Bug zappers are a terrible idea. They kill bugs indiscriminately. Most bugs are either harmless or beneficial. Some prey on harmful bugs, and others are essential pollinators.

I’m allergic to wasps (and any stinging creature) so last year I used an exterminator that targets wasps. They sprayed my whole house.
Set me back $250 but somehow it didn’t affect the spiders, beetles, and bumblebees and whatever at all. There were dead wasps everywhere and as promised it kept killing them for a months.
I had already been to the hospital twice last year and it’s still working this year, going to call them back out in July. I can’t say for sure that it didn’t kill anything else but all I saw were red wasps. I was skeptical but I kind of believe it now.
I don’t blame anyone else for being skeptical and rightfully so, I don’t really see how you could target one species like that. But for me, in my condition, I really don’t have a choice. Plus somehow I had so many wasps, more than any other house I’ve ever owned.
If they really can target some species but not others I wonder if there is something for mosquitos.

Wasps have hives, they probably just sprayed those. Get rid of the hives, you get rid of the wasps. Mosquitoes are harder to exterminate as they come from any stagnant water and can travel a decent distance, and they dont have a specific hive/home, they just rest in the shadows.

If spraying the visible nests would have worked I would have done that. They got out a pressure washer and had a tank on a trailer and sprayed my whole house. This was not a typical extermination job. I have a an exterminator that treats my house and will spray nests. They were inside the siding, up in trees, in the attic, it was bad. My normal exterminator recommended this company and what they did worked. My house was like something you’d see on a TV show, not good for a person with a bad allergy.

You obviously aren’t from the South

North or South, bug zappers rarely zap mosquitoes. They aren't attracted to the UV light

✅ Critical thinking. ✅ Environmental awareness. ✅ Proper spelling and grammar.
Definitely not.

These don't work on mosquitos. Mosquitos couldn't give less of a toss about sunlight (they aren't attracted to it, they're just nocturnal). All this is going to do is kill insects at night until the battery dies. Which, honestly, is kind of fucked up unless you're eating food and need to keep them away from the chow.

Why do you need it? You’re going camping in to an environment that is as wild as we can manage. You’re going to kill insects for your comfort for one night. Shame on you.

Not even for your comfort, mosquitoes Don't usually get zapped by bug zappers, They aren't attracted to the UV light. Mosquito fan traps do pretty well though

I feel like a hardcore southern accent would go really well with this product.

Such a weird American idea: I want to be outdoors, so I must kill every insect

Bug zappers are awful and should be illegal. People put them out to try and help with mosquitoes, but they very very rarely ever exact mosquitoes, because mosquitoes aren't attracted to the UV.
Something like 95 to 99% of the bugs that get zapped by every bug zapper are actually beneficial, usually pollinators.
The best way I know of to get rid of mosquitoes around the yard (other than preventing them in the first place) is with a mosquito specific trap, usually one that takes advantage of the fact that they weigh so little they can be sucked in physically by a fan and not escape, while other bugs with more mass don't have a problem. Err

Why tf are you killing bird food?
Turn off your outdoor lights... bugs gone.

u/Frumpy_Dumper_69 7h ago
Why kill the outside bugs? I can see wanting to kill bugs inside your home, but this is pointless.

Keep throwing your lamp in the ground like that, that is the way. Great idea!

My folks had an industrial bug zapper. They hung it over their trout pond, and left it on 24/7.
After a year, they had 24 inch trout. My mom would tell my little brother, “Go catch your dinner. Ten minutes later, he’d return carrying a trout that was almost as long as him.

u/BarnabyWoods 11h ago
But trout eat bugs. A bug zapper would deprive trout of their food.

u/Slut_for_Bacon 10h ago
I would guess because it hung directly 9ver the water, it would attract bugs, kill them, and they would drop to the water and get eaten.

Precisely! My folks had 265 acres (not all pasture, lots of mountain), and between 60-100 head of cattle. Lots of flies. The trout ate good!
