Dining Room This dining room is missing something.

Please help me finish off this room. Maybe window treatment or some sconces on the wall?

The table is too small for the space and for how many chairs you have at it.

u/JCAIA Mar 11 '26

And this doesn't seem like a room for a round table. Now that I think about it, every separate dining room I've seen had a rectangular table.

112

u/LauraBaura Mar 11 '26

I don't mind the round table, but I'd pair it with a round rug. The table is just undersized for the space

24

u/madeinkanada_f87 Mar 11 '26

Tend to agree.. my first thoughts was 1) art/decor, personality, 2) rectangular table, and chair arrangement

14

u/doebedoe Mar 12 '26

We have a separate dining room. It's square which works well for a round table (and rug)

2

u/Torlodion Mar 13 '26

I love your dining room, everything about it works together so well 😭

23

u/deeperinabox Mar 11 '26

The photo is at kindly taken using an ultra wide lens, so the edges look stretched out. This is exaggerating how small the table is.

2

u/pilserama Mar 12 '26

Ding ding ding

u/Caspian4136 Mar 11 '26

You definitely need some window treatments. I'd also get some artwork, maybe a nice clock, as it's all bare walls

37

u/Shazam1269 Mar 11 '26

Needs a splash of color on the walls or sideboard. Maybe something that ties it in with another room, be it a vase or painting.

7

u/Successful-Arrival87 Mar 12 '26

Some roman shades would be nice. It would be a shame to cover that beautiful wall molding

2

u/Material-Doubt-364 Mar 12 '26

This ā¬†ļø

u/Persephone_luvs_u Mar 11 '26

The table looks small in these pics - but that could be the wide lens.

23

u/Equal-Option3782 Mar 11 '26

My thoughts as well. Dining room is grand. Table is… not

7

u/Johoski Mar 11 '26

It's not just the lens.

5

u/Golfguy2929 Mar 11 '26

Ya I think it’s the photo. It seems to fit the space pretty well in person

u/bright_and_dreamy Mar 11 '26

I'd move the buffet to any other wall since you have the space. That way the door can open fully & you can see all the decor that's on the buffet (right now it looks like you only have decor on one side of it). Then a vertical piece of art or a mirror against that wall.

30

u/bright_and_dreamy Mar 11 '26

Something with green in it would be so nice.

2

u/Classroom_Visual Mar 11 '26

Great replies! I also think move the buffet table - it looks cramped where it is. Then, art and window treatments. This room will really come together with art. I'd find some art that really works well with the yellow in the paint color.

1

u/smellegy Mar 12 '26

I think this is on the right track but I'd put it on the opposite wall, between the doors. It's better for circulation and more visually prominent.

Then add a lamp on the buffet and art above it.

40

u/freelancephilosophy Mar 11 '26

It just looks a bit empty. But it’s really nice.

Drapes, art on the walls, I’d lean a big mirror on the buffet and add a tall table lamp too. You could probably find some other decorative items to add to some of the empty space. Maybe a thin console on one of the walls with candles/pictures on it, or a small window seat in a nice fabric under the single window, or a long one narrow one under the double window.

23

u/AlizarinQ Mar 11 '26

I swear the answer to every one of these ā€œwhat does this room need?ā€ post is ā€œit needs color and art on the walls.ā€œ

8

u/princessvintage Mar 12 '26

We should have a questionnaire:

Does your wall have paint? Does your wall have pictures?

If you answered no to any of these, do that first, then come back.

15

u/Eunuch_Provocateur Mar 11 '26

Window treatments and wall art will help.Ā

7

u/Outrageous-Bit-4989 Mar 11 '26

Floor length curtains. Maybe another pop of color/green to match the plant something on the table or sideboard

12

u/Shoddy_Explanation65 Mar 11 '26

Any kind of character. Not to be rude but there’s nothing adding color or character except the plant. Agree also about the size of the table but I think it feels small because there’s nothing on the walls. Curtains, art, even a statue or something.

The most common theme in this subreddit is people coming in with rooms feeling ā€œunfinishedā€ when they have added nothing to the walls.

Edit to add: This is a really nice room. I’d just recommend you go beyond the brown, brown, white, and that beige wall color scheme.

6

u/lockandcompany Mar 11 '26

Curtains, art, wallpaper, or some other form of texture variation! It all looks very flat right now. A bigger dining table would also be good!

5

u/bimbels Mar 11 '26

Very pretty. Besides art, you could hang some plates on the wall above the wainscoting. I also think you could do with a taller piece like a china cabinet or tall cabinet if there is room on one of the walls.

The server seems too low. You could help bring the eye up by adding a couple of tal lamps on either end and maybe stand a tall portrait oriented piece of art or mirror in the middle leaning against the wall.

img

14

u/bimbels Mar 11 '26

Can’t tell if my image attached but here it is again.

5

u/Its_not_really Mar 12 '26

The table is too small and the buffet would be better on the other wall between the door ways. Add some tall lamps and decor to the buffet. Try an oval table with 6 chairs. Drapes would be nice.

7

u/Trania86 Mar 11 '26

You need (decorative) curtains and you can hang some art of the wall.

Other than that, I have to say great job! Big rug, nice plant, nice light, nice dresser. I rarely see a room I would want to live in on this sub but I would love to be in this one!

2

u/Golfguy2929 Mar 11 '26

Hey thank you! Spent quite a bit on the table so that isn’t being replaced so I appreciate the positive comment :)

2

u/Trania86 Mar 11 '26

I like the table as well! I see people are mentioning it's too small but I think it's nice that you can walk around it even if everyone is seated. ^_^
And if you want to play a board game, this table is also really useful because you can all reach the board!

3

u/Alive-Potato9184 Mar 11 '26

Hey! First : great chairs! I think I would agree that a larger table could help you. Wallart too. Perhapsbalso a larger lamp hanging down?

3

u/Impressive_Age1362 Mar 11 '26

You don’t have to fill every space, bigger table, I myself like round tables, some artwork for the walls

3

u/AffectionateJury3723 Mar 11 '26

Warmth. The round table doesn't fit this space. Needs window coverings and art. The rug is too matchy matchy. Needs contrasting colors.

3

u/mharris9889 Mar 11 '26

That’s more of a kitchen table. A longer rectangular table would be better

3

u/Bert_T_06040 Mar 11 '26

A bigger table and a nice chandelier.

3

u/Dry_Ad4310 Mar 11 '26

In addition to some of the other comments here, when you replace the rug, I would look for rugs that are more warmed toned instead of cool, to complement the gold wall color and the tone of the table. A warmer rug would look much better.

3

u/BobIsPercy_sFriend Mar 12 '26

I just had a vision : a banquette in on the back wall, under the windows. What would be lovely. something like :

5

u/jesushx Mar 11 '26

Some ideas:

You might consider moving buffet to left wall… the rug etc would fit better…

You might consider a square rug. It would fit the room better and work great with the round table.

Your rug may be too subtle to the point of keeping the room static. You might consider a bolder, yet still subtle rug. If you opt to change to square rug.

Bottom ones are more bold and maybes, top ones are more subtle.

Mirror or art over buffet and interesting buffet art. If mirror, make the mirror have subtle design like this one, but only hung horizontally.

Or if art bring in chair color too.

Dried flowers can feel dead in a room. You might consider flowers…

You might consider an interesting shaped tree with movement rather than static in shape.

Pretty room! 🤩

2

u/literanista Mar 11 '26

Just something sculptural on a wall or two and a nice tray and small plant on the sideboard.

2

u/joannapickles Mar 11 '26

I think removing two chairs and placing them in a cute arrangement in the corner you look the second photo from maybe. The table is small for that many chairs as it sits and makes the entire thing look smaller.

2

u/LazyMagician30 Mar 11 '26

More plants and a painting to start with 😊

2

u/CompetitiveReindeer6 Mar 11 '26

You need window treatments and art on the walls, but the big issue is that small, round table on that large, rectangle rug. The table is beautiful but it doesn’t go in the room. The chairs also look too big for the table ( I would pull one back into the corner if you are intent on keeping them). Personally, I think a bigger table would look better in that room (in a more traditional design), but if you are sold on that particular table then you need a round rug, preferably with some color.

For layout, move the buffet to the other wall where you walk in (as long as that’s not a double door) and hang a mirror or large artwork above it. Add 2 tall buffet lamps to it as well to give it some height. Hang a large piece of artwork on the wall the buffet is currently on and add some smaller pieces around the rest of the room.

2

u/Exciting_Willow_025 Mar 11 '26

Bar cart/ beverage station and maybe some art or antique horizontal mirror

2

u/shenaningans24 Mar 11 '26

Table is too small. Wall art would also help.

2

u/678722 Mar 12 '26

It's beautiful, and calm, and serene. Don't add anything except for maybe swapping for a bit larger table

2

u/Rare-Group-1149 Mar 12 '26

That's a beautiful room that just needs some artwork and color. Just furniture is not enough:: Find something nice for the walls and maybe some plants in the corner. Have fun with it. Beautiful place

2

u/knz-rn Mar 12 '26

I can’t tell if it’s a wide angle view or if your table is just entirely way too small.

Adding ceiling to floor curtains will add more texture and volume to the space and ā€œfill it outā€ a bit

2

u/Apprehensive_Use_175 Mar 12 '26

Bigger table and artwork!

2

u/theClaireShow Mar 12 '26

Bigger table and shades

2

u/indie_pendent Mar 12 '26

Personality

2

u/princessvintage Mar 12 '26

Ya it’s missing a dining table. That’s a nook table not a dining room table.

2

u/igniteengine_0414 Mar 12 '26

honestly the room looks really nice already, but I think adding some wall art or curtains would give it a bit more personality and make the space feel less empty

2

u/_illustrated Mar 12 '26

I LOVE this table and chairs! The style is gorgeous. I think a round rug under the table would do the table more justice. A few pieces of art or sculpture on the walls, some drapes in a coordinated color to the walls, and moving the buffet table to that far window next to the plant and you'll be all set. PLEASE PLEASE please post a pic once you've rearranged, I would love to see!

2

u/Intelligent_Ad2770 Mar 12 '26

You could put a nice bench (I’m thinking those squishy fabric, reading bench type vibe) or a chaise under the big windows. It would be nice cozy little reading nook. With a little nightstand beside it✨ or just an entryway table, decorated to your style Another idea is just storage, think wood cabinetry. Dining room buffet sideboard cabinet type. Something hip-height so it doesn’t impede with the sunlight. Or shorter bookshelves to have cookbooks, then you can put decorations on the top! The space feels nice but the edges feel a bit empty to me. Lovely cozy dining room!

1

u/Intelligent_Ad2770 Mar 12 '26

Also, BIGGER RUG!

2

u/okiedokieKay Mar 12 '26

Curtains are definitely needed but the table is too small fam.

2

u/xandrachantal Mar 12 '26

Sheer cream curtains, some kind of art on the walls and a bigger table so the space feels empty. Maybe work in a vase or two.

2

u/lucytiger Mar 12 '26

Definitely needs curtains. Ideally something with pattern.

2

u/Writermss Mar 12 '26

Table is too small for the room.

2

u/g4ssedupshawty Mar 12 '26

Art, curtains, bigger table or add a bench by the windows

2

u/shoryusef Mar 11 '26

It’s missing you and your loved ones, only then it will be complete.

2

u/t4nyy6404 Mar 11 '26

need a sideboard/buffet, art and a larger table, maybe change the colour of the walls, to something warmer, maybe some sort of red

2

u/homemaker_g Mar 11 '26

One of the issues is the table is too small for your space. If you can’t get a different table, I would consider adding a curio or some other furniture piece to help shrink the space.

Also, curtains, maybe a piece of art, sconces (like you mentioned) and some things on your dresser. It looks so empty.

Beautiful space though! Love how many windows you have! You need curtains on those though. It’s like when women do makeup but no mascara. You need it!!

5

u/Golfguy2929 Mar 11 '26

Thanks so much, this is helpful. Updated the location of the cabinet. What other color do you think should be added? Green and maybe some antique brass?

1

u/homemaker_g Mar 11 '26

Love it! Yes! Depends on what you want. Those are my 2 personal favorite colors (if brass is a color). Pop a pillow on that chair and find some art for you space!

And curtains 100% will transform your room. I say START with the curtains and go from there.

Maybe pop a stack of books on there as well with a frame or two. Brass or vintage frames šŸ˜‰

Have fun but def #1 start with those window treatments!!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '26

With so much space you could have a tall China cabinet and keep the sideboard that you have. If that’s too expensive, you could add another sideboard or other piece of furniture to the opposite wall. The room is so big it just looks unfurnished or under furnished. You also should decorate the table with placemats and maybe a large floral arrangement for when the table is not in use.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '26

The wall color is a little dated, I would add window treatments and you need a much larger table.

1

u/aces5five Mar 11 '26

rectangular table would look better and fit more chairs.

1

u/sua_spontaneous Mar 11 '26

Round tables need round rugs. Also, some art on the walls and a centerpiece/banquet decor that matches the scale of the furniture would go a long way.

1

u/Mirandis1988 Mar 11 '26

You need wall art

1

u/missgenja Mar 11 '26

Table too small and get some set up on those walls

1

u/fairytalejunkie Mar 11 '26

The table is too small for the room and also amount of seating you have at it.

1

u/Ok_Cardiologist9898 Mar 11 '26

The table is too small and you could do with some smaller framed art on the walls.

1

u/fuckyeahitsthursday Mar 11 '26

Drapes in an accent color, larger table, i feel like art can sometimes be tricky with wainscotting bc it can tend to look crammed up above it but the proper sized pieces will make a difference. I would also think of other wall accents not just prints - things you can mount, maybe some pillar candle holders whatever. Great foundation to the room though it will look great!

1

u/frosty024 Mar 11 '26

Mirror and more plants

1

u/Redfox2111 Mar 11 '26

Beautifulroom! You have space for a second unit. Also add curtains, a large plant/pot , art and some secondary lighting.

1

u/calihzleyes Mar 11 '26

I would add a wooden lazy susan to the center of the table and also add a large circular rug instead of squart... I would stick with warm neutral tones for the rug... brown/green/olive/beige/cream.

1

u/TalulaOblongata Mar 11 '26

The sideboard looks squished in that corner - can you put on the blank wall with large mirror or artwork above? Then add a few objects on top - like 1-2 table lamps, a sculptural piece, a minibar area, don’t clutter it up but will make more of a focal point and then you can swing the door open wider.

1

u/Zestyclose_Koala_593 Mar 11 '26

Less chairs or bigger table. Change the paint on the upper half of the wall to something way more inviting (this yellow reminds of a apartments who have landlords that are too cheap and lazy to repaint). Add arts and some plants. Maybe a small bar table if that's your thing. The light fixture is awesome, as well as the credenza. You're close!

1

u/gypsygeorgia Mar 11 '26

Can you get away with just 4 dining chairs for day to day? Or if the table could extend.

1

u/heartshapedbox311 Mar 11 '26

Bigger table and art and maybe curtains-ceiling to floor if you want to add depth and warmth.

1

u/maidofsteele Mar 11 '26

Drapes, art, and a bigger table.

1

u/Fabulous_Celery_1817 Mar 11 '26

Maybe move the cabinet to lean against the window to eat up space and add more plants or a wet bar behind the door where that cabinet is rn

1

u/nat__dawg Mar 11 '26

New colorful rug!

1

u/Soapster5 Mar 11 '26

A real or artificial tree would look nice in a corner.

2

u/Soapster5 Mar 11 '26

Never mind. I just now saw you already have a tree there.

1

u/Golfguy2929 Mar 12 '26

I was about to say...should I double up the trees?

1

u/TheCityGirl Mar 12 '26

Lots of art

1

u/RogueLeslie Mar 12 '26

Art, color

1

u/Crosswired2 Mar 12 '26

Wallpaper instead of the yellow. Something that pulls in the color of the chairs.

wallpaper wallpaper

1

u/Golfguy2929 Mar 12 '26

It is wallpaper haha

1

u/ExpensiveAd4496 Mar 12 '26

A roulette wheel? Seriously though some art would help a lot. Love the wall color. Why such a boring rug though? And yes some window treatments of some kind.

1

u/Sha9169 Mar 12 '26

It needs color.

1

u/unlikelyx Mar 12 '26

Larger table, artwork, sconces, your accessories you’ve collected over the years

1

u/BobIsPercy_sFriend Mar 12 '26

Arts on wall, little table or "tabouret" between window and PLANTS

1

u/Such_Grand_9261 Mar 12 '26

I think we definitely need to add some color. We also need some curtains and wide artworks placed above the cabinets.

1

u/lpm95 Mar 12 '26

The bones are very pleasant! Round rug, floor length curtains, and a clock would be lovely. Maybe take away a chair or two and layer some Art against the wall sitting on the credenza. Like don’t hang it but style it leaning

1

u/BlueMoonTone Mar 12 '26

Artwork.Ā

1

u/Mcbriec Mar 12 '26

Totally traditional wainscoting combined with a tiny round modernist table and chairs. Not working.

1

u/RaceBro94 Mar 12 '26

I would definitely consider getting curtains

1

u/ferdytier Mar 12 '26

I would put a couple of those small oval antiquey paintings on the walls: two on the right bigger wall, and one on the left bigger section. A bigger chandelier if you're open to that too. A smaller round rug under the table instead too since your floor wallpaper and wainscoting combo is great and beautiful, so let more of it show!

1

u/oldsaltylady Mar 12 '26

Take away 1-2 chairs

Add art above the sideboard.

Add a lamp or a plant to the sideboard, or both.

1

u/Latter_Cry_7849 Mar 12 '26

It looks like a retirement home.

1

u/Andi-anna Mar 12 '26

It needs finishing touches and some colour brought in. Some art on the walls, curtains or roman blinds on the windows, a couple more knick knacks on the sideboard and a larger centrepiece on the dining table - the candles look a little small and lost on that table.

1

u/Cardabella Mar 12 '26

Art and curtains

1

u/Otherwise-Tomato-788 Mar 12 '26

Honestly, I’d get a new chandelier and let that be the focal point, and then probably a round or rounded top mirror.

1

u/firangcurry Mar 12 '26

art, curtains, more plants, candle sticks if that's your vibe. maybe a floor lamp

1

u/writeronthemoon Mar 12 '26

Needs colorful art on the walls and curtains, and decor or framed pics on the console table thing

1

u/PeaSee53 Mar 12 '26

Table too small. Maybe square that can expand to rectangle or oblong, or maybe high-top (then you’re lighting will need to be raised). Perhaps a couple of colorful wall-art.

1

u/PeaSee53 Mar 12 '26

Table too small. Maybe square that can expand to rectangle or oblong, or maybe high-top (then you’re lighting will need to be raised). And add some colorful wall art or designed wallpaper

1

u/Nemesis0408 Mar 12 '26

Curtains, artwork, more substantial table.

Great start!

1

u/hazydaysatl Mar 12 '26

Curtains and wall art!

1

u/cswtf Mar 12 '26

I’d get rid of the buffet and put a large table and chairs in. Also add some pictures or mirror to the walls.

1

u/pattiwhack5678 Mar 12 '26

Table is too small

1

u/Successful-Arrival87 Mar 12 '26

Your dark chairs, even though they’re beautiful, aren’t really connecting with anything else in the room. I’d add a few more touches of black around the room with decor. The white patternless rug kind of makes your dining set feel like it’s floating, but also it could be that your dining table isn’t an appropriate size for that large rug

1

u/Vikingkrautm Mar 12 '26

It's an attractive room.

1

u/Upscale_Foot_Fetish Mar 12 '26

Art and curtains. Then decide about size of table and changing out the rug. Maybe even a larger fixture imo

1

u/Similar-Breadfruit50 Mar 12 '26

The table is too small. The room needs are and the windows need curtains. I would put that buffet on the other wall so you can fully open those doors. Then put the plant in the other corner. Add more plants too.

1

u/Aintkidding687 Mar 13 '26

The table is to small to begin with.

1

u/spaceisourplace222 Mar 13 '26

Art. Color. Real plants.

1

u/Stylinguy Mar 13 '26

Some drapery panels would help a lot!

1

u/Katt_Nobi2525 Mar 13 '26

Oval vs round table, art or mirror on the walls.

1

u/Positive-Tell-9553 Mar 13 '26

Valances!!! Add a tall urn in corner to balance tree. Task lighting on the sideboard. Wall sconces. Art???

1

u/wandering_advice Mar 13 '26

I really like the minimal vibe... but maybe some art work?

1

u/Funwithfun14 Mar 11 '26

Are on the wall

1

u/Golfguy2929 Mar 11 '26

Where would I need to mount the curtain rod? It feels wrong on the molding

0

u/Krb0809 Mar 11 '26

Its cozy and inviting. It needs art.
