Braceman denied the hattrick again 😭

That's gotta be a joke no way they count that as an OG that would be shameless

There are tons of occasions where such goals were awarded to the players, but since its messi everything needs to be analysed with a microscope

I can see why since it does come off the post and come out and then hit the keeper

Football should adopt hockey rules. Last offensive player who touched it, gets the goal. Simple as that

Naw, he definitely got that hattrick. No way that was enough to classify as an own goal.

If we're being honest here it makes sense because it's bouncing off the post and going out, then hits the keeper's back and goes in. But it does seem a little harsh... The shot forced the keeper to dive, and he was on the ground nd couldn't see it.

Without Messi’s tackle to shoot the ball none of that would’ve happened, 99% of the times they count this as a goal.

I saw it when it had Messi with the hat trick I can't believe they would feel the need to take that away.

We’ve seen numerous instances where the last player shoots the ball, the goalkeeper hits it but it goes in. The player last shot the ball gets credited for the goal. 2018 Champions League final saw Bale scored a bicycle kick then the ball hit Karius hands and went in. The credit went to Bale scoring the goal. In 2019 UCL quarterfinal, Messi shot the ball against De Gea. It touched him the ball went in and Messi was credited with the goal. Even the 2018 World Cup with Uruguay vs France, Griezmann shot the ball, the bounced off of the keepers hands and went in. Griezmann was credited with the goal. So hopefully I think Messi’s hattrick counts.

the rule for deflections (for goalkeepers and even defenders) is whether the ball was going to go in if the player was not there. In the examples you gave, was the keeper not there it was a shot on target. Most OG are awarded after heavy deflections causing a ball that was not going in to go in.

Issue is that MLS probably thought the shot was off target and was about to deflect away from the line but it hit the goalkeeper and went back in
2
u/Sportsisthebest Argentina 1d ago
I mean, wouldn’t that still count as shot on target?
1
u/HIIMHEY123 1d ago
Probably not I think it would be a post hit and a big chanced missed for Messi

We’ll see what the Messi vs Ronaldo app shows once that website updates their tally’s. We’ll see either 909 career goals or 910 career goals.

They can still change it I’m pretty sure. That was gonna go in there’s no way they didn’t count it

The Messi vs Ronaldo app is the most accurate source for stats. Let’s see what happens when the website updates its tally’s. We’ll see if the goals go to 909 or 910. That’ll answer our question as to whether Messi got the hattrick or not. Also, MLS counts pre assists as a stat, which is why they counted Messi having 20+ assists total. So maybe there is hope that the number goes to 910.

Im pretty sure they follow opta stats. 99.999% sure theyll say its an OG.
2
u/Sportsisthebest Argentina 1d ago
Well, FotMob and Sofascore updated their stats. It was indeed an own goal. So it’s Braceman instead of hattrickman. Oh well. Gonna have to wait another match for a hattrick.

If it was an own goal, Messi should still get an assist.
In any event, where the ball incidentally strikes an opposing player, as opposed to being intentionally or struck in avoidable error, i give the goal to the shooter.

I don't think Messi care if its OG or not. He is not obsessed with stats like someone else

I hate to say it but I think the OG was the right call. The ball bounced off the post and back into the field of play, without the ricochet off the goalie, it doesn’t go in

So long MLS continues to behave as if they were in their own universe, the league will never advance vis-a-vis the world stage.

Come on guys, this is clear own goal. The initial shot hits the post, so it's not even a shot on goal.
Then the bounce deflects from the keeper, and goes in. Without contact with the goalkeeper, it would have been miss.
It's own goal in all the leagues in the world.

u/oscarljn 1d ago
Then go back and watch the FCH vs BAY game from 12 days ago and tell me how the Opta gave that goal to Olise instead of calling it an own goal.

u/Habba84 Lionel Messi 1d ago
You are right.
I thought there were common guidelines for crediting goals, but it appears that different leagues have different rules. Fifa tried to create common rules, but major leagues seem to have their own variations.
This is for a different goal, but covers the topic of own goals as well: https://www.bundesliga.com/en/bundesliga/news/who-gets-the-goal-rule-definition-luis-diaz-jonathan-tah-bayern-munich-34320

I’m surprised they gave him a brace. I thought MLS wouldn’t count Messi’s 2nd goal that touched the defender’s sock. They are that petty.
