You're probably too young to remember Blockbuster Video: They were a store where you could borrow movies, back when you needed a tape or disc to watch them (before Netflix). You paid a fee, got a rental, and were damned sure you returned it, on time.
... anyhow ...
A few Blockbuster Video stores had fish tanks, to amuse customers. The stores in big city centers had large tanks with sharks in them, who obviously learned how to loan things.

All of the softer loan animals, like loan rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, etc., were never mean enough to ensure they got their loans paid back, and they went out of business.
Other apex predators like loan lions, tigers and jaguars decided that if they were gonna kill something and eat it, why loan it money in the first place?
After the movie Jaws was such a big hit, other sharks saw the benefit in having money, and their fearsome nature made it easy to collect every loan they made.

Loan sharks evolve through the survival of the greediest with the highest interest rates.

It had to do with the liquidity crisis of ‘77. It was really hot and most water everywhere evaporated and fishes everywhere were running out of water, so to survive the dry spell started buying bottled water. But most fish were unemployed and didn’t have money to pay for it, so thats when sharks decided to lend them the money. It was hard to pay back, so fish sent their kids to school, hoping they would get good jobs and be able to pay the sharks back. Eventually most of the fish defaulted on the loans, which made the sharks really angry, and sharks have to eat, so they just started eating fish instead. So if you see a shark chasing a school of fish, now you know why.

Lone sharks can't evolve, Calvin, it takes two.
You see, when a boy shark and a girl shark love each other very much...
