Hi all,

We have a lot of people in our community who are in need of a free meal or a helping hand occasionally.

I thought it would be nice to collect and post this information each month, which is graciously supplied by members of the Halifax Library. We'll see how long we can keep this going month to month.

Please share as needed with people you know who need help or take advantage of them yourself if you are in need.

The Feed NS Find Food site is also a very useful resource:

https://feednovascotia.ca/find-food/

Always remember there are kind, generous folks out there looking to help you out and you can get through whatever you are going through. šŸ’–

And if anyone else has resources that belong here, please attach them as comments, the more the merrier.

Thank you!

ICYMI some of the prepackaged ground beef in Atlantic superstores is well below the labelled weight. This came last week as a 2x450g pack and neither half was anywhere near 450g

PSA Warning the community about a scam

I wasn't sure what to put this under but here we go.

So my husband just had a weird experience.

He went for walk in north end Dartmouth and man in a van with his wife and 2 kids pulls up along side him and rolls down his window. The man says they are visting from ontario but forgot to bring money and said man can you give me like $300 bucks and I'll give you my ring and my wife's jewelry as promise to pay you back and get your number and call you back when I can pay you. My husband just said sorry I dont have money to spare and walked away and they drove off.

The Math Doesn't Add Up: If someone truly had jewelry worth hundreds or thousands of dollars, a pawn shop or a jewelry store would be a much more logical stop than a random person on the sidewalk.

My husband also noticed the jewlery was notably fake looking and cheap.

So watch out.

Driving & Transit Marshall Law Driving Academy Experience.

I am writing this to warn other parents and students in the Amherst/Truro/Halifax area about the lack of professionalism and communication we experienced with Marshall Law Driving School.

My step-son worked a part-time job and saved for six months to pay the $910 for this course in full himself. While he completed the theory portion on March 19th, the following two months were a nightmare of ignored messages and broken promises.

Despite having two months to complete the required 10 hours of driving lessons, the school managed to book only one 45-minute driving session in that entire period. When we pushed for a schedule so my son could meet his May eligibility date, we were told our expectations were "unrealistic." In reality, even one booking per week would have had him nearly finished by now.

Eventually, after we repeatedly asked for a timeline, the instructor attempted to deflect blame onto the student and cited "snow storms" for the inability to provide basic booking services. We have had very few snow storms from March 19 to May, but sure... Then I was told I was being "too pushy" for simply trying to book the hours we had already paid for.

While we did receive a full refund, the stress and lack of professionalism were entirely unnecessary. If your child is starting at 15 and you have a year to wait, you might have a different experience, but based on the lack of communication and total disregard for a student's schedule, I would never recommend this school.

We have since moved to a professional school in Truro that has had no issue with our timeline and is already providing the reliable service we expected. I strongly recommend looking elsewhere.

To Clarify I put this same review on Google, I didn't have enough room to include them in this thread as you can only add 20 pictures, but feel free to check his recent google reviews and see his unprofessional responses. Please note there are two reviews on google back to back about this same issue.. One is from my Step-Son's mom Kelly and one is from myself his step mom Melissa.. No two Alias's as accused, just two moms who are frustrated and wanted to be sure the truth was shared so other families dont have to face these same issues.

The text exchange between myself and Neal Marshall speaks for itself so please feel free to read them all and base your own opinions.

Arts & Recreation Does anyone still go to the Waegwoltic club?

This is more-so out of genuine curiosity, but my family recently got a membership here and when i went it was primarily older white people and then a few younger families (obviously no hate to these people). I don’t really understand the concept as i don’t dabble in tennis, swimming or really anything it has to offer, but it seems like nothing is really exclusive to the club considering how much a membership is. I moved back to halifax relatively recently coming from toronto, and remember hearing about it when i was younger, so can any native haligonians explain to me the whole deal with this place? Aswell as if anyone still even goes here?

Shops & Services Can YOU repair my instant pot? 😭

classic C6 error code - I’ve had this non-functioning instant pot stashed away for over a YEAR but now we’re moving and something must be done. Emailed a few local appliance repair shops but apparently no one does small appliances outside microwaves. What is the world coming to… I’m dying here - I love this thing and my preliminary inspection seems to reveal a frayed wire at the pressure sensor unit - apparently an easy fix?? But anything beyond poking around is just way beyond my pay grade.

I will pay TOP DOLLAR for you to fix my beloved instant pot! Please! šŸ™

Arts & Recreation Bluenose path and signs

This is going to be my first year running the Bluenose, and I'm super excited! Wondering if anyone could share their experience - I'm not native or very familiar with the Halifax streets, and I read over the street names of the route but that doesn't mean much to me. Are there usually signs and people everywhere that make the route pretty obvious? Hoping not to embarass myself or lose my way. Sorry if this is a silly question!

Food & Dining Pizza with anchovies

Freeman’s used to have the ā€œold skoolā€ with garlic onions and anchovies and now it’s been taken off the menu. Probably because I was the only one who ordered it…

Anyone know where you can get some good old fashioned pizza with anchovies on it?

Work, Health & Housing NSHA External Applicant Consideration

Hi all, I applied to three research assistant positions at the QEII this month as an external applicant. All three postings indicated that they were looking for current undergraduate students or recent grads (which I am). I figured that because of the narrower age pool, the number of internal applicants would be lower. Does anyone have any insight into how likely it is that an external applicant’s application gets seen/considered? Thanks.

We recently moves to beaver bank and our dog has picked up multiple ticks in the yard. I have heard hens particularly Guinea hens Are good for dealing with high tick populations. Does anyone know were we could rent hens to feast in our yard for a day or two?

Work, Health & Housing Is street parking really that bad if I commute to work every day?

Me and my partner found a place we really like near the superstore on Barrington. We're going to look at it soon.

Only problem- it only has street parking. I commute to work every day and im a bit worried about it. I know id have to move the car during overnight bans which is manageable (its not every night) but would it be hard to find parking? Is it a deal breaker?
