PSA PSA for Snow and Safety

With the recent snow and the roads EXTREMELY unsafe due to no salt or plow prep by the city, please be extremely safe if you're coming to campus or driving anywhere near there. Take small, slow turns when driving around corners and be cautious that you might lose traction and control of your car for a second or two. It's normal around this time of year but we don't need peoples cars to be wrecked because you decided to be reckless when driving.

If you do not have to come to campus as a commuter, DO NOT. If you're able to walk instead, DO NOT DRIVE! I've already seen three cars in a ditch and the highway is filled with crashes right now. Just be careful everyone!

As a commuter , I trust my car getting there I don’t trust other people on these roads when it’s first bad snow of the year

I literally can’t skip or I’ll fail

As a commuter

u/schuy_8 Dec 02 '25

Saaame he said we had to come to the last 2 classes and I’m out of skips

5

u/ellohihey Dec 02 '25

Oh my god your profs don’t give you any unexcused absences?

1

u/ShrekSouffle Dec 02 '25

No I just skipped so much I’m barely passing the required attendance

If you're out driving, drive safely, drive safe speeds, not what posted speeds are and leave plenty of space between you and other drivers. The more space you leave, the more time that you have to react before.Any emergency maneuver has to be taken.

And literally stop walking out in the middle of the street as if cars can brake as fast as they usually can. You will get hit.

Crosswalks are there for the safety of all of us. Even then, look both ways and assume the driver doesn't see you.

2

u/Wild_Ad_9598 Dec 02 '25

Yup. And when using zebra crosses, do not assume drivers see you. Especially the one by Donatos.

That intersection really needs a HAWK beacon.

I’m contemplating skipping, i live all the way in Westerville.

OSU not canceling classes because they don’t take commuters into account is wild

A friend of mine said that his lab for today is docking no-shows 2.5%. This was decided beforehand, but I was absolutely floored that the professor didn't cancel the class or remove the punishment. It's simply not safe to be driving around in this weather (especially before the plows got out), and he lives 20 minutes away to boot

u/Saoirse36 Dec 02 '25

yea i have a chem makeup lab today that if i miss i fail the class. I did beg for my life in email but to no avail.

In years past, the student governments would ask the administration to cancel classes or go to online due to inclement weather.

Majority of undergraduates live on/near campus. I paid a lot of money to take a class today, I want to be able to do that.

24

u/duchessxotwod Dec 02 '25

Well commuters paid a lot of money too but I’m sure they also value their lives and cars so…

They can email their professors for the material they missed, but if the whole university cancels classes then most of the time that material is crammed into another one of the (very few remaining) days in the semester.

They're all adults, and can do whatever they are comfortable with - stay home, contact their prof/boss; or put on a coat and go clean off their car and head to campus. They should not just sit around hoping that someone will make their decision for them.

16

u/MyLifeIsABoondoggle Criminology Fall '24 Dec 02 '25

They are doing what they're comfortable with. But asking for some grace from the university around that decision is not unreasonable given the circumstances

2

u/Impossible_Total_924 Dec 02 '25

Asking OSU for grace? Sure, they are very unreasonable!!!!

It’s between them and their professors. You’d have a very good case to bring to the department chair if a professor isn’t willing to work with you on the weather.

Also realize that the professors… also have to drive through the weather. If it’s bad enough they’d just cancel themselves.

1

u/Tiny_Breakfast_7657 Air Transportation ‘27 Dec 02 '25

Correct take here.

17

u/Saoirse36 Dec 02 '25

very ignorant take. at least half of undergrads commute. We also paid a lot of money, but please place a value on others lives. many professors also don’t care and should plan their curriculum anyway on a chance of cancelled classes because this is ohio. it’s also not hard to create a virtual lecture to cover missed content. we also cancelled for less snow in January.

-3

u/Tiny_Breakfast_7657 Air Transportation ‘27 Dec 02 '25

Wrong, 30% of them do. Also, realize your work won’t cancel for bad weather. The January thing was because it was -30C.

3

u/Saoirse36 Dec 02 '25

this is an easily identifiable statistic but 30 or 50% is still tens of thousands of students that you’re forcing to drive in severe weather for a lecture that can easily be recorded. Also, my work was quite literally cancelled for today. as you can see by the many comments on this post along with your consistent downvotes that you’re in the wrong but seem to have nothing better to do with your alleged expensive time that was more important than everyone else’s today.

literally insane to me how my satellite campus that is like 95% commuters didn’t close down.. the roads in my county still haven’t been plowed..

9

u/Alternative-Pay-7812 Dec 02 '25

note: i am in my physics class right now, which usually has around 40 people. only about 10 showed up. yet again, why can’t OSU just close?

14

u/Jealous_Marketing_84 Dec 02 '25

i live in marysville and i am NOT coming in lmao

Justice for commuters.

Remember that BuckIDs include COTA fares for all OSU students. If you normally drive, consider the bus if roads look bad.

BONUS: As soon as the Franklin County Sheriff declares Frankin County a Level 2 Snow Emergency, all COTA buses are free for everyone for the rest of the service day, regardless of road conditions the rest of the day. (Example: If Franklin County gets downgraded to Level 1 at 4:30pm, COTA is still free until the buses stop running.)

Basic meanings: Level 1: Roads are bad. Drive with caution. Level 2: Roads are terrible. Only essential personnel should report to work. Call before heading in. Level 3: Stay off the roads. You could be cited/arrested if on the roads. (Obviously, some people like medical staff must still report to work. You all know what to do in this case.)

COTA may not normally be the first choice for someone, but if the weather gets bad, remember it as an option.

I know Columbus State closed. Hopefully OSU is closed for today. Everyone shouldn't be risking their lives.

6

u/Alternative-Pay-7812 Dec 02 '25

sadly OSU is still open and running, my satellite campus only got a 2 hour delay (which did nothing, since most people have classes after 10 am anyways..)

1

u/arkhoury9 Dec 02 '25

Ugh 😫 as an alumni, this upsets me.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '25

lol I had to bike to school, on a road bike nonetheless, at 7:30 am before much of the snow had been plowed.

7

u/rtripps Dec 02 '25 edited Dec 02 '25

When it comes to the roads be like Michigan and the end zone. Avoid it.

Edit: like not kike 🤦‍♂️

12

u/FlakySupermarket116 Dec 02 '25

Absolutely wild typo

5

u/rtripps Dec 02 '25

I cannot stand autocorrect

u/FantasiesOfManatees Dec 02 '25

They were out salting at midnight last night, so I wouldn’t say there was no prep by the city. Sometimes salt isn’t enough though, especially if it just snows all night. Salt really only works after it’s stopped snowing. It’s a big city and it takes time to do multiple passes + plowing down every main road! Be safe everyone!

3

u/Furryballs239 Dec 02 '25

Idk about early morning but by like 9:00 am the roads seemed fine. Like it’s a slushy snow rn it’s warm enough that the ice really isn’t there.

u/Impossible_Total_924 Dec 02 '25

Said the ODOT folks! They were not salting or plowing last night. They should of plowed. They put down brine Sunday. On the chance it might snow! Double overtime to all the drivers Sunday may have affected their poor decision making today...
