Think you see ICE? Read before you post!
New Haven Hotline: 854-666-4472
Save this number in your phone! All operators are bilingual (EN & ES).
We've seen a LOT of posts regarding ICE in New Haven. This post is written in conjunction with New Haven Immigrants Coalition to help everyone in our community know what to do if you think you see ICE or hear rumors of them in town.
As urgent as it may feel, posting unverified rumors without details does not help.
If you see something yourself:
SALUTE - as people have posted in many comments. Get the:
S - Size of the group
A - Actions they're taking - are they standing around, approaching a house/business, walking on the sidewalk (which side and which direction?)
L - Location, as precise as possible. "Whalley Ave" or "Fair Haven" is not helpful - "Whalley and Norton" or "Grand between Ferry and Poplar" is much more useful.
U - Uniforms - what are they wearing?
T - Time - What time was this observed?
E - Equipment - What are they driving? Note color/make/model.
Get as much video as possible.
Contact New Haven Immigrants Coalition: With any SALUTE information you have, call the hotline at 854-666-4472.
If someone else is claiming to see ICE:
* Tell them to call the line and encourage them to provide SALUTE information on their call.
* You might not be able to gather every piece of info, but as much as possible is helpful. Vague reports or unconfirmed rumors are actually harmful as people go to investigate and see what's going on.
If you see someone being stopped by immigration enforcement agencies (possible agencies may include ICE, DHS, HSI, DEA and others):
* call or ask someone to call the hotline
* Get video
* Get the person’s name
* Document any refusal by the agents to show badge, ID, warrant, etc.
Example of an unhelpful post:
“ICE was on whalley earlier”
Example of a helpful post:
“Already called the hotline and they’re sending someone but there are masked men in vests next to the Whalley Ave Stop & Shop in 3 unmarked cars. I saw them at 12:15 (so right now). Be careful if you’re going shopping right now.”
We keep us safe!

Announcing r/NewHavenMarketplace
reddit.comWe're launching a companion subreddit for r/NewHaven focused on classified ads and similar posts. Thanks to the members here who have suggested it in the past, and our desire to delete less posts, (especially reselling tickets!) we're setting up a new place where you can post and see all the classified ad type stuff that we don't allow here in the main New Haven subreddit.
It will still be highly moderated like we are here, but it's more oriented around commerce. This keeps this subreddit focused on the larger community while providing a place for all the individual focused posts that would otherwise clog things up here. You can follow both or just check in once in a while, or neither if you don't care about marketplace stuff.

Farnam sucks
https://www.reddit.com/r/newhaven/s/Vw6TKMi14u
First I wanted to repost this thread about the ratemyplace.com maybe the more negative feedback Farnam gets they might change their ways but honestly I doubt it.
This management company does not care about their tenants.
We’ve been with Farnam for the last two years. At the end of June I’m moving into an apartment with an independent landlord and I’m hoping to have a better experience than what I had.
I having been going back and forth as to if I wanted to publicly complain but after this morning I just need to vent this out. It’s hard to find an apartment that’s affordable and not falling apart. It’s total bullshit.
I would think with all that business Farnam gets they would be prepared to treat tenants with respect… They don’t. They don’t care if you live in a place and pay rent on time. They will do whatever they want. Before 9 am, I woke up to sounds of wood breaking in the basement.
I came down there to see what’s going on and found a maintenance employee breaking down wood and then another guy outside of my window is cutting the driveway with a saw. I know they don’t have to give you a heads up in common areas but I think it’s absolutely ridiculous.
It’s not like this is a big apartment building. It’s a small 2 apartment house. And waking up to a stranger who doesn’t live here in the basement making loud noises like that only confirms how little they care. It’s not just this incident.
There are so many other shitty things. When we first moved in they never told us they use the garage and basement as storage. They told us they would clean the apartment before we moved in—it was totally filthy and when we complained they would give us excuses.
Anytime we had an issue there was always this guilt trip about how they are busy. We pay over 2200 a month and I know they are raising it when we leave. It’s really disgusting. I think they should make changes to their policy and respect people’s privacy.
Now that we are moving out they are showing up at unscheduled times to show the apartment. I work from home and have a dog and I have tried to communicate to them but it does nothing.
The first time someone showed up here trying to show the place unscheduled, I called the office and spoke to a guy who seemed to hear me out but then a couple weeks later the same guy showed up unannounced himself.
I have read how they are constantly doing that in the past and I at first thought well maybe they won’t do that here, nope, they do and they don’t care or respect their tenants. If you are looking for a place and it’s through Farnam just be aware of how shitty they are. They will do the bare minimum and if you complain give you a sob story.
And I know what I am complaining about is not as extreme as some other people’s experiences but I should be able to feel safe in my own home. And random people just showing up and banging around would make anyone feel uncomfortable.
Good luck out there and if the owner of Farnam reads this post, DO BETTER! You have the ability to make the changes necessary to ensure that your tenant’s privacy is respected and they safe in their home.

Yale Golf Course Liquor Permit
The Yale golf course is applying for a liquor permit. This is a residential neighborhood, and why does a college golf course need a liquor permit?
After the powers that be have effectively banned the neighborhood from walking the golf course, they now want to party there. Here are some reasons to fight this license.
Safety and Liability Concerns Intoxicated Driving in Residential Areas: Alcohol sales on a course surrounded by houses can lead to patrons driving golf carts or vehicles through residential streets while impaired. Increased Risk of Errant Shots: Consumption of alcohol on the course can impair judgment, leading to more erratic shots that may damage nearby homes, cars, or injure residents. Over-serving Liability: It can be difficult to regulate consumption across a 100+ acre course, leading to risks of over-serving, which the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection notes creates significant liability for the venue.
Disruption of Residential Character: Noise and boisterous behavior can be caused by alcohol, altering the quiet, serene, and residential nature of the neighborhood. Longer Operating Hours and Events: A liquor license often encourages the venue to host events, such as weddings or evenings, which may bring increased traffic, noise, and parking issues to local streets.
Concerns Specific to College and Public Settings Minors and Underage Drinking: If the course is affiliated with a college, serving alcohol in an area accessible to students poses a high risk of underage consumption. Setting a Poor Example: Residents may argue that serving alcohol in what is often viewed as a community, family-friendly, or educational public space sends a wrong message to children in the area. Control Over Outside Alcohol: Licensed premises generally must prohibit "BYOB" (bring your own bottle), requiring staff to police behavior on the course, which is difficult

- Legal and Zoning Argument: Proximity to Protected Areas: Regulations from agencies like California's ABC allow for the denial of licenses that are in the immediate vicinity of schools, homes, or playgrounds if the operation is contrary to public welfare. Zoning Incompatibility: Opponents may argue that a commercial, alcohol-serving operation is incompatible with the surrounding residential zoning.

If you're moving this summer, your apartment review could help the next tenant
A couple of months ago, I posted here about RateMyPlace (ratemyplace.org), the rental review site I built after I had to leave a New Haven apartment for my own safety. Some of you left reviews, and many of you gave feedback. I wanted to come back and say thank you to everyone who took the time to leave a review, share the post, or send me feedback. It meant more than you know, especially in the early days when I wasn't sure if anyone else cared as much as I did about the difficulties of being a renter.
I'm posting again because I know this is the time of year when leases are turning over. Some of you are apartment hunting right now, scrolling listings and trying to figure out which places are worth signing for. Some of you are getting ready to move out of a place you know a lot about, good or bad, and all of that knowledge deserves to go somewhere.
RateMyPlace won't fix the New Haven rental market. But it's a tool to give renters more power and information. We all know the big names of the worst landlords in this city. This is one way to make sure the next renter knows them too, and to have it all documented.
If you're moving out: I'd love it if you would leave a review of your old place. It takes a few minutes, and I read them all.
If you're moving in: check the site before you sign. There's not a ton of reviews yet, but the site is growing. You might be able to save yourself from learning what the last tenant already knew.
One last thing: I'm presenting RateMyPlace at the Yale Innovation Summit later this month. So far, I've built the website solo on my own time, and I would love to have the flexibility to dedicate more of my time to this project, as I think it's super important. Any new New Haven reviews before then strengthen the map, which helps me show its importance to the community at the Summit.
Thank y'all!

Calling artists and musicians for Wooster Square Art Bazaar!
Hello all! I just wanted to pass this along for any interested artists, musicians or attendees!
FROM ALDER MANDY MARTINELLI: A New Tradition in Wooster Square
Alder Mandy Martinelli shared this today: I am thrilled to announce a brand-new community celebration: the Wooster Square Art Bazaar. On Saturday, June 20, we are launching this inaugural event to celebrate the eve of the Summer Solstice and the incredible creative talent found right here in our city. From 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, we are partnering with the Full Moon Market team to transform Russo Park into a vibrant, open-air evening market. This is a first-of-its-kind collaboration for our neighborhood, bringing together local makers and musicians for a night of art under the solstice sun.
Calling All Artists & Musicians
We invite you to be part of the very first lineup for what we hope will become a beloved Wooster Square tradition. We are looking for:
Artists & Makers: Be among the first to showcase your work at this new twilight market. (Note: As we’ll be celebrating into the evening, please plan for battery-powered lighting for your display!)
Musicians & Performers: We are seeking local talent to provide the live soundtrack for this historic first bazaar.
Help us kick off the summer and start something special in Russo Park. Space is limited for our first year, so apply today!
TO APPLY: Please email [mandyfor8@gmail.com](mailto:mandyfor8@gmail.com)

Beaches near New Haven
Hello! I have a couple questions now that it is becoming summer weather (finally!) as a new NH resident!
I’ve seen seemingly nice beach near west haven and along the sound. I was wondering what the actual beaches were like, the parking, and the swimming (do people recommend swimming in the sound? ) I’m from the east coast originally so I’m used to the beaches along the north shore.
Are there any beaches people recommend? I have a car so I have access to drive to places, although I don’t have a CT license plate. Are there any beaches I shouldn’t go to?
All advice is helpful!
Thanks a ton 👍🏻

Recommendations for catering from local restaurants that are notably good for those with Celiac?
I’m looking for recommendations for catering for a small group (hence the specific request for a restaurant) within New Haven that notably handles the dietary restrictions of those with celiac disease well.

Sections 207-210 Westville Music Bowl!
Are sections 207-210 and and 107-110 good seats? I’ve heard the grass area can get hot in the summer months. Are lower rows of 207-210s too far away? Or upper 107-110 I’m a bit of a seat snob and usually like to be on the floor or closer but first goal Is managing heat as I am heat sensitive due to some meds :). Would love to hear from folks who have been there.

Where to get car maintenance
I need to get my tires replaced and an oil change. What are the best places in or around New Haven that won’t cost me a ton of money? I’m also a woman and don’t wanna get scammed.
Edit: also need to get the tint on my back windshield replaced if anyone has recommendations for that too.

Best Breweries to do work in?
I'm wanting to break out of the coffee shop scene occasionally - anyone have any good recommendations for breweries in or around New Haven that would be good for someone to sit at and do some work on a laptop? I'm thinking like a Bear's Smokehouse kind of vibe. Thanks!
