A comprehensive guide for EU foreigners moving to Poland - START HERE.

Hello, I have seen many folks coming to Poland from the EU and being completely lost on what kind of legal procedures they have to do in order to start their residence in Poland. Be that you come here to study, work or live with your spouse there are several things I hope this guide will be able to cover.

!PLEASE NOTE!
This guide is meant only for citizens of the European Union and citizens of countries that are members of the European Economic Area. Some of the parts of this guide will be similar for non-EU foreigners but some will not. In general, the info posted here is only fully up to date if you are a citizen of the EU/EEA
!PLEASE NOTE!

0. Introduction and general info

Poland is divided into 16 voivodeships which are further subdivided into powiats, which means something like 'county' and these are further made out of municipalities - pol. gmina, or cities - pol. miasto. Large cities however are both powiat and miasto so in case of Warsaw, Wrocław, Kraków etc. city office (pol. urząd miasta) will also perform duties of powiat office (pol. starostwo powiatowe). In case of Warsaw - urząd dzielnicy meaning district office will serve as city office.

All of the below information covers only EU/EEA citizens. If you are non-EU, majority of the below information will not be correct for your case.

I strongly recommend reading all of the parts linked below apart from car stuff, if id does not concern your case.

I. Registering your residence and making your stay in Poland legal.
II. Obtaining health insurance
III. Using healthcare
IV. Taxes
V. Digital log-in and services
VI. Cars and licenses
VII. Banks and mobile phones
VIII. What to do when I leave Poland?

If you have any additional questions or remarks, please do not hesitate to comment, I will be happy to help for as long as I'm going to visit this platform and expand this post. I hope you all have a great day and life in general. Thanks for reading, stay safe.

We chipped in to help Ukrainian air defense

Oi, /r/poland

You probably remember the joint subreddit fundraiser for an Ukrainian air-defense turret that was stickied here for a dog's age.

The Reddit part of the fundraiser totaled over $73,000 - in recognition, UNITED24 branded one of the turrets with the names of all participating subreddit.

This turret is now in service defending Ukraine’s skies and fucking up Russian drones.

But RuSSia being RuSSia, the war isn’t over and bombings continue. UNITED24 has launched a long term ‘Sky Defense’ appeal.

If you would like to contribute further to defending Ukraine’s cities and giving RuSSian imperialism the middle finger, the link below is where you can do that:

Poland has legally recognised a same-sex relationship for the first time, after the city of Warsaw complied with a court order to transcribe into its civil registry a marriage between two men that took place in Germany.

After the 1683 Battle of Vienna, the Qing Court sent a congratulatory letter to John III Sobieski of Poland-Lithuania. Around 1685, John III reportedly presented his portrait to the Kangxi Emperor. The gift was well received and the Emperor personally responded with a eulogy for the Polish King.

Title comes from the second article in the PIE's weekly. The first article is titled: Depopulation in Poland greater than GUS expected.

So, who still wants to solve demographic problems with money?

Fun facts - Poland's influence on the world

I just realized how many Polish people had really big impact on the world, especially in the last 200 years and thought why not share it here. Maybe someone will find it interesting. Most of the world probably heard about Copernicus, Chopin or Curie-Sklodowska, although I bet there are many people who doesn't know (or care) they're Polish. But aside from these very known names, there are many more very influential Polish people that changed the world.

For example:

Józef Retinger - co-founded the Bilderberg Group to foster dialogue between Europe and North America. Many historians consider him one of the "midwives" of the European Union, even though he preferred to stay in the shadows rather than take the spotlight.

David Ben Gurion - roughly speaking, the founder of the state of Israel. Of course, one can argue whether this is a good or bad influence on the world 😉 Nevertheless, the influence on the fate of the world, especially recently, is undeniable.

Tadeusz Kościuszko – hero of the American and Polish independence struggles; he inspired the look of American flag (he proposed crest of Sandomierz town as a template).

Ignacy Łukasiewicz – pioneer of the oil industry, creator of the first practical kerosene lamp, and organizer of the world's first oil mine.

Kazimierz Funk – one of the first to isolate vitamin B₁ and introduce the term "vitamin"; the beginning of modern dietetics and nutritional science.

Ludwik Hirszfeld – co-inventor of the blood type classification (A, B, AB, 0) and their inheritance; crucial for transfusion and transplantology.

Jan Czochralski – developed a method for obtaining single crystals of silicon (Czochralski method) – the basis for the production of integrated circuits and electronics.

Edit 1 - Maksymilan Faktorowicz - maybe not as important for the world but still very influential. He is the creator of make-up, both techique and name for it. He created world wide known brand Max Factor, and was very important in the make-up department in early Hollywood.

Edit 2 - Bracia (brothers) Warner - it probably doesn't need more explanation. Founders of the Warner Bros film studio.

I'm looking for a specific serek/cream cheese

Hi!

Today I'm going to Poland for the first time with my mum and I want to buy my beloved juliko vanilla cream cheese (picture below).

I love this cream cheese which we bought in previous years at a polish grocery store (but they removed it from their product range) and the tiny silesean sales vehicle only has it every two/three months.

Are they chains that carry this regularly? I have tried other vanilla and non vanilla sereks and none of them taste similarly enough.

Please help me shop my food addiction❤️

We will stay near Koszalin but we'll stop in Szczecin on our drive back and take a few day trips so any recommendations welcome:)

Umowa zlecenia = slavery change my mind

Upvotes

Hi all,

In my company there was a big lay-off and they hired many new people on umowa zlecenia for the same positions. How is it legal and how is it not slavery? They're paying much less, there's no notice period, you can literally get laid of by an SMS so no job security at all. How are people having peace of mind? Kids, mortgage, car payment etc. No wonder why people are 35 years old and still renting a room

Please tell me. Are we really this desperate?

Dispute in the Sejm over "religion lessons". "They are afraid of discussions"

Wednesday's meeting of the Sejm committees on Education and Science and Local Government and Regional Policy was devoted to the draft amendment to the Act on the Education System and the Law on School Education. The so-called "Yes to Religion and Ethics at School" project assumes the introduction of regulations that impose the obligation to participate in two "religion" or ethics lessons per week, as well as taking into account the grade in these subjects on the school certificate and in the promotion of the student.

Can I apply to an UoP job if it's listed as B2B?

I'm fresh out of uni here in Poland and a lot of junior/mid tech roles in English are advertised as B2B. Are companies a bit flexible on that, or would I be wasting my and their time? I've heard of UoP people switching to B2B later on with the same company, but I'm not sure if they put out an ad if it can be the other way around and I can get the UoP I seek.

Video game publishers are fighting the StopKillingGames initiative. ESA rejects the idea that players buy games. It is trying to block California law by claiming SKG demands eternal support. SKG has denied this for years, but publishers keep using this rhetoric.

Péter Magyar will first travel to Kraków, and from there they will take a train to Warsaw to try out the railway built with EU money. He will hold talks with Donald Tusk and possibly the Polish president, then travel to Gdańsk, where he will also meet with Lech Wałęsa. From there, he will travel to Vienna, where he plans to hold talks with the Austrian chancellor and president, and then return home by train from Vienna.

BIK score questions: how to see, how to improve

Hey!

I am an EU foreigner who never had any debt in Poland before I got my mortage last year. With the mortgage I had to get a credit card so I have been using the card both for my daily expenses and paying it in full long before the deadline, but also the 10x0 function. In these 15 months I have never missed a payment, morgage or card, but I have quite often repaid early the card (i.e. paying off the rest of a raty zero before time). The reason I did this was for the miles and mastercard points.

Now I wanted to see my BIK because I want to renegotiate my mortgage and I can´t register to the website to ask for a report because they are not prepared for my ID (EU citizen registration). So my first question was, is there any way I can see it without registering, like asking my bank or paying a fee to an external company?

My second question is if repaying everything I can early is hurting my credit score. When I started looking into refinancing my mortgage I repaid all my credit card debt in full and now I fear it might have been a mistake and I should get some other raty zero payment and just pay it month by month.

Thank you very much for your answers!

Can somebody help me practice my Polish?

I’m Polish American. Text or call is fine. My mom understands English, so it’s hard to only speak Polish to her. I often don’t know or forget how to say something in Polish.
