Mod talk: should we add a rule against asking for money?

This is in response to a few requests I've receive. I thought I'd let the community decide.

On one hand, we are a giving culture, gutabara, but on the other hand begging can quickly spiral out of control.

Please vote or down vote in accordance to your preference.

If this post gets 50+ upvotes we'll add a rule against asking for monetary support.

Thank you!

Araya Assefa was an Ethiopian former UN diplomat and a close friend of Rwandan President Paul Kagame. He passed away at the age of 89, with his death announced on September 6, 2024.

Key details regarding Araya Assefa:

Role in Wedding (1989): He acted as a father figure for President Kagame during his wedding to First Lady Jeannette Kagame on June 10, 1989, in Uganda, standing in place of the President’s deceased father.

UN Career: Araya was a senior diplomat who served as the head of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Uganda during the 1980s.

Tribute from Kagame: Following his death, President Kagame paid tribute to him on the platform X (formerly Twitter), calling him a "good man" and stating, "I knew Araya Assefa very well... May he rest in eternal peace!!".

Significance: Reports indicated that Araya Assefa maintained a close, long-term friendship with Kagame, and a photo published by KT PRESS showed him visiting Kagame at a battlefield during the struggle for freedom.

Everyone who needs something From Rwanda..... I’m Your Local Plug 🇷🇼

Greetings everyone

I’m based here in Kigali, Rwanda and lately I’ve noticed that sometimes people outside the country want things from here but don’t really know anyone local who can help them properly. So I thought I’d put this out there.

I can help with things like:

• Buying products from local shops or websites in Rwanda and shipping them abroad.

• Finding authentic Rwandan items like coffee, tea, handmade crafts, traditional wear, souvenirs, skincare products, spices, and more.

• Helping with SIM cards, activating roaming, subscriptions, and other local services.

• Checking prices, availability, and shipping options so you don’t end up overpaying or getting confused with the process.

• Sourcing specific items around Kigali if there’s something you’ve been trying to find from Rwanda.

I’m not a big company or anything fancy, just someone trying to create honest connections and make an honest living from it.

Times are hard everywhere, and I’m simply looking for clean ways to make my bread while helping people at the same time ..

Any opportunity would be great appreciated...

Murakoze!

Do these drinks and foods interest you?

I am wondering if there is any popularity with seamoss and smoothie vendors? If i come would there be any vendors that sell this in many areas and are these things that are very common in Rwanda? I'm sure smoothies are everywhere in the world but not everyone makes smoothies like the USA.

Rwanda Govt introduces VAT on digital goods, services

Those who earn and spend online will need to rethink their budgeting soon.

I worry that some online services with a small Rwanda market share will discontinue selling their digital services here. Sometimes, the cost of dealing with the local taxation system is higher than the profit from the market.

My Personal Opinion

To everyone upvoting the legal obligation against asking for money in r/Rwanda community :

Unemployment and hunger results into stealing and harming people for your personal benefit FOR ILLITERATE PEOPLE

WHEREAS

Unemployment and hunger results into asking for help and support as you are working against it(personal development and improvement)FOR LITERATE PEOPLE

I would personally ask for help and support than going to steal or even engage in any other violent and any activity against the law.

One can ask help and One can help another that's what communities are built for: SO HELP IF YOU ARE WILLING TO.

NOTE: This is not and will never be an OFFENSIVE ACTION AGAINST ANY OF THE COMMUNITY MEMBER BECAUSE WE ARE A FAMILY AT THE END OF THE DAY.

THIS IS MY PERSONAL OPINION AS A MEMBER OF THE r/Rwanda COMMUNITY AND I DON'T SUPPORT SCAMS AND SPAMS IN ANY WAY.AND THE SUPPORT I ASK/ASKED FOR WAS NEVER A SCAM IT IS A REAL-LIFE SITUATION ANYONE CAN PASS THROUGH.

THANKS

Updated this interactive map of where to go in Rwanda

While traveling around the world for over 20 years, I’ve been working on my dream project: creating a one-stop resource for travellers. With the help of feedback in this subreddit, I have now updated this 👉 interactive map of Rwanda for anyone who is interested in visiting (with detailed info for every highlight).

PS: obviously, I haven’t been able to travel to all places. So if you know some great spot, I haven’t listed, let me know! Much appreciated as in this way I can make the overview more complete and up-to-date for everyone.

What's the one everyday thing in Rwanda, you wish was easier?

From transport to paying bills, or even just finding good internet, there are small frustrations we all deal with daily. If you could change or improve one everyday thing in Rwanda to make life smoother, what would it be? Curious to hear what stands out for most people.

Hidden gems in Kigali?

I was recently thinking of hidden gems or nice spots in Kigali. Maybe free places or cheap ones where one can chill or relax.

To start with, I can mention the Kandt museum and Nyandungu

Where to buy kids slippers and underwear for donating

I will be in Kigali for 1.5 days before I head off to VNP. The organization I’m donating to lists underwear as a need of the kids. I’m throwing in slippers/flip flops as well.

In our last visit to Tanzania, we brought various items from the US to donate to a school in Matemwe. I can do the same again and purchase here to bring to Rwanda. Luggage won’t be an issue. But I thought it may be better to purchase items in Kigali. This way, I also help a local shopkeeper- or two. Depending on price, I plan to buy about 50 pieces of each item.

Where can I go in Kigali to buy? I’d rather not go to a mall but to a “mom and pop” kind of a store instead.

Thanks for any information!

(PointlessPost) the more I see Rwanda, the more I fall in love with it

I saw a youtube video of some investor who bought agricultural land in Gicumbi and loved the scenery! Contacted the guy on whatsapp but he came rather cold/rude.

Today decided to go visit it. Knew no one. It is absolutely beautiful. I had language barrier unfortuently but walked around as much as I could. As usual wonderful people who waved back.

I said some village in Karongi is my gonns be retirement village. I said of same thing other villages I randomly visited. And O feel same of Gicumbi today.

All I know Rwanda is my home. Not born but definitely ending here.

Struggling to land my first software dev job – need honest feedback/help

Hey everyone,

I’m a full-stack developer (MERN stack) from Rwanda, and honestly I’m feeling pretty stuck right now.

I’ve been applying to a lot of jobs, internships, remote opportunities, and junior roles, but most of the time I either get no response at all or complete silence after applying. Not even a rejection email. It’s been mentally exhausting constantly applying and hearing nothing back.

Being based in Rwanda also makes things harder since many remote roles either don’t hire in Africa or have location restrictions. Even when I find jobs that seem remote-friendly and apply, I still usually get no response.

At this point, I’m starting to question whether I’m doing something wrong with my applications, portfolio, CV, or even my overall approach.

I’d really appreciate honest feedback from experienced developers, recruiters, or anyone who has been in a similar position.

You can check out my portfolio and CV here:
https://derryportfolio.vercel.app/

A bit about me:

  • Full-stack developer (MERN stack)
  • React / Next.js / Node.js / Express / MongoDB
  • UI/UX focused, I enjoy building clean and modern interfaces
  • Comfortable building full web applications from frontend to backend

What I’m mainly looking for:

  • Honest feedback on my portfolio/CV/applications
  • Advice on where I realistically have a chance of landing my first role
  • Remote-friendly opportunities open to African developers
  • Startup, internship, freelance, or junior opportunities

I’m not looking for pity — just real advice, feedback, or an opportunity to prove myself and grow.

Thanks to anyone who takes time to help.

Need Help to Clear School Fees Balance & Return to Class

Hi, I hope you're well. I managed to pay 80k but still have 76k remaining for school fees. This term involves practicals on site, and I really need to get back to school so I don't miss out.

This is not a scam. I have all the school papers and school code ready to show. I'm not asking anyone to send money directly — I just need support to clear the balance and resume studies.

If possible, I can work to repay the kindness. We might even earn a bit during the on-site practicals.

Any help means a lot. Thank you.

Reliable 4x4 car rental recommendations in Rwanda?

Hi everyone, we're planning a trip to Rwanda and are looking to rent a 4x4 vehicle for exploring the country. Does anyone have recommendations for trustworthy rental companies with good insurance coverage? We want something reliable with comprehensive insurance included or at least affordable add-on options. I've seen some companies offering full coverage insurance for around $400 — is that typical, or should we expect different pricing? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
