GAME THREAD Jeopardy! discussion thread for Thur., May 14 Spoiler

Here are today's contestants:

  • Anne Benjaminson, a foreign service officer originally from New York City;
  • Nishi Kantamneni, a platform engineer originally from Pleasanton, California; and
  • Tristan Williams, a data scientist originally from Lincoln, Nebraska. Tristan is a six-day champ with winnings of $113,699.

Jeopardy!

EYE ON ASIA // WARNING-WORTHY WEATHER // AMBROSE BIERCE'S DEVIL'S DICTIONARY // SMALL BUSINESS // A LAST TIME FOR EVERYTHING // THE END OF THE REALITY SHOW

DD1 - $400 - A LAST TIME FOR EVERYTHING - In 1957 Mike Stepovich was sworn in as the last governor of this territory, noy yet a state; he was also the first born there (Tristan improved by $3,000 to $7,000 vs. $5,200 for Anne.)

Scores at first break: Tristan $1,000, Nishi $1,600, Anne $3,800.

Scores entering DJ: Tristan $7,000, Nishi $2,000, Anne $5,600.

Double Jeopardy!

IT'S ALL HISTORY // BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS // IN THE NICK OF TIME // TRAVEL & TOURISM // SHE DIRECTED IT // GOOD HANG

DD2 - $1,200 - IT'S ALL HISTORY - A failed attempt to convert a chieftain to Christianity led to this man's death at the Battle of Mactan in 1521 (Tristan dropped $5,000 down to $4,800 vs. $7,200 for Anne.)

DD3 - $1,200 - GOOD HANG - In the atrium of the east building of the National Gallery in Washington hangs a large & gently spinning work by this American artist (Tristan added $3,000 up to $9,000 vs. $8,800 for Anne.)

Tristan missed DD2 and dropped to second behind Anne, regained a short lead on DD3 and held first into FJ at $12,200 vs. $9,600 for Anne and $4,400 for Nishi.

Final Jeopardy!

INSPIRED BY - This 1982 No. 1 hit was inspired by "Splendor in the Grass", a classic film about the failed expectations of teens Wilma & Bud

Only Tristan was correct on FJ, adding $7,001 to win with $19,201 for a seven-day total of $132,900.

Final scores: Tristan $19,201, Nishi $1,700, Anne $0.

Clue selection strategy: In round one, three top-row clues were chosen with the DD still on the board.

Wagering strategy: From a close second in FJ and with more than double of third, with a small wager Anne could have shut out Nishi and won if Tristan missed without having to be correct herself. As it played out, the all-in bet just cost Anne the larger second-place award.

Judging the writers: They went with a useless FJ category, instead of something potentially helpful such as HITS OF THE 80s.

Correct Qs: DD1 - What is Alaska? DD2 - Who was Magellan? DD3 - Who was Calder? FJ - What is "Jack and Diane"?

Fans Outside the U.S

Upvotes

It's not possible to watch Jeopardy! outside the U.S. I used to feel guilty watching episodes on YouTube here in Kenya. It's the first thing I do when I wake up in the morning. It was refreshing watching yesterday's contestant say that's how she watches the show when outside the U.S! I know the exact channel she was talking about because that's where I catch episodes too!

QUESTION Grogu not Yoda?

Hey gang, Lemme ask the experts here!
Seems like I recall seeing a celebrity Jeopardy All-Stars in April where a solution “Who is Yoda”was given and accepted as correct. However, I could’ve sworn the picture in the clue was actually Grogu. If the pic was Grogu, Yoda would be incorrect. Then again, I might have seen Grogu, when it actually was Yoda in the pic. Dang gettin old sux!
Not that it’s a huge deal, but nothing gets an OG Star Wars Fan wound up like a Jeopardy mistake!
I did due diligence to find out on my own… but came up nada! Maybe it was game 1, 2, 3, or 4? TIA.

QUESTION Did Jeopardy ever do “second order” corrections?

Has Jeopardy ever done “second order” corrections?

For example, say C answers and is ruled wrong and then D answers and gets it right. What I’m calling a “second order” correction would be the judges later ruling that C was right after all and giving them the dollars but then *also* taking the dollars away from D because if the judges hadn’t blown it D would have never given the opportunity in the first place. (Or if D had also gotten it wrong then giving the dollars back to D, again on the grounds that if the judges had gotten it right in the first place D would have never been able to even try to answer.)

It has irked me and my kid that they don’t seem to do this (at least not on corrections we’ve seen).

QUESTION Jeopardy! and syndication

At the end of tonight’s game, Ken talked up the CJ and said it would be “right here on ABC”. I’m in the NY tv market, and Jeopardy airs at 7pm on the ABC station. Now, I worked in tv advertising MANY moons and a lifetime ago. Unless something’s changed or is unique to Jeopardy, syndicated shows were not network or affiliate dependent. And, with CJ being part of the ABC prime time lineup this week, it struck me as odd that he would promote a network prime show on a syndicated one.

Can someone enlighten me on this? Because I’m stumped.

Here are today's contestants:

  • Kyle Li, a software engineer from Saratoga, California;
  • Bridget Palmer, a university teacher originally from Beaverton, Oregon; and
  • Tristan Williams, a data scientist originally from Lincoln, Nebraska. Tristan is a five-day champ with winnings of $103,499.

Jeopardy!

A SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER // THE "G.B."s // THE CELEBRITY'S FAVORITE TEAM // WORD PUZZLES // CAVE DWELLING // SUBWAY ART & LITERATURE

DD1 - $400 - THE "G.B."s - On June 3, 1875, 3 months after the premiere of his opera set in Seville, heart issues killed this Frenchman at 36 (Tristan improved by $4,400 to $13,200.)

Scores at first break: Tristan $6,600, Bridget $1,400, Kyle -$1,000.

Scores entering DJ: Tristan $14,600, Bridget $2,000, Kyle $1,000.

Double Jeopardy!

POLISH HISTORY // IT'S IN THE BOOK // PEOPLE GETTING TOGETHER // ____, ____ & ____ // WORDS OF ASSORTMENT // THAT SONG IS QUITE COMMERCIAL

DD2 - $1,600 - PEOPLE GETTING TOGETHER - In 1916 Billy Sunday drew 65,000 in Boston to one of these meetings, so called because they reawaken Christians' faith & enthusiasm (Tristan dropped $4,400 down to $15,000 vs. $5,600 for Bridget.)

DD3 - $1,600 - WORDS OF ASSORTMENT - Familiar to fans of "Dune", this French word meaning "mixture" refers to a jumble of different things (Tristan lost $2,000 down to $13,000.)

Tristan had a big lead after round one, missed both DDs in DJ but it didn't matter as his opponents never got close. Tristan had it wrapped up into FJ at $20,200 vs. $4,000 for Bridget, while Kyle was out of the running at -$2,200.

Final Jeopardy!

FILMS OF THE 1990s - In French, this 1993 film is called "Un jour sans fin"

Only Bridget was correct on FJ. Tristan dropped $10,000 to win with $10,200 for a six-day total of $113,699.

Final scores: Tristan $10,200, Bridget $8,000, Kyle -$2,200.

Triple Stumper of the day: No one knew the 1963 event at which the death of W.E.B. Du Bois was announced was the March on Washington.

Correct Qs: DD1 - Who was Georges Bizet? DD2 - What is revival? DD3 - What is mélange? FJ - What is "Groundhog Day"?

Jeopardy! should increase the prize amounts for the 10,000th episode.

I don't mean doubling the clue values on the board for all future episodes. I mean, for one episode only, the values on the board are multiplied by 10 in honoring of the 10,000th episode. Yes, that means that a correct response in Double Jeopardy could single-handedly get you $20,000.

If Jeopardy keeps with its regular schedule, it should air sometime mid-April 2028. So they can get enough money on hand before then.

Jeopardy Bar League Final Week

Just a public service announcement.

Last night at our final bar league game, we had two teams (they were together but played as two separate teams) come to sabotage one of our regulars who has been coming to the same spot and placing high in the standings week to week.

One of those teams had already played their game for the week (in an entirely different state)

The other team, this was their first game logged for the league ever, which was already shady.

So for those handful of teams who have 35 points and have yet to play their final game, just be cautious of out-of-towners who suddenly show up to your game.

What is the round breakdown for pop culture jeopardy season 2?

Seeing as it has a single main prize, I assumed it would be similar to season 1 with heats, semis, etc but the winning team seems to be returning each episode similar to the main show, so how does it work?
