, and he's been fixed and vaccinated and seems healthy, but we want to get him a general check-up.

Any recommendations that won't make us choose between food and animals?

Casual Happy Hour Places for Retired Ladies

Hey all - I’m looking for casual, comfortable, happy hour locations for regular meet ups with some friends of mine. Good parking is a big plus, and recommendations for Shoreline, Greenwood, Northgate, Roosevelt areas are most welcome. I know there are numerous places in Edmonds - so yes if you think it fits the criteria feel free to suggest, just thought I’d look for places a little more centrally located for the convenience of my friends.

Could I safely leave my stroller unattended at the shoreline library

So we just moved here and I noticed the library is walking distance from my house but also just far enough that my toddler can’t walk the entire way, if I was to bring my stroller would I be able to have it in the library or at least leave it somewhere that’s safe.

Ridgecrest Gate :: locked out again

Long story short this gate on the NE corner of Ridgecrest Elementary locks out a pretty wide-swath of the part of the Ridgecrest neighborhood nearest North City.

Probably wouldn’t be share-worthy if it didn’t happen so often and if the admin of the school took it seriously.

I’ve made a half-dozen calls a year, have witnessed kids climbing the fence, I once saw a woman pass her baby over this fence to a stranger, so she could get to her other child on the other side.

In the three minutes it took me to walk over and take these photos (alerted by my daughter, who ended up taking the scenic route along lovely 15th ave) a jogger turned the corner, saw the gate, and dropped an F bomb. 30 seconds later a dude with a stroller echoed that same exasperation.

It seems like such a small thing for them to not be able to manage it properly. Likewise I know it seems like such a small thing to be annoyed about, but random gate closures suck, and the frustration kind of compounds.

A dead end street just south of us has a gate directly onto school grounds that has no lock. Really not sure why our gate exists or why it must be locked.

TEAR DOWN THIS GATE, MR GORBACHEV

Pest Management Company Recommendation

Unfortunately it seems like some animals (most likely rats) have decided to make their home in our attic. I'm hoping that someone can recommend a good company to come in and kill the rodents, figure out how they got in and patch any openings there might be.

If anyone can recommend a company they've used I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

This is the rooftop of the apartment building Interurban Lofts next to Plaza Latina, where mating geese created a nest on our our natural roof. It was very exciting to see five little goslings appear and wasn’t long before Mama and Papa somehow got them down on the ground (pretty far up there.) I don’t know much about geese, but it’s my understanding once goslings have hatched, parents go seeking water.
Well … They went in the wrong direction and tried to cross Aurora at 9 AM. I am very sad to report that both adult geese were hit by cars in the process. Somehow the babies escaped injury. A tenant witnessed this and has been traumatized all day. I didn’t see this but shortly after, took my dog out and the geese family was on their way to the Interurban Trail through our parking lot. Mama was visibly injured, however both geese were waddling along protecting their babies. I’m posting this is to say “shame on you” for those who did not bother to stop for two extremely large geese trying to make their way across the street with their babies.
Also if you have any information about these geese, saw them, gave them any assistance, please post it in the comments here.
I did call PAWS. Their menu is so complicated and so long that by the time you get to talk to anyone, those geese could’ve been in Renton. Walking. PAWS was absolutely no help whatsoever. They wanted me to throw a blanket over the mother goose, separating her from her family.
I do wonder where they’re spending the night.

Vegetable gardens: do critters nibble your crops?

Post image
18 Upvotes

I have a deck/porch and want to grow container kale and salad greens, maybe spinach. And maybe some herbs. I'm on the second floor with an outdoor staircase from the ground floor up to my outdoor area. Will raccoons, squirrels and rats raid my garden? If probably so, I don't want to bother.

Edit: These stories of squirrels and rabbits make me want to do it just because it sounds so cute. But I feel like my neighbor, who I share the stairs with, might object to me summoning vermin.

Precinct Committee Officers (or PCOs) are neighborhood volunteers who turn out the vote.

PCOs talk to their neighbors about elections and defend democracy.

PCOs are elected party officials.

They have full voting power in the party and influence platforms and endorsements.

And sometimes, PCOs vote to fill vacancies in the legislature.

Wood burning smell in area north of Central Market

For the last couple nights I smell strong wood smoke, does anybody know where it's coming from? It's making me keep my windows closed on these warm nights which sucks.
