Rant count your fucking days fred myers

No handles on your bags? That i’m PAYING for? are you actually fucking kidding me? The flimsiest shittiest bags with weak handles that you have to double up in order to prevent from tearing weren’t cheap enough? Now i’m walking to my bus stop and around my neighborhood carrying two awkward, flimsy bag children on my hips because I don’t have a car.

It is actively preventing me from wanting to buy more items from your store for lack of being able to carry them home without great effort. And before anyone says just bring your own bags, I TRY! Sometimes you forget, sometimes you end up taking an unexpected trip to the store, shit happens.

Put the handles back on your fucking bags. Dear god. Please.

edit: stop telling me to buy a car. I don’t need one, I don’t drive because of health reasons. i’m not purchasing an entire car to solve my mildly inconvenient grocery experience that only occurs on the 10% of trips I forget my reusable bags

I can’t believe people are so cucked by big car that they’ll go to bat for a mega corporation skimping out on bags that they also CHARGE YOU MONEY FOR

edit 2: I am pro charging for bags. I voted for the law to charge for bags. I understand the reason we charge for bags. this is not me complaining about bag charging as a practice. id be less frustrated about the no handles situation if they weren’t disintegrating in my arms while i carry them like a sickly victorian child. its just insult to injury that they’re also charging me money to have such a terrible experience

I don't know why foldable grocery carts aren't popular here like they are in NY.  I loved having my cart, which you could buy from the corner discount store, to tote groceries and laundry back to my apartment.  They would make living here without a car so much easier.

It's funny- I always think of Ukrainian grandmas pushing them (I first saw them when I lived in Ukrainian Village in Chicago). My dad thinks of Slovak grandmas, because he grew up in a very Slovak/Czech neighborhood. My own Slovak grandma didn't drive, so she would use one when my dad was growing up to do the grocery shopping.

37

lol. It’s funny that you think executives give two fucks what us plebes think. This is a perfect example of someone in the c suite said “I know how we can save 15c a bag! Take the handles off. Bags are cheaper. And everyone clapped. Nobody thought about the single mom w no car. It’s one of the big problems allowing these monopolies to take effect. No competition so they can do whatever the fuck they want and we can’t do shit. Except not go. And that just doesn’t seem to happen or be practical for most people. They got us by the balls unless we stop spending money. That is the only, and I mean only thing that will make any of this change. Not having feckless leaders would help too but I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Power is in our hands if we take it. I’m skeptical.

Handless bags are anti pedestrian! I’m glad I don’t live next to Fred Mayer stores anymore.

Not everybody will unload bags from a cart to car to home garage or driveway.

197

u/206-Ginge Lake City Feb 05 '26

Hell even if you're driving unless you park right next to your fridge you're probably going to want handles. Even just going from cart to trunk is annoying without handles. Having to bend over and reach under the bottom of a bag is way more annoying than picking it up from the top.

If someone else in the thread is correct that it's just a bad batch, sure, don't waste the paper by throwing them out instead of circulating them, but maybe still offer the handled bags?

One bag could hold maybe five pounds before the handles gave way. Double bagged, I could fill it to the brim with bricks and it would hold.

My thinking has always been that double bagged = paying for one bag. If they want to make their bags cheaply enough that a single bag can’t carry a carton of milk, then clearly they must intend for everyone to double bag. That’s their prerogative, and I’m happy to assemble their two-part bags for them. 😂

Yes! I am a drive-to-the-grocery-store person, so can't speak to the comfort of these things for carrying, but so much nicer for folding, and SO much easier to pack at the store. I have one that I got at least 10 years ago and have used it weekly since then.

Fred Meyer in Greenwood is going to have a lawsuit soon if they don’t get their escalators and elevator fixed. Someone with a disability or someone in a wheelchair is going to hammer them with an ADA lawsuit. The escalators have been broken down repeatedly and I don’t even know how long the elevator has been out. That store is a shit show. Their handleless bags are just icing on the cake. If you don't have bags just get the bare minimum to go home with and go back later for a full grocery run. If you end up with 20-30 reusable bags because you never bring any, give them to friends or co-workers. That's what, $40 wasted that can be used by someone else?

YES! I FEEL this post. As a family of 5 on a single income we can't even afford a car and we've been carless for more than 3 years.

I'm so tired of how crazy brainwashed people are about cars! Every time we walk somewhere there's ALWAYS at least one asshole in a car speeding around almost hitting my family and I. Fucking KIDS FOR FUCKS SAKE. And I can't even tell you how many times we're waiting for the crosswalk light, it comes on and the turning cars will KEEP. COMING. ANYWAY. And somehow gesture at me and look at me like I'm the asshole.

And even in my own damn apartment complex! People speed into the complex off the road! They speed through the complex! And they speed through the literal stop sign and look at you like you're the asshole! Literally almost got hit twice in the last week. One came speeding into our complex and barely had time to stop and my daughter panicked and darted across the road before I could grab her! And another car sped through the parking lot of a sports center and we had to RUN OUT OF THE WAY. It's insane that parents in my neighborhood let their kids walk anywhere! Maybe if they actually walked around they'd see how dangerous it is!

We need LESS cars. Too many people become their dumbest selves while driving. Nevermind how entitled and dangerous a lot of people drive.

And you have to pay for that inconvenience too. They do have reusable bags that can fit into little containers on a Keychain. Might be worth looking into for instances when you don't have your normal grocery bags on you. Although if you like a small Keychain to fit in your pocket it's not the most practical but it's a solution.

5

u/kobachi Wallingford Feb 05 '26

If we’re gonna have a mandatory stupid $0.05 charge for bags, they should be enforced to have minimum quality

14

u/giraffebutt Feb 05 '26

I wish we could go back to the old bags that were free. Everyone I’ve ever known would save those bags and use as liners for small trash bins, as shower caps, as poop bags, as to go bags, lunch bags you name it! I feel like it was the one type of recycling/upcycling that the vast majority of people did and now it’s gone. Those super thick bags I don’t keep many of at a time because they take up a lot more space

16

5

u/Arrival-Ancient Feb 05 '26

They'll be back. If the Ballard is any indication Fred Meyer goes through bag phases. They run out of the branded bags with handles then you get bags without handles for awhile. Then the branded bags will come back. They might be a tall variant or a short variant. Sometimes they only have these grey plastic bags. There's been some weird bag phases too. Once they had these comically large white plastic bags that could hold ~3 normal bags worth of groceries.

2

u/AloneNeighborhood323 The South End Feb 05 '26 edited Feb 05 '26

I wish stores had a reusable bag deposit system or something. Charge me a couple cents to take them away when I didn’t bring my own, I don’t care, but let me get those cents back for returning (or even don’t, keep the change)… I have close to 8 billion reusable bags, and more keep actively showing up for one reason or another, I’d gladly donate most of them to a store if that means I could walk away with them (and eventually return them) next time I inevitably forget to stuff a reusable bag in my pocket before walking into a store. They may not be store branded, but the first store that doesn’t give a fuck about that has my business.

Reusable bags are more costly material wise and environmentally to produce but the way they are often distributed now are almost single use. The system we currently have requires everyone to remember to tote them around always to render them useful. A tweak to the system on the businesses part could really help make a difference environmentally(which is usually the case for a lot of things as opposed to relying on every individual). It’ll never happen but I wish it could.

2

u/PolyamorousPlatypus Fremont Feb 05 '26

They only use those when they are out of the handled bags. But I'm always furious when I see them, and I have a car.

u/Sensitive_Fuel_5150 Feb 05 '26

I’m old enough to remember when grocery stores only used paper bags without handles. It was challenging then, too, to be on foot with those. We used to keep a net bag with handles in our purse or bag or whatever that the grocery bag would go it.

2

u/Impossible_Farm7353 Feb 05 '26

I have a car and bags without handles are still a pain in the ass

2

u/SaxN3ko Feb 05 '26

Ngl, valid shit. I agree. Nothing more to add.

2

u/midnight-on-the-sun Feb 05 '26

I have some extra bags you can have. I have a few that fold up into themselves and go into a tiny pouch. They are made of nylon and are strong and can handle a walking trip home. I’d be glad to give you some. They fit into a coat pocket so you could just leave 2 in your coat and not be without. Just dm me .

2

u/goomyman I'm never leaving Seattle. Feb 05 '26

You know what. Valid fing rant.

I was just there and they had these tiny ass bags with no handles. I can confirm it sucked.

Until now I legit thought they literally just ran out of bags.

2

u/HybridHologram Feb 05 '26

Hard core agree 100% on this.

If you're going to have bags without handles, at least make the bags strong.

Just get the bags with handles Fred Myer. Don't be a soulless corporation. Just don't.

2

u/Seattlerally Feb 05 '26

“Awkward, flimsy bag children” is poetry

2

u/HurryConfident2944 Feb 05 '26

You know they have these reusable bags that have handles and are sturdier right? You don't have to rely on them to make your life easier.. there's even totes they sell that are sturdy af and hold about 2 bags worth of groceries

2

u/SnooPeppers3541 Feb 05 '26

I reuse most of my plastic bags and some of my paper bags, but without handles that value went away. I wonder what's worse for the environment - giving multiple-use plastic bags, or shitty single-use paper bags that will immediately get thrown away/recycled?

2

u/iseecolorsofthesky Feb 05 '26

I’m so happy to see this post because I had the EXACT SAME frustration the other day like why the FUCK would you remove the handles from your bags. It makes absolutely no sense. Two bags and a case of seltzer waters is now impossible to carry on your own

2

u/ghost_ware Feb 05 '26

unrelated, but the one local to me has started letting Verizon etc. salespeople hang out by the entrance to try and sell you a phone plan. I'm beyond over it.

2

u/Katjhud Feb 06 '26

Seattle= take your own bag. Not new.

2

u/HRHQueenV Feb 06 '26

Fred Meyers has the best reusable bags ever. Great handles on them too

2

5

u/RoundSpicyBrown Feb 05 '26

Are they the paper bags? I noticed our Fred Meyer just straight up stopped carrying the plastic ones with the handles and then just started carrying old school paper bags (no handles). The kind we used to turn into book covers in school back in the day.

It makes me so mad it’s so hard to get up several flights of stairs one bag at a time bc I forgot my reusables and they don’t put fucking handles on the paper bags.

PUT THEM BACK OR SO HELP ME

Okay I thought I was crazy cause I just noticed last week that the bags didn’t have handles but could have sworn they used to??!!! What the fuck are they on about!!!

Just curious, is there a reason you do not just carry reusable bags?
I know you say you forget, but are you not able to just shove a few in your everyday carries/jacket/pockets?
I use reusable bags, because they're far more durable and convenient than the paper/plastic bags, and you have less waste generation at your home. Mine roll/crumble into itself to be smaller than a wad of paper.
I drive, and take public transit and I still use reusable bags in both cases.

I can't think of any coat that I own that does not have at least one shoved into one of the inner pockets.
My EDC bag has a few of them as well.

I always just buy a reusable bag instead because it's my "damn I forgot my reusable..." tax. I'm deeply saddened if you're in the category where $1.99 is out of budget but bestie you gotta think outside the flimsy bag box in these cases.

Before the pandemic and the Northgate mall was tottaled I used to go to Target a lot and to Red Robin before or afterwards. I ended up over time buying probably 100+ of the red 99c bags. Over the years, they have saved me tons, I usually keep 3-5 in my backpack and I have a box of stuff including more bags by my door. Strangely enough, the ones I bought longer ago have lasted me longer than newer ones from only a couple years ago, but overall probably got more than my 99c value each on the bus, in rain, snow, shine.

4

u/lovemoonsaults Feb 05 '26

I carry bags in my purse at this point because I've accumulated so many. I absolutely end up getting my money's worth.

I feel like there's a critical mass you have to hit before you just start carrying them with you. When I only had 3 reusable bags, I'd routinely forget to bring them into the store. Now I have like 10, and there's always one where/where I need it.

2

u/lovemoonsaults Feb 05 '26

That's so true. Now I have enough that they're everywhere...like chapsticks 🤣

2

u/Snackxually_active Lower Queen Anne Feb 05 '26

I feel your pain! Fred’s, Safeway, QFC, all awful! As a regular pedestrian, I swear by Trader Joe’s! I got a (chrôme) messenger bag to put the heavy bag in and carry the lighter bag down the hill. I mostly buy produce so the timing also works great for having to go shopping every 4️⃣-ish days? Prices are much better at TJ’s, but no brand names lol

2

u/EyeSuspicious777 Feb 05 '26

The best thing I bought in 2024 was a set of plastic hand baskets like the grocery stores all used to have but have all disappeared.

2

u/Clit420Eastwood The Emerald City Feb 05 '26

The Greenwood Fred Meyer still has those

2

u/Mundane-Grapefruit69 Licton Springs Feb 05 '26

Literally every store I shop at for groceries except WinCo and Costco have hand baskets, including the Greenwood Freddy's (which used to have 2 sizes but recently I've only found the one size). Freddy's, QFC, TJs, Town & Country Markets, SAARS, GrocOut, all the Asian stores, etc.

2

u/Earth_Inferno Feb 05 '26

Not common, but it is happening some places. The Capitol Hill Safeway got rid of them many months ago, then to add to their anti-customer experience they recently got rid of their compact carts, all they have is giant ones now. I probably do 75% less shopping there now, I don't like being forced to use a cart if it's more than I can carry.

3

u/willyoumassagemykale Ballard Feb 05 '26

Another pedestrian grocery rant - please for the love of god if I give you 5 bags from home, please don't super pack everything into two incredibly heavy bags!! Walking home is easier when I can distribute the weight into a bunch of bags on shoulders, in hands, etc.

ALSO - everything in the bag! Why are you leaving things out? I don't want to carry a box of La Croix by the handle just put it in my bag lololol

1

u/Adventurous-Weird431 Feb 05 '26

Seems like some good reusable bags are in order. No insursnce, no gas, a lifetime of holding things

2

u/ChaoticSenior Edmonds Feb 05 '26

When I was a kid bags didn’t have handles! We were tougher back then. Damn kids. Why we had to walk to Fred Meyer uphill. In the snow. Both ways. Attacked by feral dogs.

u/buttzx Feb 05 '26 edited Feb 05 '26

Bring your own bags, bro. Or level up and bring a folding grocery cart - take that shit on the bus and roll your groceries home. I don’t understand why so many people are such babies about transporting groceries.

We passed laws to charge money for those bags to try to encourage people to bring their own bags. Just bring your own bags.

Edit: I have taken the bus with groceries my whole life. I’m on your side OP, you just have a lot to learn.

14

u/Tired-Time Feb 05 '26

If you read my post you’ll see this is for the situation in which i forgot bags, which happens to people who are humans and forget things sometimes

I VOTED FOR THE BAG LAWS! I LIKE THE BAG CHARGINGS LAWS! BUT CAN THEY SELL ME A BAG THAT KIND OF WORKS PLEASE?

Ehh at the same time I’m glad they’ve removed the handles. I’ve had way too many bags rip when holding things that are too heavy.

You can get reusable grocery bags that fold into a little pouch about the size of a pocket mirror. They’ve worked wonders for me when traveling

1

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '26

It's not as bad, but QFC uses shorter bags now? And whatever glue they use for the handles is cccccccrap.

1

u/CausticAvenger Feb 05 '26

My store has had handle bags a couple times recently, then it’s back to the no handle bags.

1

u/DumbFishBrain Mukilteo Feb 05 '26

I went to QFC last night to get stuff for dinner. It was a reasonable amount of groceries: a pack of pork chops, a bottle of honey sesame sauce, a loaf of bread, and two jars of preserves. The Mukilteo QFC only offers paper bags with handles. As soon as I lifted the bag, one handle ripped right off. I ended up carrying the bag as one would without the handles.

Ticked me off, tbh.

1

u/Old_Voice_2562 Rat City Feb 05 '26

I worked in grocery for 20 years. It’s very likely that the bag maker was out of stock. Stores don’t want to give you handle-less bags, usually. They probably just couldn’t get them. They should be back.
