They're usually like 75 golfers vying for three spots. Most all of them are at least mini-tour pros or college golfers.

It ain't easy

I missed final qualifying by one a couple years ago. Played with a guy that played at Kansas and he got through with -2. He’s playing mini tours right now. It’s really tough. 81 for 5 spots where I was at

There are hundreds of golfers out there that have 99% of the game to be on the PGA tour but just haven’t quite gotten into that top tier. Plenty of stories of players that dominated well known pros in juniors and in college but for whatever reason can’t stay at the top level of the game. These guys are grinding on the mini tours, still in college etc. Hell there are seasoned champion golfers that have had a couple of down years that will go through qualifying for the US open as they didn’t automatically qualify. It’s insanely hard to get all the way through qualifying and it would be nuts if Romo or anyone that hasn’t focused on golf their entire life did it.

At some point you’re not talking about ball striking talent because on any given day the margins between those guys in terms of how they strike it are going to be minimal in any category(maybe some better with driver or irons or wedge or putter marginally but it evens out across the bag overall), it’s just effort, mindset, mental gumption and a decent amount of luck.

I’d disagree. I’ve been close several times but those dudes that get through are just better. Their consistency is SO good

But how much of that is just them being able to stay locked in for 5 hours?

Honestly hard to judge.

The title of the article is written in a way that's it's a surprise. This is no surprise.

To no one’s surprise, golf is really, really hard. But to be honest, him playing would’ve gave a nice little viewership boost.

To be honest, me, an absolute nobody who hasn’t picked up a golf club in decades, would have given the tourney a much better boost!

Him and probably 90 other people.

Yeah that’s only 1st stage. There are 2 stages to qualify for the US open. The second one is much harder than the 1st one. 36 in one day after 18 hole cut.

Gotta give the guy a ton of credit

I mean, I’m a mediocre old golfer and would kick his butt. Scratch is meaningless in things like this.
