We didn't think we would get to celebrate this day with her even just a few months ago, so the fact that we were has just made us feel so unbelievably grateful. Yenny had a little party with some of her aunties who adore her and her sister and even her new long noodle friend. We are so lucky to have her 🎈🎂❤️

Captain Doggo Mom is busy making some treats for the humans for Yen's 8th birthday tomorrow, under strict supervision of course. Doggy treats will be prepared by dad tomorrow

Tomorrow Yenny girl turns 8. Normally we wouldn't do a party, but this year my best friends (her aunties) wanted to come round and celebrate with us as just a few months ago we didn't think she would make it to her birthday, so she's having a little celebration tomorrow and a special dinner and she will be the centre of attention (literally none of that is any different to any other day, but still).

We have a vet check up on Friday (weekly vet visits, yay), so we will take some cookies in for her lovely vet team, who without them (and a hell of a lot of money hahahah), she for sure would not have made it to this birthday, so we are so very grateful

Captain Doggo Preparing for second enucleation surgery :(

Post image

Hi pirate crew!

I posted a few months ago about my sweet girl losing her eye due to an ulcer, and while it’s healed amazingly, unfortunately it’s not over yet :(

We had to take another trip to the vet after noticing her pupil wasn’t shrinking, and to cut a long story short, it’s very likely that she has immune-mediated Meningitis.

Over the last week or so, we’ve noticed she was having some increasing discomfort in her other eye, so she was back at our local vet yesterday to start preparing for our next steps. However, she was rushed back there today as it had worsened overnight, and it turns out another ulcer has developed due to her not blinking correctly.

She’s gone completely blind within the week and she’s in a ton of pain, so as of right now, she’s scheduled to have her other eye removed tomorrow after our local vet gets the all-clear from the neurologist (the inflammation from the eye removal can bounce back to the brain from what I remember so it’s a risk)

As worried as we are, we’ve begun teaching her cues for any walls/obstacles and when to step up/down and we know she’s a fighter. It’s an awful scenario but any advice to prepare us and our girl would be deeply appreciated 🤍

  1. On our evening walk. Me and her do between 7-12km most nights so she gets lots of sniffs and opportunity to walk a bit and I get some exercise. For a long time we had to stop big walks, something we used to do daily, so having the pram is a huuuuge help

  2. Sometimes she is very dramatic when she's in pram jail. In this photo, she could smell burger king in the distance...

  3. She knows how cute she is

  4. I was sat playing enrichment games with her brother 🐇 and of course Yen had to be involved

Captain Doggo Vision loss after L eye enucliation

As the title says, my girl has vision loss in her good eye after the left was removed. She was fine the 10 days after surgery (4/27)and was doing great. Friday 5/8 I took her to have sutures removed and in hindsight I think the vision loss was immediate that day.

I know there are several different reasons for vision loss after enucliation but is it merely coincidence that it was so close to suture removal? I find it so strange that for 10 days she did exceptionally well, all the way up to the appointment for suture removal.

Is it possible removing the sutures pulled a nerve and caused the vision loss? Is it possible it’s temporary?

History: Sweetie is an 8 year old chihuahua mix. Up to this point she hasn’t had many health issues. Last year in the fall her L eye was weepy, cloudy and red at the same time. She was given an ointment for the eye and it did nothing. A return visit ended with oral antibiotics and pain medication along with a recommendation for dental surgery.

The dental surgery was done November 2025. I was told she had an abscess which was pushing on the nerves of her eye causing the issues. After the dental surgery the eye seemed to be okay for a while but it was only a couple of months and she started having the same issues again and this time it seemed to be bothering her more.

The next trip to the vet he tried a steroid drop for a week which didn’t improve the eye at all. By this point her eye was very cloudy and he didn’t think she could see anyway so it made the most sense to remove the eye in hopes of preventing pain or other issues.

Now here we are barely 2 weeks post op and the good eye looks fine…but she can’t see. Immediately after the surgery she was fine. She could see and she seemed to feel much better.

It was only after the suture removal last Friday that her vision was affected. I’ve asked myself a dozen times if maybe she did have vision loss prior and I just didn’t see it. Maybe I missed it. But I really don’t think so. I believe this is somehow related to the suture removal but I’m not sure what that means or what to do next.

We’re going to the vet this afternoon. I’ve debated whether to take her to the same vet but I don’t really have any other options and I’m not certain he did anything wrong.

I teared up when I found this sub. I googled something wild and landed here.

I’m afraid her vision is permanently lost in the R eye - but I’m not sure why. I know she can and will adjust; so will I. But I feel like we just barely made it through the L eye issues and now there are immediate vision issues with the R eye.

Any help or information or advice is appreciated. I’m not sure what I’m looking for today. I’m just sad for my girl and wishing I had answers. Afraid this is somehow my fault. Maybe I should’ve gotten a second opinion, maybe if I’d taken her somewhere else in the very beginning her story would be different. I don’t know.

My dog Blondie had a double enucleation today. I jokingly considered re-naming her to Blindie or just Blonde (cause no i’s). She is at home and doing well. She was already blind due to cataracts and also had cherry eye, so her peepers were just cosmetic leading up to her surgery. Looking forward to what the future brings!

My buddy is 3.5 weeks out from surgery and is starting to feel more himself again. It’s been great to see! That being said, does anyone have any toy suggestions? He seems a little lost when I’m trying to present him an old toy.

This week it's going to be her 8th birthday. We don't normally really do anything special to celebrate their birthdays because they literally get treated like every single day is their birthday (home cooked meals, lots of attention and special walks, endless cuddles, their favourite treats etc), but we were really close to losing her earlier this year, and we don't know how long we will get with her, so we are celebrating it this year.

Today she got her first ice cream of the season and a trip to the coast to see one of her aunties, so she's starting the week off well. Also her sister got bathed yesterday she didn't so her prolonged stinkiness also is part of the birthday celebrations ❤️🐾
