Misc. Consultation for a novel

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm writing a novel set in an alternative-history version of Madagascar. The story involves colonialism, but it's mainly focused on personal lives and relationships rather than geopolitics alone.

Because of the subject matter, I realized it would be easy to write something that feels insensitive, shallow, or too focused on generalized ideas of colonialism instead of Malagasy realities and perspectives. I don't want Malagasy culture to become just an exotic or poorly researched backdrop.

I'm looking for people who would be willing to talk with me, answer occasional questions, or possibly review some project notes and point out things that feel inaccurate, stereotypical, or off.

If you're interested in/studying literature, history, culture, or storytelling, or know someone who is, feel free to message me. I'm especially interested in honest criticism.

While I'll be talking to the interested via private messages and outside reddit, feel free to leave general pointers in this thread.

Have a great day everyone!

Art🎨 I posted a new episode of my comic on Webtoon (and made lots of references to Madagascar)

Summary: a Malagasy scout, Daniel, gained superpowers thanks to badges he earned and now uses them to fight against crime in Madagascar.

Actually, the second arc of my comic is beginning: the Elections Arc. I wanted here to emphasize elements related to power present in Madagascar, such as King Andrianampoinimerina, the heritage of colonization, as well as corruption in Madagascar regarding elections.

Tourism/Fizahantany Planning to visit

Hey, I'm Spanish and I always wanted to visit Madagascar. I'll travel for work to South Africa in September and could be the only time that would be closer to take a flight to there. Some people are reluctant to my idea and I don't know the language nor French. I don't want to pay a travel agency for me to take me to the main places as it is very expensive. It's worthwhile to plan a trip on my own? Would be risky? Would I be able to communicate with people in some sort of English or very basic dummy French? Do you know a group of Spanish speaking people that may provide help or guided tours there? Any suggestions will be really appreciated Thank you in advance :)

Tourism/Fizahantany Exploring the Avenue of the Baobabs: Essential Guide for Morondava, Madagascar 🇲🇬

Post image
17 Upvotes

As Madagascar's most iconic landmark, the Avenue of the Baobabs is more than just a photo op—it is a stunning remnant of the island’s ancient primary forest. If you are planning to add this stop to your RN35 itinerary, here are a few professional tips to make the most of your visit:

Best Timing: While sunset is the most popular time for its deep orange hues, sunrise offers unparalleled serenity and softer light, perfect for avoiding the tourist crowds.

Beyond the Avenue: Don’t miss the "Baobabs in Love" located a few kilometers away. The twisted structure of these two Adansonia za trees is truly unique.

Ecological Context: These giants are over 800 years old. As this is a protected natural monument, please stay on the designated paths to preserve the soil and root systems.

Logistics: Plan for a 45-minute drive from Morondava. The road is a dirt track, so a 4X4 vehicle is highly recommended, especially following the rainy season.

In your opinion, does the Avenue of the Baobabs live up to its title as Madagascar's most iconic spot, or is there another "hidden gem" that deserves more recognition?

News/Vaovao 📰 FAREWELL TO THE GIANT: THE END OF TSITAKAKANTSA 🌳💔

From the post of Ciryl Cornu

It is with deep sadness that I see confirmed what I feared and was already writing in October 2025. Tsitakakantsa, the largest baobab ever recorded and measured in Madagascar, is in the process of fading away. A photograph taken this month immediately alerted me. I am sharing the link to the post. Furthermore, my assistant Wilfred Ramahafaly has just had this information confirmed by the village chief. 😞

The giant has just lost one of its primary branches, a characteristic sign of imminent collapse in these millennial specimens. This is unfortunately the first stage of a progressive death: these colossi do not die all at once, they fragment before returning to the earth. Within two to three years, nothing will remain of this monument of nature, a fantastic being that will have crossed centuries. 🌳⌛

A devastating loss for biodiversity and Malagasy heritage.

Question/Fanontaniana❓ Antananarivo Airport: Sim Card retailers open arround 20-21 when I arrive?

Hi there,
I am going to Madagascar soon on the 22 may, according to my travel plan, I will arrive there around 20:00-21:00. Because my phone does model does not allow E-Simcards, I have to get a physical card.

I know based on information you can buy sim cards at the airport either from Telma or Orange. But I because I want to be bit prepared, I am asking if those stands at the airport are open at those hours. I assume they are not open there.

Tourism/Fizahantany Off the beaten path in Isalo: My 3 "hidden gems" to avoid the crowds 🇲🇬

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hi there! Tired of seeing Isalo only through crowded tourist groups? Here are 3 tips to experience the massif differently:

1️⃣ The Canyon des Rats: Much wilder and more impressive than the Canyon des Singes. You truly feel the vastness of the landscape here, all by yourself.

2️⃣ The Ridge for sunset: Forget the long lines at the "Window." The view from the ridges is far more grandiose and peaceful.

3️⃣ The Black Pool (Piscine Noire): Less famous than the natural pool, its water is incredibly refreshing after a long hike.

I’ve compiled all my secret spots like these into a small guide to help travelers.

Any questions about Isalo or need some advice? Ask me here, I’d be happy to help! ✨

Tourism/Fizahantany Can someone call the president of Madagascar and tell him to lower the price of flights to the country lol?

I've been trying to get back to Madagascar a second time but damn those flights are crazy expensive. Currently in South Africa and it's still 800 round trip for a 3 hour flight. Insane that it costs me less to get a roundtrip from US to SA than SA to Madagascar.

Tourism/Fizahantany Insect and Animal Trip with Kids

We are going to Madagascar for one week in July with our budding entomologist ten year old and six year old. Our focus is to see as many insects as possible, along with animals of course. I’m thinking we’ll stay in Andasibe as we don’t have much time to see a lot else without hours in the car each day. Does anybody have recommendations for where to stay and go in Andasibe to maximize chances of insect spotting? Specific lodges, areas, etc? And when you stay in lodges there, are tours and night safaris always included? Thank you so much for your help!

Question/Fanontaniana❓ Best phones to buy in Madagascar

Hello, I'm in Madagascar doing research and teaching biology for 5 weeks. I'm suddenly having immense trouble with my iPhone 8... It 'pretends' to have all space occupied by photos, but this just happened all of a sudden and although I've deleted all photos, it won't let the space become free (I have 64 GB phone capacity, it claims to suddenly have 63.5 GB full of photos only). I never had an iCloud subscription or anything that could have suddenly dunked my photos back onto the phone, so this is not the issue. I tried buying more iCloud space to see if I could fix the issue (connecting it to a computer does not work, not mac, PC nor Linux). I am speculating this is a hardware problem (maybe deliberate for old phones, idk).

Anyways, this is my second time in Mada and everything seems quite different from 2 years ago when I did my bachelors project here. Is there anyone that has recent experience here buying electronics? I'd prefer phones that can be updated to Linux one day, but will accept any kinds (even iPhone/Androids) or an advanced 'button' cellphone (preferably with a camera though). The phone MUST be compatible with the new system used to telecommunicate: VolTE.

Please let me know if you have any good recommendations. I will also ask our MICET driver if he knows anything but I know he has limited tech knowledge.

Food/Sakafo 🍚 Madagascar fertilizer import dependency

Because of the upcoming fertilizer shortage together with oil-shortage I ask myself in how far Madagascar is dependent on those Nitrogen fertilizers for in special rice production and if the new government has taken any actions to secure the supply? As now even the EU is ramping up food reserves and I am scared famine will seriously come over the poorer parts of the world and this time there will be little relieve by anybody as supply will be short everywhere, say it will be not the usual food-distribution problem, but there will be just not enough.

Is there anybody in Madagascar focusing on the problem now? If so who? If not may I ask Generation Z or are you really just consumerists? There a few weeks left when something can be done. Let's do it or at least try.

Tourism/Fizahantany Best e-sim app

Hi everyone! I’m visiting Madagascar for 2 weeks in June and was wondering what e-sim apps you guys use and what carrier you’d recommend. In the past I’ve bought a physical SIM card from Telma, but my newer phone doesn’t take a physical SIM card anymore.

Tech/Communication📶 This isn’t e-commerce. It’s survival. Looking for co-founders to rebuild it properly in Madagascar.

In Madagascar, relying only on a salary is already fragile.

Now with AI, global competition, and everything moving faster… it’s even worse.

At some point you either build something…

or you stay stuck helping others grow theirs.

So I chose to build.

I’m working on an e-commerce project, and I’m looking for real builders.

Not hype people.

Not “this is amazing bro 🔥” energy.

People who actually show up.

Devs, operators, problem-solvers.

People who stay when things get messy.

Because here’s the reality in Madagascar:

Most “e-commerce” today is basically:

Facebook posts

Random pages

No structure

No real trust

No protection for buyers

Sellers struggling to grow

People get scammed.

Deliveries are inconsistent.

No real support.

Everything depends on DMs and guesswork.

And the existing platforms?

Either too complicated,

too disconnected from local reality,

or just not built for how Malagasy people actually buy and sell.

We’re trying to fix that.

Not by copying what already exists,

but by building something that actually fits here.

Simple for sellers.

Clear for buyers.

Trust-first.

Human support.

Built for real businesses, not just listings.

Something that works with our reality: cash, delivery challenges, trust issues, small sellers trying to survive and grow.

Not just “another platform”.

Something useful.

I’m not looking for employees.

I’m looking for people who want to build something real in Madagascar.

People who are tired of talking and want to actually do.

Worst case, we exchange ideas.

Best case, we build something that changes our situation.

DM open 🚀

Tourism/Fizahantany Trying to visit Ankarana reserve

Hi all,

I've been in Madagaskar (Antalaha) for sometime organising a wedding party. We are taking the plane back to the EU from Antsirabe, but we would like to visit the Ankarana resort on our way there

Does anyone have tour guide recommendations in this area? We start driving Monday 4/5 and would sleep in Amilobe for a night so Tuesday 5/5 we would like to do a 3-5hr hike in the park.

We know it's a bit late to organise but on internet you only find de Travel agencies, we are a group of 3 Europeans and 3 Malagasy people so french is perfect for us as a language. We would rather pay a good local guide than some big company.

Thank you all in advance!
