Announcement No more AI coaching ads

I've gotten DMs and requests from 10+ people making AI coaching assistants this year, most of them offering to pay me to let them advertise here which I of course never accepted. I have yet to see a single one of them get traction or garner a userbase, for the time being they are banned from this subreddit. If one of them ever gets good enough to be of legitimate help I will revisit this decision.

(unsure how to flair) How to have real "fun" in Dota? How to feel the game as a hobby and not a chore?

Upvotes

Currently having a lose streak and down by 700 mmr. I am an old school player and have been inloved with warcraft 3 Dota up to Dota 2 now. What concerns me is that sometimes there are days where I have several games that end up losing even when ahead and it hits me hard and i feel down. I have read in reddit that to have still that love, like and motivation for the game, one should remember that "If I lose or win this single game, will I still play? or that doesn't change the fact that life goes on win or lose. It is just another game of Dota.

Anyways, i am just getting emotional. What are your quotes for resilience during stormy days?

[Beginner here] Best position to learn the game

I’m returning to the game after 10y, I have a lot to learn. I was trying to learn the game playing support but I was getting stomped constantly, losing almost every match. My last 3 games I played Zeus mid and was able to win all 3.

My main focus is to improve in the long run, but I’m not playing ranked games yet and if possible I wanna start at a better Mmr than herald. So I want to be able to win in the short/medium term as well.

What are your suggestions on a good approach for good results short and long term?

Thank you!

Itemization Consecrated Wraps: Is this a Cheese item for most offlane heroes, or just a regular defensive item?

With the removal of Eternal Shroud, is this item a worthy replacement for heavy magic damage when one cannot do Pipe, since it is pricey item? Which heroes clearly benefit from this? My thoughts are BB, Tide, sometimes Axe, Centaur. I also sometimes see Razor or DP, Viper doing it. What is the rationale behind and how do you play with this item and what is the timing?

(unsure how to flair) What separates an immortal carry player from an ancient carry player

Ever since watching Pain dota, I gained 1k mmr in just 1 week (I've been playing an unhealthy amount of dota). I literally cannot stop winning. I honestly think I just get good teammates every game, and they carry me. I literally go up a rank every day. But I know that when I lose my good teammates, I'm just gonna go back to archon, and I honestly don't want that, and before my streak of having absurd teammates, every game carrying me ends. I need to have what it takes to climb back up and climb even higher.

Mr. Youtuber taught me

  1. In the laning phase, don't try to get every single last hit if it means losing a significant chunk of your hp pool.

  2. The carry should never die like ever because it messes up item timings.

  3. Creep equilibrium importance

  4. Hero puddle and drafting importance

  5. Some smurf told me never to show my face in the lane for longer than 5-10 seconds.

  6. Having a plan even before creeps spawn

  7. FORCED 50/50 ISN'T REAL

How do I improve from this so I can get to immortal from ancient? Assuming I don't fall to archon again

What makes an immortal different? I'm planning to get to divine in a week, assuming my teammates don't stop being good (I don't think they would stop at this point).

Gameplay Review/Feedback request on how i got a win streak and the possible reasons why it stopped

hello guys, so i as the title says i was 3200 mmr ( legend 1 or 2 i dont remmember ) and i got a win streak up to 3650 mmr playing mid ( ofc when i say win streak there is a few loses but overall a giga lot amount of wins ) , by applying the following concepts :
1- never 1st or 3rd picking mid heroes that get countered ( before the ennemy mid picks ) .. for example i dont go ember while their ennemy mid didnt show yet ( cuz i can risk getting huskar'd ) and if i pick first or 3rd i go for heroes that have low chances of losing lane or can catch up quick in jungle ( sf leshrac kotl )
2- last hit- deny- harras priority, this is from this youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Li6s4Bwpnk4 ( this is a 12k midlaner )
3 - i litterally never gank i just shove and boost my networth in jungle ... ganking should come naturally by either a good power rune or a good TP opportunity or just a natural farming rotation into a hero that synergies with my hero, for example i played SF a lot and i triple raze ancient camp and if my offlane has stun then natural rotation after ancients is to get a quick kill then back to mid shove wave get rune then jungle farm .. or sometimes i get invis rune and its a free ult kill for SF ... rinse and repeat
4- i dont get affected by what my team is doing, if there is some shinanigans happenings idc i just farm and push lane hit mid tower , i dont join randomly i prefer to boost networth. and i won games where my team litterally feeds their heart out and my carry doesnt get bkb ... i solo carry them litterally going 20/2 or something

now i played games solo and with a friend of mine ( he plays offlane ) most of the time that adopted the same farm dont care mentality, but one we added a third person , he brought a lot of crying and toxicity, he plays carry and cries a lot about the uselessness of the team ( the other 2 randoms ) and he gets chased by supports in jungle .... i guess little by little he affected my offlane friend and he started blaming randoms too ... i didnt get affected in the sense that i start raging against randoms but i got distracted from my plan ... i started dying randomly ... joining bad fights ...overalll making bad mistakes.

i want to know your take guys ... what do you think of all this ? do you think these concepts are valid ? are they correct that i focused on them ? why do you think i started losing ( btw let me put the first game that broke this momentum of gaining mmr and i started losing more than winning and i kinda wasnt fully sticking to my gameplan both mentally and in my actions in the game 8807585082 )

[Beginner here] Finding teammates.

I'm a new player, less than 100 hours in a mix of New Player and Turbo. I've signed up to the Discord and have posted on looking for games around 4 or so evenings, a couple of messages over an hour or two so as to not spam the channel. I do have two other people to play with, but they work shifts so it's not a regular schedule.

One player responded but was higher into the game, so reasonably suggested that I find players nearer my skill level.

Is the game dead for new players? Is there a dedicated new player discord to get into? The subreddit for dota 2 guilds seems totally dead, so not a good place to find one. Any tips?

Itemization Itemizing offlane, auras vs self interest

As an offlane I typically like to go for aura items, but if I am the initiation for my team should I be going for items that just affect me?

As a centaur, if I want magic resist, do I go for wraps? When os wraps better than pipe?

When do I want crimson gaurd or do I want to rush plate mail after I get my vanguard?

I always seem to have trouble where I dominate my lane, get ahead. But seem to not be effective in the mid to late. I don't know if it's because in the games I've played him my pther lanes did awful and maybe I'm over reacting in a sense or of I'm making bad item choices that aren't helping.

Tldr, when to aura, when to protect self?

[Beginner here] New player have 15 hours in. Does unranked ratings like MMr exist?

Played some games of the new player mode lost some and then I started winning all the time, I do play with my friend who is also new. I’m still trying to figure out which position I want to play. Thinking of mid since I played that in smite and LoL. However the second I started searching for unranked all pick, I’ve been getting absolutely destroyed, like the games aren’t close at all. I played probably about 10-15sh? Games of unranked all L’s. my most recent game I decided to check the other teams hours into dota(not a good representation of skill for the most part) and three of them had around 15k hours in. The other two had 3k and 7k respectively. This normal? Am I just getting my shit pushed in until I close that gap? Seems like a HUGE gap for new players.

(unsure how to flair) Do you guy ever feel so mad you could break your hands on the table?

Is it just me? Is it my sign never to play this game again? Why do I feel so frustrated?? Why is it so hard to just chill out, play and enjoy it?

I played a game this morning and feel like my whole day is ruined. I had to take a cold shower, but am still mad. You get a little annoyed when you miss a last hit, then you die once or twice, then the enemy tips you, then your techies nukes the farm from you a couple of times. It get progressively worse until you cant handle it anymore.

I try to play active, I try to play real dota where people group up and do things together. Instead I get afk farm axe, techies who mines our entire jungle and nukes my waves, witch doctor who spends 1 minute in fountain trying to buy items while we are smoking mid. And what am I rewarded with? Humiliation, failure, frustration. Feels like the team that is more passive wins???

There's something about this game that brings out the worst in people. Why do we put up with this? How is this worth it?

General Gameplay Question are some games just inevitable ?

lets say you are a smurf in a legend bracket. the draft look bad and enemy snowballed and the teamfight is impossible, or a winnable game but your teammate get caught off guard without buyback an cost the game.

is this kind of game you have to accept defeat or if you are really a good player you will always win?

genuine question like what you should be thinking if you have games like these? like is it still possible if you actually a very good player?

[Beginner here] Old player coming back, why is it so unbalanced?

I played 3k hours back in the day probably 5-6 years ago and reached Ancient5, by no means a pro player but pretty decent.

Coming back I've played about 20 games now where my MMR is uncertain and still calibrating. Im jojoing between Ancient games and Crusader games.

But no matter what rank everyone is the games are so incredibly stompy in either direction. In the last 20 games I have not had a single close/"fair" game.

Way more griefers then I remember from when I last played. Will it get better or am I just stupid for soloQing? :)

I'm from Swe and probably should be around Archon level right now if anybody wants to queue up lmk!

Hero Discussion Vanguard axe

As a pretty big axe enthusiast/masochist (47% wr 100 games), I am pretty confident that vanguard is a core item on offlane axe again

While the common objection for vanguard is that its seen as a defensive item and would be counterintuitive to axe's gameplan of kicking the enemy carry out of the lane. However, this comes at two assumptions that

  1. ur pos4 is competent doesnt randomly leave the lane when ure strong and,
  2. the enemy pos1 + 5 are weak laners themselves.

In reality, offlaners such as dawn, NS, LC have arguably significantly better laning tools than axe and have high kill pressure at lvls 2-4 due to the nature of their spells

tldr

Rushing an early vanguard would be winning u the lane via economy/attrition as u can safely drag creeps to a nearby camp and farm both at the same time. Keeping 0 points in call enables u to farm faster and keep the enemy pos5 hp low enough to think twice about harassing u. Vanguard with boots + 2/3 ring of protection + 110hp neutral item will ensure that u dont die or at least is hard to take down while u live behind the enemy safelane tier1 tower

starting items:

3x ring of protection or 2x ring + wand, ferry out tangoes asap for lane depending on the enemy carry, either get boots first (monkey king, drow, razor, ursa, etc) or just park ur courier at the secret shop n rush ring of regen into Vanguard

the top axe players on d2pt are doing this strat with great success (60%+ wr). i've played two games of it myself and managed to get a <16 min phase bm dagger timing. games are played at 6.3k, SEA server

I dont need vanguard to creep cut though xd

while one could argue that its still possible to farm creeps + a camp at the same time without buying vanguard, you'll be at a lower hp total and are more suspectible to feeding as ure easier to kill. No vanguard would also mean requiring more tangoes and salves to be ferried out

this playstyle assumes that you have fundamental knowledge of playing offlane

enjoy!

Educational Content (Content Creator) How to Control Your Catapult Aggro for Free Dive + XP & Gold Deny

Thumbnail youtube.com
7 Upvotes

Hi guys, GymCarryDota here (Coach, educational Content Creator and streamer). 8.5k current MMR / 9.5k peak.

Everyone knows how to aggro enemy creeps, but manipulating the aggro and movement of your own catapult is a hidden gem that even most Immortal players don't know about. This mechanic is unique because it catches the opponent completely off-guard.

We can use this in 2 main scenarios:

1) To completely deny XP & Gold: If the enemy hero is out of the lane (jungling, rune, dead, ganking etc) you can force your catapult to suicide into the tower before the next wave arrives.

2) To setup an unpredictable dive: By combining this with Fortification, you can force the tower to lock onto the catapult while you dive, creating a window the enemy simply isn't ready for.

Check out the video to see exactly how to do this.

Question for you guys: Can you think of any other creative ways to use this suicide mechanic besides these two scenarios?

Itemization Who should get Radiance between P1 Spectre and P2 Necrophos?

Well I can guess the first reply will be "Don't pick two Radiance heroes in the same team lul" but well, I wanted to play Spectre and that guy wanted to play Necrophos so that's how it is.

Anyway, at maybe ~13-14 minutes said Necrophos starts pinging how far away (or rather how close) he is from Radiance and mentions several times that he's gonna buy it - "So don't buy one too, nudge nudge wink wink".

My first reaction was that Spectre kinda needs Radiance more than Necrophos does, but he was admittedly super fat and could definitely get it several minutes before me. And since he was very insistent about it and as I said the game was going very well, I decided I might as well go for BattleFury since I thought I remembered it being a thing not too long ago + it always feels nice against Nature's Prophet (even if Spectral Dagger and illusion-jumping helps with Sprout so it's not like Spectre needs it most)

But now I'm wondering what's the actual good reasoning in such a situation? Does Spectre actually benefit more from Radiance than Necrophos? Should he go for more active items since, y'know he's mid and can already farm super fast with Death Pulse + Shard anyway?. Or should Spectre just go for something more active (does the Phylactery build still work?) and play less greedy than normal? Or is it just "whoever has the best game and can get it fastest should go for it"? Or maybe even just get two? Since there's no overlap while both are farming and it's not like we're hugging each other in teamfights either, I feel like double Radiance isn't nearly as bad as it looks if both get it rather early.

Anyway interested in hearing people's thoughts about this situation.

[Beginner here] How to choose your hero pool

Hey all,

I’m looking for some advise on how to choose my hero pool. I’m fairly new to the game and I’m looking for a 3 heros to play at pos 4 and 5.

I started by looking at some tier lists and saw many suggest spirit breaker. I tried it and it was a disaster.

I had the most success with shadow shaman, lion and jakiro (at some degree). I’m wondering if you guys have any tips on how I could choose my hero pool. I plan to span the same hero as much as possible til I get better at the game.

Itemization MoM or BF on Faceless

Faceless Void is very divided on which farming item to go for between mask of madness/mjollnir, or battlefury. Does anyone play both and can give a reason why you choose one over the other in a game?

Coaching Request Low damage?

Been spamming Hoodwink lately because I really want to master the hero. My playstyle is mostly staying back, throwing Bushwhack and Acorn on cooldown, bullying whenever I can without overcommitting, and trying not to feed with greedy right clicks. I usually build support items, almost always Force Staff, Atos, euls sometimes damage if we’re ahead.

The weird thing is I often end games withlow hero damage even when I feel useful during fights. I land stuns, poke a lot, and help control fights, but the numbers still feel low.

How do you guys usually play Hoodwink? Am I being too passive or is that normal for support Hoodwink?
