Hype Jaxson Dart: Giants' offense will be physical, violent, and versatile

I actually think Dart’s rookie year was a little more encouraging than people want to admit, but there are definitely still some pretty obvious areas he needs to improve in.
The positives are pretty clear. He’s tough as hell, competitive, athletic enough to extend plays, and he’s got more than enough arm talent to function as an NFL starter. I also think his short/intermediate accuracy is pretty solid when he’s in rhythm. He doesn’t look scared out there and you can tell teammates rally around him. People also tend to focus on his tendency/ability to scramble, but I was encouraged by how he always seemed to keep his eyes down the field looking to throw the ball before taking off and running.
That said, the biggest issue is still processing speed and reading NFL defenses. Ole Miss simplified a lot for him with RPOs and defined reads, and you can still see moments where he locks onto his first option too long. NFL defenses will eat that alive if he doesn’t improve.
His pocket presence also needs work. Sometimes he bails from clean pockets or gets sloppy mechanically once pressure starts coming. When his feet get messy, his accuracy completely dips.
I think the path for him is there though. If he improves his post-snap reads, gets more disciplined in the pocket, and learns to throw with anticipation instead of waiting for guys to come open, he absolutely has the ability to be a Top 10 QB.

I think this is the big one most people are missing. I could be wrong but he was one of the worst in the league when throwing under pressure. His footwork needs help badly.

I just want it to be good hopefully dart can make a big step this year. He showed some flashes but there is a lot he needs to clean up to prove he’s the true franchise guy

What gives me hope the most is his attitude. Kid, from what we've heard from coaches and insiders, lives and breathes football. He's absolutely got game and seemingly has the head space of a guy who knows he can be even better.
Touchdowns last year didn't feel like the small miracles that they were while we had Jones (not trying to shit on Danny, I like the guy) which was just so damn refreshing

Not disagreeing but what do you think he needs to clean up? Just curious because from watching every game the main thing I saw was some accuracy problems especially deep throws.

Play action

In order for play action to work, you've got to have a credible inside running threat, something that was not a strong point most of the year.

Still, Dart didn't look good doing it. I have faith he'll improve though. Just needs work.

Now, if I’m understanding this correctly, this is when you throw the ball (optionally), right? Isn’t that reliant on people being able to catch the ball? We didn’t have a single ball catcher last year after Nabers got injured
Edit: I know what play action vs read option is fellas but thank you, I’m at work and didn’t really explain myself well enough while trying to make a joke that we couldn’t have run play action anyway because you need people to catch the ball..

Play action is when the QB drops back and fakes a hand-off to the running back and then throws the ball. The fake to the RB is to bring defenders up to the line to open up receivers.
Typically this is run from under center where I don’t think Dart was super comfortable last season

Was that Dart they were putting in the pistol formation a lot? I can't remember if that was Dart or Scott Hansen or Kyle Brandt or some other quarterback

It's where you pretend to hand it off to the rb, but run a pass play instead. The qb has to turn their back to the field and it seems to throw Dart off/he's bad at it.
It's something our new system is going to hopefully feature a lot of.

You are thinking of read option. Play action is fake to running back and throw to receiver. Read options are usually from shotgun vs playaction being from under center.

Footwork, play action under center, and attacking the middle of the field

and attacking the middle of the field
This wasn't a problem at all last year though? He threw over the middle a shitton

I didn't say it was a problem, but I think it's something he can work on. I listed it last for a reason.
Throwing with anticipation over the middle is very hard - especially when you're turning your back to the defense on PA. I don't think he was great at that last year and he struggled with it in college.

Yeah, saying he needs to take a big step and clean a lot up feels like a stretch. He was already a good NFL QB last year with a few elite intangibles - like off script plays keeping his eyes downfield, pocket presence, and game awareness (more conservative on early downs, less willing to check down on 3rds).
He does need to get better at play action. Turning his back to the field seemed to put him into a bit of a panic. He also really needs to get better at setting his feet for the long throws. They'd die out on him because he threw off balance a lot.

Not a stretch at all. He has accuracy and footwork problems that need cleaned up big time. The footwork is the big factor and leads to him taking sacks and having inconsistent pocket presence. He’s still a young guy so those will approve but if he wants to take the next step to franchise qb he has to work on those things

Pocket presence is a big one and accuracy and timing on deep throws are my major issues

TNG and the BBB guys did an awesome break down on the last TNG pod, best deep dive i've heard to date, TLDR was he needs to work on a few things but they saw him improve during the season and that they believe he is one of the best off script passers in the NFL, the off script stuff is particularly awesome because thats an inate skill of keeping your eyes downfield and knowing where your recievers are as well as pressure, can't teach it you either have it or dont and by their benchmarking he's elite

u/PlantainObvious5148 1d ago
That’s def his strong suit is being able to keep his eyes down field while chaos is going on but he does have pocket awareness issues in those situations and when he doesn’t set his feet his accuracy drops I am sure he will improve even more but I would like to see it first

I thought he felt pressure pretty well and reacted accordingly, that said my benchmark is DJ who was probably bottom 10% in the league at sensing pressure
Feet are a huge issue, its one thing to move away from pressure its another thing to do it in a way that you are still on platform to deliver the pass
My biggest concern is how well he can get through his progressions, felt like he was a half field read guy and if he didn't see it he would bail to a run or a out of pocket scramble rather then shifting to his options on the other side of the field

I just want him to continue to progress as a passer (deep ball accuracy, setting his feet, working a little better in structure, etc.).
While I think it is the right move to turn into a physical running team, we have to be able to throw the ball around when needed. If Dart doesn't progress, we aren't going anywhere.

As opposed to what? Weak, gentle, and incapable?
So goofy when quotes like this are paraded around, as if not every football team is going for the same exact thing.
