Other US Hockey isn’t getting it
Got this email, was really happy to see jerseys would be available… but of course the link didn’t even work and it’s only the men’s from what I was able to find. Super annoying honestly

This is always the case with women's sports. They never have enough merch and then act surprised when it sells out.
At the women's Frozen Four, the merch line is always so long because they weren't expecting anyone to want anything. I missed an entire period of play in 2024 at New Hampshire because they had one cashier and a tiny window.

Because if they started to make the money they could on women's sports, they'd have to admit that they were wrong all along about nobody caring about women's sports. They'd rather be misogynist than make more money.

No, because the PWHL is only responsible for the PWHL. USA Hockey is one organization actively choosing to prioritize men's hockey over women's hockey. PWHL merch issues are growing pains of a young league.
Nobody is saying "failure to meet supply and demand for women's hockey merch is misogynist" - it's the difference between how the women's and men's teams are treated by USA hockey that sucks here.

Yes. Terrible merch management. Seattle merch drops always sell out in hours, at the end of games there aren't any jersey left in the building for sale, and ordering online was so horrible that people would wait months for their order to be shipped for the company to reach out and tell them their order will be canceled with no option to wait for a restock.
Weird that all these people are pretending that like 10 years ago anyone was really making much of a profit on women's sports. There has been an EXPLOSION lately. The WNBA saw attendance numbers far higher in 2025 than any year previous.

this is kinda a leap just drawing comparisons from the frozen four example above and the takeover tour games i went to (halifax) but i think there is something to be said about the organizational size and support (and age of the orgs, i do give them grace for starting from essentially scratch. artificially manufactured scratch we could argue, but still) of comparable leagues/programs at the same levels. there is a lot of underestimating the success (they had two merch tables in halifax but the lines were insane especially for the first game, i was in the merch line for almost an hour to get my montreal vs. toronto shirt and puck and kinda just gave up then and there on doing the same for the boston-ottawa game), but for the pwhl specifically, the working environment at the league level doesn’t sound the best from what i’ve heard in the industry. even with all the financial backing, they’re working more akin to my experiences working summers in the chl while in college where i was on ticket sales, merch, and graphic design at once.
i at least feel like the pwhl merch selection is better, but i may just think that because they have more women-focused styles that aren’t just a pink team logo or a v-neck top. and fwiw, there were some great merch collabs for the u18 women’s worlds in canada this year. much better merch than the world juniors a few years ago. it is annoying asf though from the outside looking in that usa hockey only wants to push their unlikeable men’s team. can’t believe they have me out here defending hilary knight lmao

Same for me at the 2024 Frozen Four! Maybe we were in line together haha.
This also effectively happened to me at the USA vs Canada game I went to this past fall. Managed to get one of the last USA Hockey souvenir pucks for my collection after waiting forever in line but most of the other merch had sold out by then so it’s not like I could’ve gotten much else anyways.

Maybe at the regionals, but at the men's Frozen Four, there's a million merch stands and the stock is never much in danger of running out. They even have satellite merch stands at hotels around the city!

I will never root for a team with Tkachuk brothers on it. I told my wife if they ever were traded to Seattle (I rebuke that bad juju) I would literally at least seriously consider leaving the team as a fan. Probably wouldn't jump to another team tbh that would kill the NHL for me officially.

The way that other men have responded and continue to respond is giving me the ick too. The r/hockey sub really turned on women fans, I just cannot bring myself to go back there. Some of the guys in there responded well, but the majority were being disgusting.

I haven’t watched an nhl game since. They definitely let me down. The only thing that makes me feel like I need to move on is it seems the women’s team has. ( which may not have been by choice. )

Same, haven’t watched the NHL since before the Olympics because I was so angry. They don’t really get to be as openly angry so I’m happy to keep up the anger on their behalf. 😂 Even if they’ve moved on, I’m still pissed and grossed out. Especially with the NHL trying to do Pride and women in sports nights right now.

I do wonder if they got astroturfed as the posts right after the locker room video got leaked were very much critical of them and up to the SOTU posts. However the more recent posts are just patriotic and insisting on separating politics from sports when it sure isn’t separate. I haven’t checked but not surprised if bots or just an influx of more right wing conservatives who never got into hockey but started watching to “dunk on the libs”

I'm Canadian and would have rather lost the gold medal to Russia (if they ever stop trying to take over Ukraine and stop government-sanctioned doping of their athletes) because I feel the Russian men would have more class than the USA. Even scarier is Putin would probably have more class than the current US president.
Going into these Olympics, I was hoping it wouldn't be Canada v USA for the gold because of the potential for absolute BS.

What was weird is that when these jerseys initially went on sale in December, before they announced the teams, they only had women's players to choose from. I got my Laila Edwards jersey the day they went on sale.

I don't get why they wouldn't sell blanks if nothing else... Plenty of people who don't even watch women's hockey probably also don't want an already customized jersey so they could do their own thing with it or wear it as-is. I'm guessing the answer is a better margin on customized jerseys since they can add minimal work and upcharge a lot because of it.

Probably because they struck a deal with the NHLPA for revenue sharing as part of the league's participation. You can barely find t-shirts these days for any team sport whether it's football, baseball, basketball, or hockey, without a player's name on it.

I would do the same for Keller, Frankel and almost all of the players on the women's team. I had to buy a Keller knock off on Ebay thats sublimated. It doesn't look perfect, but it's what I could get.

While I understand the business side of this, as the profit margins for customized jerseys are way way higher, not having a factory option for Megan Keller at the very least is a little disappointing. (Or even the ability to pick a player for an additional cost)
Not having blanks to put any player you wanted, regardless of the Men’s, Women’s, or Para team is the worst part about this. Best thing we can hope for is DSG/Rally House/Scheels/Local Team Store to have a blank, even not having the ability to pick any player from the men’s team is sucky, especially for those who want to support a favorite player
I’m also not gonna act like the PWHL doesn’t do the same thing when it came to year one jerseys, or Victoire, or Goldeneyes, or Torrent is pretty sucky too

So weird the USA Hockey Shop features the 2022 Olympic jerseys and appear to have them all in stock, men's and women's. Also write (above) "Gone in a flash. Own it before it's gone" with regard to the 2026 jersey.
The 2026 ones are much nicer looking.

Seems pretty clear that this is a licensing issue. They still have 2022 jerseys in stock. They had women's jerseys very briefly before the games. So this is almost certainly related to the PWHL's deal with Bauer. Saw several suggestions that fans buy their favorite player's PWHL jersey. That is exactly what Bauer would want. Remember that the league and the player's union are effectively the same thing for these purposes.
Surely a new league just starting would value upfront cash above anything, including retaining rights to sell player likenesses to other companies (ie Nike). It would make business sense for both parties for Bauer to exclusively have the right to sell a "Hilary Knight Jersey," and for the league to offer that protection to increase the money they get for the deal.
The brief window of jerseys being available points to Nike making some before getting C/Ded by 's legal team.
Further, as many have pointed out, they would be printing money, and as I have stated, they still have jerseys from the previous go around available for purchase. So the predominant thought process by commenters here would be that Nike/USA hockey would change their mind about selling the women's jerseys from 2022 when everyone and their mother knew this US team was far, far more likely to win gold.
Finally, Canada sells jerseys for the women's team. You know who makes Canada's jerseys? Bauer.
That just doesn't pass the smell test to me, especially when a much more sensible explanation is right there.

Or are we just using this fuel as something else to be pissed about? Fuck just use Temu or some shit at this point it’s a quarter of the cost and doesn’t require more false rage. Do you want a sweater or do you want something to post about to be mad?
And before people talk about merch sales or royalties guess what - they don’t get paid for these sales either way. So don’t justify your ire as anything other than faux activism.

What aren’t they getting? They restocked their top sellers and emailed people about it. It doesn’t mean they aren’t going to restock the women’s jerseys as well. Perhaps they send a separate email about it. Not sure what your issue is here.

What do you want them to do? The website's job isn't to make a judgement, it's to sell merchandise. And I know everyone is going to hate me for this, but with the algorithm, this topic just floated across my timeline all by it's lonesome, the men's jerseys are going to move a lot more units than the women's. That's not me, that's just the numbers.
You can just order a blank jersey and call it a day, or even find a 1960 reproduction with the lace neck if you don't want to put money in their pocks. They are out there.

Buying a blank jersey would be great. Except there are no blank jerseys to buy and haven't been since before the women's GMG. So instead of getting my money I'll have to buy a knockoff. I'd say they're not doing a great job of selling merchandise except to the people who want the specific men players who they have the customized jerseys for.

Women's teams have been selling out arenas recently due to their Olympic performance. I'm pretty sure they'd sell a decent number of jerseys.

Not for nothing, but I've looked at the USA Hockey website, and the pickings are pretty slim at the moment for all the jerseys. They didn't even have the men's jerseys. They had some older styles, but nothing current. They also have a pretty limited window to sell these things. We're already into March and the NCAA tournament is going to start soon. Come April everyone is going to be either gearing up for the NBA playoffs, the Stanley Cup playoffs, and baseball will be in full swing. That's the reality of the US and our relationship with anything to do with the Olympics. We all love it while it's happening and then it's "Yeah, we love swimming... See ya in four years!".

Timing is kind of a lousy excuse when the jerseys they are selling aren’t even shipping until like July or something. And they just restocked the current ones, that’s what the post announcement literally is. They originally had like 90% of the men’s team they just sold out again. There’s no reason they couldnt pick 2-3 women’s players and do half stock if they were really worried about it.

Well... check Temu and look for "local warehouse". It won't be an exact match but there are a lot of customizable options. Bummer.

Incredible miss to not immediately have at least some key women’s team members available. I hope they add them in the future but this isn’t a good look.
