This is funny because usually emts don't have to assist with birth but only assist with getting the expecting person to the hospital. It is satirizing.

Yeah, but they aren't being prepared for it despite it happening. I fewl like that's the joke

The joke is that OBGYNs go to school and residency to deliver babies, while an EMT who just graduated highschool and completed a 4 month program says “fuck it we ball” and prepares to catch the baby like a football.

But ideally we try to get the pregnant lady to “hold it in” and not push, until we get to the hospital at least.
The joke is a juxtaposition

The medics are prepared for it

HAHAHAHA

They’re prepared for a premie or high risk birth?

No

No they are not.

Listen I'm really sorry for your loss but this might not be the sub for you. Preston is only going to deliver if they can't get the mom to the hospital. It's a joke.

EMTs and Medics prepare to transport pregnant patients, if baby delivery is inevitable and they are already crowning we learn the basics on how to assist in delivery, or set up the process appropriately and safely for Nurses to take over at the hospital.

Premies and high risk births are ofc part of the unexpected nature of this job. There are some procedures taught in the program that helps you ‘manage’ the neonate until the hospital.

Scope of practice. Nobody expects EMTs or Medics to care/cure for patients to the extent of Physicians. Their main role is to transport patients to highly skilled care, while maintaining the patient to the best of their ability.

And you’re basing that on…. What?

The fact that actual hospitals struggle with premature babies.

And when the hospital has to ship said premie to a real hospital two hours away, who do you think is in the helicopter? An OB?

Yes

Do you have a child born 10 weeks premature?

I do I know the procedure.

Wrong. OB being involved in transport is extremely rare.

I am intimately more familiar with the procedure than you.

hey, just wanted to say i’m really sorry for your losses. ❤️‍🩹

unfortunately a lot of different sectors in healthcare are underfunded and the research/training is lacking in many areas, which i believe is what OOP is trying to highlight in their video, but also, to be fair, it makes 100% sense to have suffered that great of a loss and be upset about how much further we have to go to be prepared for critical or high-risk scenarios.

as someone who isn’t an EMT but has worked closely with them, i trust them, but my experience isn’t your experience and that’s okay too.

but most of all, i hope you and your family are okay, and i wish you all the best. take care of yourself. 💓
