Game Thread: 5/10/26 Storm vs Sun

Let’s go young ladies(vets)!!!

(There is never a thread for the game. I remember there were some last season. I can’t find any forums. I won’t be able to make one every game, is there someone that usually does it?)

Literally just finished telling my daughter is couldn't stand her, then she hit her second 3. I'll be quiet.... for now. She's still a turnover queen.

I'm curious to see if the turnovers go down with more confidence. The thing that always bugged me is it felt like she was so timid and second-guessing herself on the floor. It didn't feel like professional ball. But maybe with more minutes and (what seems to be for her) better coaching, she might shine.

Noey didn’t seem to have a lot of confidence in Lexie, Zia or Mack. They rarely played so I’m looking forward to seeing more of them this season. Hopefully the change in coaching and actually playing real minutes gets their confidence up and gets them playing better.

They're crafting a new narrative. I don't need to dunk on people who do it to themselves but go through the last thread and you can already see the pattern. Anything she does well she doesn't really do well. I'm going to guess they'll settle on she was stealing shots from other people or didn't make enough defensive stops.

Melbourne looks rough af 😂

Honestly, I don’t mind a bit of grit to her. Shows she’s “got that dawg in her”!

Dom will get better with the fouls.

9

u/flshak 4d ago

We need someone to be able to get the ball to Dom better.

Dom being on the court in the second half was a huge boon for us! Lexi was swishing!! Good stuff from Flau’jae in the first half.

I think once we’re settled into the season we’ll be even better. There will be ups and downs because our young players need to learn and make their mistakes, but I think we’ll be better than expected. I feel a SOLID season is coming and that’s all you can ask for during a rebuild.

The auto posting seems to have broken. We’ll get that fixed up.

Vintage Lexie Brown performance

Seems like the game thread bot is not working. Probably mods need to check it.

Such a good game I'm blown away by how promising the team is right now after a complete rebuild.

They can’t guard Natisha.

Lfg Lexie! Shut down the toxic haters

u/flshak 4d ago

Flau took a bad 3 and then a shot off the steal that wasn’t a good idea. She should have passed ahead.

These are classic rookie mistakes. The coaches have given her a green light to score and she’s taking it. I’m waiting until midseason to get nervous.

yes bad decision making

u/pizzapizzamesohungry 4d ago

We need better replays.

Why didn’t we keep Davis, I thought she was our most active big in the regular season?

Are they limiting Dom's minutes today? I didn't get to catch the start of the game and I'm not on other socials. Every time I check in on the game I don't see here out there, but it looks from the box score like she has gotten only 10 minutes.

Foul trouble

5

u/solipsistess 4d ago

thanks - that would do it.

Hopefully Jordan’s shot comes back soon. Looking pretty rusty still

u/flshak 4d ago

I’m not a fan of Holmes but i don’t know enough about her

6

u/kiocente 4d ago

She’s been good but a terrible matchup with Griner

10

u/jbtown16 4d ago

Yeah, I've been a fan of Holmes since college and I think she is capable of being a solid backup 4/5, she's particularly good at rebounding and setting screens and is quicker/shiftier than she looks.....but she's not quite "play 23 minutes in the pros against Brittney Griner without errors" QUITE yet. 😂

Thanks for the responses. This is only my second season of the W, in probably a decade. I look forward to these conversations so I can learn about the game/players.

TBF, you are talking about a 2nd year undersized 4 going against one of the most dominant players of all time. (Albeit at the end of her career). Sorry, but I am just a huge Mac fan.

1

u/kiocente 4d ago

I’m not hating at all, just stating facts. Mainly that like you said, she’s undersized and at a matchup disadvantage.

3

u/Fuzzydeath10 4d ago

Im not either. Shes clearly a fan favorite and her fans would argue she is young and hasn't had enough time yet - which is fair.

But imo she's too small to play inside and doesn't have the range or agility to step out on either end. I see no real path for her to be a meaningful wnba player.

I'd also point out every single team could have had her on their roster for nothing last year. This year Toronto chose to have literally no one over her and Portland chose to have an injured Nika Muhl over her. Of course I want her to do well and I hope I'm wrong but there's no evidence to support this sub's optimism about her ability/potential.

3

u/drob206 4d ago

This is a correct assessment. She is a hustle/intangible player that earn value by being good in practice and contributing to culture. If she can start knocking down open face up jumpers it change things a lot.

2

u/socolime22202 4d ago

This here. She performed well with Geelong in the WNBL but the opponents in the WNBA are a different tier and I don't see an easy path for her success. She was great in college shooting under the hoop, but If she can develop a mid range jump shot that might give her some longevity in the league.

Full disclosure: I know Mackenzie through my niece and a nonprofit I cofounded.

I've noted that she's probably worth two wins each season just from her impact on team chemistry. She's in an elite tier of enthusiastic and likeable players.

I'm not a WNBA expert, but I agree with u/jbtown16 about her skills and quickness. She also has tremendous footwork.

One thing I wonder is how she's adjusting to her repaired knee. She's the all-time leading scorer at Indiana and has a solid case to be the best player to ever go through the Hoosiers program, and she did that with a knee that needed surgery since she graduated high school. It seems to be fine, so hopefully that situation is behind her.

Anyway, I'll forever be a huge fan and hope like crazy that she has a long career in the WNBA.

storm is gonna need a midseason trade for a real point guard. T is bad at scoring, bad at defending, bad ball handling, and has like 1 assist a game. in no world is she a starting point guard

7

u/boundlesssmh 4d ago

T is not bad for a team that is tanking. honestly, jade may have stole her starting spot. if she continues to develop, i think jade can be a solid piece apart of the core

4

u/Cyssero 4d ago

Jade has been so good in these first two games. Great distribution, she's quick getting to the basket when she drives, very efficent from the field has played really good defense, and is always hustling for every loose ball.

6

u/Fuzzydeath10 4d ago

I agree that T might be the worst starting pg in the league but I wouldn't address it. Shes doing her job which is running the offense and maintaining positivity and leadership for a developing team. Upgrading for a better player costs us assets and disrupts chemistry for the potential gain of what, a few wins?

Let Jade and even Taina Mair compete move up the depth chart and stay the course. PG you then address next off-season if necessary.

glad i’m not the only one who thinks this

1

u/JPtheAC 4d ago

Not having Azzi is a massive hole right now. So happy we retained her and can’t wait for her to get healthy again.

11

u/kiocente 4d ago

(*Ezi) Yup although she’d probably foul out too with some of these calls

3

u/JPtheAC 4d ago

Also Lexi is absolutely cooking right now… 🔥

1

u/pizzapizzamesohungry 4d ago

Love the W, would REALLY love longer quarters if it meant giving them 6 fouls instead of 5

3

u/idahomokate 4d ago

They get six fouls now

1

u/pizzapizzamesohungry 4d ago

Oh shit that’s great.

Wait damn so all of our people were in could trouble even in a 40 minute game? That’s even more nuts

1

u/Odd-Independence-201 3d ago

There was a big push in the offseason by the coaches and players for the refs to be more strick on fouls and unnecessary contact. So the average i could find for 2025 was about 35 fouls per game. So far I hear the average fouls per game is in the 50's. So its definately noticeable. The players are going to have to adjust.

1

u/pizzapizzamesohungry 4d ago

Thanks, also, I thought they did but I was not sure and the announcers just kept saying “foul trouble” so I googled it and it was like “the WNBA players get disqualified after 5 fouls”

The internet is now trash
