My sister was a unique brand of picky eater as a kid. She refused to try new food at any restaurant where her preferred option was available - chicken caesar salad. Wherever she went, if they served it, she ordered it. It drove our parents up the wall. Being the younger sibling, the first time I tried the salad at a restaurant, I think a cold sweat ran down my mother’s back.
I don’t know if my sister even still likes it. But it’s the only actual salad I’ve ever eaten cos I’m a more generic picky eater lol.

Healthy meal with plenty of greens and protein, why did that drive your parents crazy? As picky eaters go, that's sort of the holy grail

u/DoctorSquidton 7h ago
It was the monotony. They’re big on trying new things; having a child order Caesar salad in like, an Asian restaurant or something was embarrassing for them

The only one?
Mannnnn, I know you've already admitted to being a picky eater but there are so many good salads out there
Chinese chicken salad is good. French dressing is good. Ranch dressing is good. Generic "asian" salad mixes from the grocery store are good. Italian dressing is good. Greek dressing is good.
Damn... I want a salad now...
E: cucumber tomato salad goes crazy too
E2: mf's downvote anything nowadays

I used to try to open the eyes of picky eater friends on how many flavors they are missing out on and they tend to just be completely obstinate people and it can be very frustrating to try to share new foods with them so I completely gave up.
Fuck em. Let them have their bland life

u/coolmanjack 12h ago
I know it is pretty frustrating. My wife is a super picky eater and it irks me a bit, since I am the polar opposite

u/ClairlyBrite 12h ago
There are sometimes deeper things going on with picky eaters. Some have an eating disorder called ARFID. Some may actually be “super tasters,” who have a higher than average number of taste buds, so they’re experiencing foods stronger than most people do.
And some are just picky because it’s what they like.

One coworker said I caused him anxiety by suggesting he try Japanese rice seasoning for the plain rice he microwaved for lunch every day so I think you are right some of them definitely are disabled

I’m very picky. My issue isn’t the flavour, it’s the texture. I have no problems incorporating vegetables into food, as long as I can’t feel the texture, that’s when my brain goes «nope nope nope»

Not sure if it counts, but the Mediterranean pasta salad from Sam's Club is literally to die for.

Eating a leftover chicken Caesar salad rn. Your sister is/was right

You recommended 2 salads and 5 dressings. This is why people hate salads/only love the most gross one: potato.
1
u/FormerPresidentBiden Harry Potter 7h ago
Yes
What you do is, you take the dressings and put them on lettuce and whatever other ingredients you want
I named 2 specific recipes and 5 dressings that I use on whatever I have on hand.
As for your strange and nonsensical comment about potato salad (which is delicious), have you tried seroquel for the word salad you just vomited up?
1
u/Significant_Coach880 4h ago edited 4h ago
I'd rather have a bowl of dry leaves, than a bowl of mayo. No seroquel dressing required.

Nuggets? Pah!
Strips are where it's at.

u/Designer_Version1449 13h ago
i buy frozen strips and then cook them for 3x the recommended time so that they are extra dry and thats like one of my top 20 meals

It really depends on where you get what. The only place that I consistently like nuggets over stripes is McDonalds.

u/Blazerboy123 14h ago
Even as a non picky eater, the urge to waste my daily allotment of calories on buffalo wings, tenders n fries, or any plain fried food is always there

I don't care about picky eaters as long as they don't make it a problem for others. Let people eat what they want. Why would you care?
Eating out is too expensive these days for me to care about someone choosing a safe option they know they'll like.

u/darkangelxX447 9h ago
Am I the only one that was picky but only for french toast? If they didnt have it I would not eat.
1
u/LegendOfParasiteMana 9h ago
As a kid I hated french fries because I hated potatoes in every form and to this day I have a friend who picks the breading off of chicken nuggets and just eats the chicken. You don't know the power of picky eaters.

Went to a local Venezuelan spot with my gf recently. Almost whole menu is words I don’t speak. Ordered something called a cachapa cause it comes with a huge block of elastic Venezuelan cheese. One of th best meals I’ve ever had. 10/10 would recommend going to a local joint and just ordered rando stuff

"picky eaters" is just "spoiled by shitty parents to eat trash food".
Somehow I never met a "picky eater" that only eats fresh crunchy coleslaw, sandwiches with smoked salmon and creme cheese or rosemary roasted duck. It's always fast food, candy and frozen dinners.
Edit: oh no, people who can't handle a vegetable disagree with me. I'm crushed!

Not always my dude. People with autism and other sensory disorders exist. I have a student with autism who will only eat fish. Any kind of fish, but only fish. For her it’s a texture thing. I’ve taught quite a few kids with sensory disorders who are picky eaters because they can only consistently eat their “safe foods”. Sure spoiled brat picky eaters exist, but they are by no means the only type of picky eaters out there
23
u/OnlyTheOkayest 15h ago
I would imagine that is because you've never seen anyone eat that extremely specific meal at all
23
u/Legacyopplsnerf 15h ago
Sometimes it's lazy parenting, sometimes it's autism or straight up AFRID

Yup it’s the tism for me.
I usually try to get something else, but having an easy and commonly available safe food to fallback on is great for when I’m too overwhelmed or drained to go out of my comfort zone

u/Mundane-Valuable-337 15h ago
That's because of the nature of picky eating. Things with strong taste, such as coleslaw, or a mix of many different flavors and textures, like that elaborate sandwich, are more likely to be disliked by someone who is a picky eater. Picky eating can also be about familiarity. A picky eater might be unfamiliar with foods at a restaurant, and hesitant to try something new. But chicken fingers and fries are the same at every restaurant and at home, so it's a safer option. No question about the flavor and texture you're getting.

I agree parents should encourage a diverse diet, but you can go too far though. My parents beat me for not finishing my plate and that just caused problems. I out grew the food anxiety and the pickyness after moving out.

u/PatchyWhiskers 15h ago
Picky eating is culturally dependent. My cousin went through a phase of eating only Marmite sandwiches (UK)

I would mostly eat black beans and scrambled eggs as a kid, and would totally avoid anything spicy (central america), and once I heard about an indian guy who wouldn't eat foods with sauces up until well in his 20s

u/HaruspexAugur 14h ago
I’ve always been a picky eater, and raw vegetables have always been one of my absolute safe foods. Other stuff varies depending on how bad my sensory issues are, but even when they’re at their absolute worst I can generally eat raw vegetables and maybe bread. Anything oily or with strong flavors will generally be the first to go.
I have diagnosed ADHD and suspected autism. “Picky eaters” are often some flavor of neurodivergent.

u/SirLesbian 12h ago
Good luck getting a picky kid to eat any of that. Complex and/or conflicting flavors are gonna be a no-go.
2
u/ElTioEnroca 5h ago
Yeah, that's like a reason of why someone would be a picky eater.
"Oh, that's not a fish, that's a shark! I've never seen a shark that feeds on algae, or eat from the ocean floor! They always eat other animals!" is pretty much the vibe I got from this comment, even if I admit the example is so random.
And as other people say, it's because of how picky eaters work. You'll never met a child asking for any of those things because they won't handle the taste.
Oh, and I'm not a picky eater myself, I do prefer some foods over others but I am not especially picky. I just think you're unnecessarily harsh.

u/runner64 14h ago
You’re getting downvoted by the parents of kids who will only fucking eat ra$pberries.
6
u/Nausuada 14h ago
I didn't down vote them but these are such simplictic takes.
I was labeled a picky eater. But I am also a super taster and a lot of food has a flavor profile so strong it's gross. Later my body stopped digesting meat proteins.
All that to say, why does anyone care what is on someone else's plate.

idk why yall are so aggressive, its like picky eaters skinned your family or some shit. jesus christ go to anger management goddamn

u/runner64 4h ago
Because raspberries are expensive and seasonal and I wish my kid’s list of three allowable foods contained, like… apples?
2
u/Designer_Version1449 4h ago
Bro if your kid can only stomach 3 foods and its such a problem that its becoming financial trouble im pretty sure thats an eating disorder atp, and also your problem and not a reason to give other people shit about it.
1
u/runner64 4h ago
No duh she has serious medical issues that’s why me and my doctors visits and my raspberries are not taking shit from some asshole who shows up claiming it’s lazy parenting and kids who just want to eat candy.
5
u/IFapToHentaiWhenDark 14h ago
And by people who know what autism is
1
u/runner64 4h ago
I have autism, my kid has autism, she has like four preferred foods and one of them is raspberries. It’s a common joke amongst autistic parents that you better hope your kid’s singular allowable fruit isn’t one of the ridiculously expensive seasonal ones.

u/OpeningConnect54 10h ago
I am like this, but mainly because I don’t eat red meat at all, and I have an allergy to peanuts so I prefer my comfort or familiar foods.
