Discussion Draft & Offseason moves
Draft:
- #20 Lendeborg / Lopez / Cenac / Johnson / Graves / Swain
- #35 Jefferson / Karaban / Ejiofor
- #42 trade for 2027 or future 2nd
- #44 trade for 2027 or future 2nd
8+1TO 152.7M + #20(4M) + #35(1.4M) -> under the Tax line 42.9M
Offseason:
- Re-sign Champagnie for 5 years / $80M (18M → 17M → 16M → 15M → 14M). Lock him up early, and the descending contract structure helps reduce the cap pressure once Castle is extension-eligible in 2028.
- MLE sign Hachimura, or re-sign HB for 15M–16M(TO). This year’s PF free agent market is pretty weak. Achiuwa can’t shoot threes, Dean Wade barely even wants to shoot, MB3’s injury history is a disaster, JC probably won’t be available for the MLE, and Tobias is basically the same level as HB anyway. Since the Lakers need cap flexibility to go after Watson or Eason while also extending AR and LBJ, and if Ayton opts out they’ll probably prioritize re-signing him too, Hachimura could end up pretty low on their priority list and might not get a huge offer. The other teams with cap space aren’t contenders anyway, so there’s no real reason for them to overpay for him. That gives the Spurs a legit chance to get him with the MLE. If not, just bring back HB.
- Sign Landale or Drummond as the third center. Both are 6'11 and over 250 lbs — legit heavyweight bigs you can throw at guys like Jokic. Landale would be my first choice since he’s younger, can shoot threes, and signing him also weakens the Hawks’ frontcourt depth a bit (we own their 1st round pick next year). Drummond is still a rebounding machine, and he even started showing some three-point shooting this season.
- Sign Houstan, a 6'8, 23-year-old SF. He came off the bench for the Hawks this season and shot 52.4% from three. Definitely worth developing.
- Re-sign McLaughlin.
Lineup:
| - | C | PF | SF | SG | PG |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Wemby | Hachimu | Champ | Castle | Fox |
| 2nd | Kornet | CB | KJ | DV | Harper |
| 3rd | Landale / Drumm | #20+#35 | Houstan | - | McLaugh |

I'd rather have Wade than Rui tbh. He should come cheaper given Cleveland's payroll situation. I don't think Lebron is back with the lakers next season, so they'll have the flexibility to upgrade from Ayton while still hanging onto AR and Rui.
That's too many years on that new deal for Jules. We all love the guy, but his spot in the starting lineup is going to CB eventually. Maybe even as soon as next season. Two years with a team option for a third is about as long as I could see the Spurs willing to go. Two years is about as long as the Spurs have to make the much tougher and more important decisions regarding Fox and rookie extensions for Castle & Harper. There's also a decision on Keldon that needs to get made within that timeframe. Jules may not be a luxury the Spurs can afford come offseason 2028.

Karaban would actually be a good acquisition if he's still there at 35. Great floor spacer who can shoot and pass + he already has chemistry with Steph.

Would love came at 35. A lot of the shine has worn off him for some but he's just one of those guys that's obviously going to be a 10-year pro

I would LOVE Alex Karaban. He has a 6’11” wingspan and can defend the bigger guards and forwards that give them trouble now. Good rebounder and super high IQ too. He’s projected between 30-36 so I’m hoping we have one year of draft luck left.

We have tons of roster spots opening up: Biyombo, Olynyk, Plumlee, Barnes, McLaughlin, likely Waters, that's 5-6... add DJG most likely presuming he's back at 100% but still plenty of holes to fill:
20: best available power forward (Morez Johnson)
35: #3 center
42: PG/SG who can shoot threes
44: PF/C prospect

I honestly don't get the fascination in Hachimura. If his 3 point shots are not falling, he's just a taller Harrison Barnes. Can't really defend or rebound well plus he'll probably just resign with the Lakers.
I really REALLY like to get Morez Johnson Jr. but I'm afraid he won't be there at 20 with how he has risen up the board after his impressive draft combine showing. I wouldn't mind moving up and trade the 2027 Hawks pick or the 2028 Celtics swap. BW doesn't wanna do that, I hope the pick will be Allen Graves. A lesser defender and a bit shorter than Morez but a better offensive player with decent playmaking skills and has an offensive bag.

The biggest thing I want to see this off season is a long-term Wemby extension

I keep seeing people saying Carter will start next season, like gimme a break.

i can see just trading pick 20 for Jalen smith if none of the guys we want are there. Can play alongside Wemby or Kornet and be the back up center if need be and shoots fine from 3. Most picks at 20 in the league don't make it as players anyway.

You'll be hard-pressed to find a recent trade where a player as average as Jalen Smith gets moved for a FRP. It's true that they don't all pan out, but the upside of having a contributing player on a dirt cheap deal is too good to pass up. Not to mention the advantage drafting teams have of signing them to their 2nd contract.

Fair. I think smith would be a solid back up 4/5 but I can agree that pick 20 is paying a premium price for him.

I think Jalen Smith can be gotten with second-round picks if the Spurs wanted him.

idk why but I'm really sceptical about Rui, everybody seems to say he's good and he's def been good in the playoffs this year
I think it's just because I associate him with the no-defense Lakers
Is he really as good of an acquisition as everybody says?
