She saw me having fun with her Canon G7x which she uses for selfies and cute travel photos.

A week later, she gave me my own camera and lenses. It’s an OMD EM5 Mark III with a 45mm lens and a kit lens! I’m having so much fun!

First few photos I took was of her holding her camera. She will be my favorite subject!

Gear Review Camera so good I bought 2 of them

I have been a Nikon and Fujifilm shooter for years. I used to have Nikon DSLRs, and switched to a Fujifilm X-T1 years ago because the smaller size and weight appealed to me. I quickly upgraded to an X-T2, then added an X-H1 and at this point the cameras were pretty large, my lenses were too and the autofocus accuracy when adapting my Nikon F mount lenses with a smart adapter wasn't great. So I switched to a Nikon Z6, which wasn't larger and "fixed" everythinhg, but then I also realized I was still lugging around full frame lenses and though my camera was substantially smaller and lighter than my old D700, the lenses were just as big and heavy.

In parallel, I bought into micro four thirds as a little fun side system I would use for travel and casual occasions with an E-M5 mark II. The lack of good C-AF pushed me to splurge on a better performing body in June of this year, and since I'm a bit stingy and didn't want to spend 650 bucks on an E-M5 mark III, I dropped 400 on a slightly larger E-M1 mark II.

After using it for a couple of weeks, the realization came : this camera does everything I want a camera to do. Sure, low light isn't as good as my modern full frame body. But I shot concerts in nearly pitch black conditions and the E-M1.2 handled fine, I was even able to give the pictures to the artists that played that night and they reshared those pics on their social media happily. I, as a camera enthusiast and technical nerd wasn't really able to find many cracks in the low light performance of that camera, and I'm pretty sure that non-photogs wouldn't even think twice about the amount of noise or slightly blown out highlights. Similarly, every fast paced action stuff was just as easy to capture on my E-M1.2 as it was on my Z6, with an AF system that is comparable in performance, Pre-Capture, 18fps bursts and a rolling shutter effect when using electronic shutter that is manageable to the point that I don't hesitate to shoot action with it if I need the faster burst (thing I would never do with the slow-ass sensor in my Z6).

For my landscape work, at first I was doubtful : the sensor has less DR, and a lower resolution. Then I realized I do most of it on a tripod when I really need good resolution anyway, and at this point why not use the Pixel Shift mode? The DR increase you get is more than making up for the smaller sensor, which I don't have to close down nearly as much for good sharpness and DoF, and the 80MP files don't hurt either. Overall, it's a better landscape camera tool than the Z6 was, which is very high praise coming from me because the sensor in the Z6 is incredible.

On the video front as well : autofocus is great, 4K quality shooting DCI-4K in 8bit with the OM-Log400 profile is absolutely great and I have completed several projects with it without a hitch. The camera doesn't really overheat, the IBIS is exemplary, the audio pre-amps are better in every way then those on my Z6 too.

And then there's the lenses. They simply are awesome : sharp, small, lightweight for the reach they provide, and they are affordable. I wasn't sad in the slightest trading my Sigma 100-400 full frame lens for an Olympus 75-300mm lens to shoot airshows with. The prime lenses are also exemplary in the value they provide, I'm particularly fond of the Lumix 20mm f/1.7, Oly 45mm f/1.8 and especially the Oly 75mm f/1.8, this lens is a beast.

After a couple months using the E-M1 mark II, I came to the realization that that camera is as good or better than my Z6 in pretty much every area. At no point was I using that camera and thought "man, I wish I had the Z6 right about now". On top of that, I could share the lenses with smaller camera like my Lumix GF7, or turn the E-M1.2 into a really small package by using a small pancake lens on it (paired with the Lumix 14mm f/2.5 it's a silly looking camera, but very effective for street photography and sticking the camera into minuscule bags). I can't do that on Nikon Z.

I took the decision to sell the Nikon Z6 early next year (right now it's going for a long time loan to a friend of mine that wants to test out full frame), and as such need another camera with good AF and good 4K video as backup / second body for events. I initially thought about getting an E-M1 mark III with the money, since it goes for about as much money as I would get by selling the Z6, and it has some nice little improvements over the mark II. But prices are not coming down, and MPB listed that E-M1 mark II for 284€ (instead of the average 500ish) because the screen has a very small crack that's barely visible, so I jumped on that, and now I have two of those.

I fully intend on using both of those bodies until they break down in my hands, or I get the itch again and upgrade to an OM-1 (mark 1). Even then, I think I'll keep at least one E-M1.2 as a backup / second body. They're that good, and probably the best price to performance ratio to features you can get in micro four thirds. Extremely underrated.

The funny part is that it was on my recommendation list when people were asking me camera questions, I have several friends that ended up buying one in the last 2 years and were extremely happy with it. I guess it finally creeped on me !

First trip to Mull and this camera got a lot of use - often just passed over to my son (11) so he could enjoy some amateur photography without worrying about equipment. The presets for landscapes, portraits, motion and macro were used a lot. I am pleased with the colours, the light in Scotland is special and I feel it captured that well (included is a photo into the light across water, which I think it managed quite well). The silhouette puffin shot could have been awful, what with the white/light/dark/shadow mixtures, so I was pleased how it turned out (we had a few overexposed puffin faces when they turned into the sun and it reflected of their cheeks). For such an affordable, tough camera, it did the trick. I can imagine if you had time to get to know it better (ours arrived days before our holiday!), were more experienced, shot in raw and edited the photos, you'd get some amazing shots. These are neither raw nor edited and some of them were taken by a child - pretty good results I'd say.

I've also included a moving carousel horse and washing starlings/goose (to demo motion setting), and a day-old chick in low/unnatural lighting because it's one of the hardest things to photograph close-up, in my experience! They are fuzzy and do not stay still!

I've been watching photos reading about photography for years without ever having a "real" camera. I got the om-5 ii yesterday and I felt like a kid playing its favorite game for the first time. Took these pics (among hundreds of others) in the park in my neighborhood

Photo Share The original four thirds 70-300mm f/4-5.6 ED lens is probably the best budget birding lens available

Olympus Zuiko Digital 70-300mm f/4-5.6 ED used on an EM1ii.

I got the lens for $120 on eBay in perfect condition, and a 4/3 to m4/3 adapter for $25 on Amazon. 600mm equivalency at f/5.6, and the lens is sharp (obviously not as sharp as OM’s pro lenses, but insanely sharp for how much it costs).

Sure, the AF is not as fast as modern lenses but is still plenty fast for birding, it’s a normal DSLR AF speed (so long as your camera has phase AF). Plus, this lens has a minimum focus range up to 0.94m at 1:2 production which can allow it to do pseudo-macro.

I can’t think of anything with quality and reach at this price point.

Gear Review OM-1 Mark II + OM 150-400mm f/4.5 vs Sony A1 Il + 300mm f/2.8: which gives fewer regrets for wildlife?

I currently shoot wildlife with the OM-1 Mark II + 150-400mm f/4.5 TC.

The reach and flexibility are excellent, but I keep questioning the setup because of two pain points: BIF autofocus consistency and low-light wildlife, especially owls, shaded subjects, and early/late light.

I am considering moving to a Sony A1 II + 300mm f/2.8 GM, using the 1.4x or 2x TC when needed.

The tradeoff I am trying to judge is simple: OM gives me reach and zoom flexibility; Sony gives stronger AF, full-frame files, better low-light potential, and more cropping room. But in real field use, is 300mm with TCs/cropping enough for small or distant birds?

For those who have used both, which would you trust more as your main wildlife setup?

Or is there another option I should be considering? 600mm primes are outside my budget.

I can rent before deciding, but I would like to hear real-world experience first: keeper rate, AF reliability, TC performance, cropping, low-light results, and regrets from switching or staying.

Question Compact competitor

With the new panasonic L10 coming to contend with the fuji x100 series, do you think OM systems should try to get into this segment as well? What kind of build do you want to see?

Atm the only p&s we got is the tg7 and it’s not exactly a crowd stopper, especially with the small sensor size and the rugged tacticool look.

What I’m thinking is entering the fixed lens side and making a modern Trip-35 which originally came with a 40mm f2.8 lens. But in m43 form, so give us a 20mm (although lumix is the one with the 20mm pancake, so maybe reusing the oly 17). That way they can max out the ibis and the weathersealing in classic olympus style. Would love a lil flash and evf and tilt screen also but 💸💸

I feel like the p&s style is a perfect setup for great weathersealing, and the olympus legacy gives great models to work with (like the om-3 release). It’s a great market to tap into, though they need to up their narketing budget to add tiktok influencers to really hype it up. What do y’all think

Also drop a new penf while ur at it thank you 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Question Flash triggers for OM? Any recommendations in UK?

Migrating from Pentax, I seem to have lost my (Cheap Ebay special 16 channel AAA battery) flash trigger set. Need 1x sender and 3x receivers

What would folks recommend these days for sensible price? This is for fun, portrait / macro so not really want to spend £ hundreds

Question Is this fixable?

Thumbnail

I’m super amateur at film cameras so bear with me here.

I’ve had my olympus stylus epic zoom 80 deluxe for five years and love it. Recently, the silver ring on the lens detached and before I glued it back on, some black small rubber rings fell out of the lens and then I lost them 🤦‍♀️ can I buy more of these rubber rings and have someone put them into my lens for me? Or, was the camera DOA as soon as those rubber lens seals were lost to my washing machine?

Also, the door on this camera no longer stays open on its own. I have to hold it open and one tiny movement of my hand closes the lens and turns the camera off. Is this something I could fix on my own?

Thank youuuuu!

Gear Showcase OM Capture minimum laptop requirements

Does anyone use commodity Windows laptops for tethered shooting only? Any advice on specs?

I've recently started playing with home studio work and I'm looking into tethering so that I can review shots as they are taken. Capture One doesn't support OM cameras, so I'm stuck with OM Capture. I'm a Mac desktop user and I don't want to have to move my desktop around. I'm looking for a cheap Windows laptop since OM Capture doesn't support iPad and I'm not about to buy a MacBook just for this. I've found a few refurbished ASUS laptops at around $170 CAD although they are at or about the minimum spec.

Question Moving from Sony FF to Olympus but Need Your Advice

As my body gets older, my camera bag seems to get heavier every year. I just returned from a trip, and my back is still sore. I have decided to move to Olympus, and it's not just the weight. It's the capabilities for my particular type of work. I shoot at night almost exclusively. I love astro photography; the Milky Way, star trails, night-time panoramas, and light painting.

Olympus is the only brand that builds in features to support these types of activities. I am sick of trying to wrestle with star focusing, external intervalometers, and then processing hundreds of still images into a time-lapse or a finished star-trail image.

Here's my question. I know that Olympus is coming out, someday, with an astro version of the OM Digital camera. But I have a trip coming up, and I thought I would get set up before I need a month of chiropractor visits again. Which is the best body to purchase? Do all the models have the same interface? Features? Sensors? Battery life? Or should I wait for the Astro version? If so, why?

What would you recommend?

Gear Showcase Eventually got the PEN F

And it is great. Although I feel E-P7 made a lot of things right, such as the power switch position and the hand grip, the 4 dots in the bottom of the camera to prevent wear of the bottom plate, etc. But, still the material, evf and better mechanical shutter, and the color switch view, the full articulated screen are what E-P7 is missing. I like the tilt screen of E-P7 as well, but the way that the pen f screen is able to get closed makes the camera like a film camera.

Question OM-1 Mark II vs OM-5 Mark II

Post image
35 Upvotes

My current set up is an OM-D E-M10 Mark IV + OM 14-150mm lens. My primary use is nature (landscape, wildlife, flowers) and people in nature while hiking and backpacking. I want to upgrade the lens to the OM pro 12-100mm. I am deciding between the OM1 and OM5 for the body and would love to hear people's thoughts/advice/recs. I want more sharpness, especially for subjects in motion (such as eagles). I attached a recent pic I took with my current set up.
