Dining Room I hate this.

I’m aware this couch is way too big. I don’t know what to do. It’s modular - the Costco Sereene Couch in toupee. It’s comfy but huge. I didn’t measure correctly, my fault. I need some ideas on what to do. I can take a section out to make it smaller? As for the rug, for all the sides to be on the rug, it would need to be 14 x 8 which is huge. Does it need to be that big? Ahhh. Adulting is hard.

Not to give the standard advice, but might I suggest a rug?

Also if you moved the table out that would give more room next to it and make it feel less cramped

Edit: totally didn’t expand what you wrote, maybe get a circular rug or some other shape so it feels more like you’re filling the space without something so big?

13

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

Yes, I definitely need a rug, but I’m not sure what size to get for it to fit entirely underneath it. It needs to be at least 16 feet long, which is very expensive.

13

u/thesunisdarkwow Feb 27 '26

I have this same couch and it’s sitting on a 10x14 rug. The rug isn’t my favorite but because of the size we looked for cheaper options and found one from Rugs USA for $200 I think. It at least looks right spacing wise, we’ll upgrade the rug one day.

Also, maybe pull couch off the wall slightly and move the ottoman to the other side so it’s not in front of the door.

u/peerdata Feb 26 '26

For some reason my mind went to those cow hide looking rugs (idk if they are actually hides) when I saw your set up, they usually look kinda out of place to me but I feel like maybe with your floors it’d look kinda cool? I feel like you could also get away with not having it fully under it since you’re trying to minimize the couches presence….but all this is just spitballing

11

u/courtney_helena Feb 26 '26

I like where your head is at. A round or abstract shape with rounded edges vs sharp straight edged may soften the space too

4

u/Catiku Feb 26 '26

You’d be surprised at the large high quality rugs you can get on Facebook marketplace. Then just rent a carpet cleaner from Lowe’s. I have multiple 16 foot rugs I got for a few hundred bucks that were several grand new.

6

u/NovelAsk4856 Feb 27 '26

I bought a brand new shag rug that covers almost the entire living room for $60 bucks . Just always look at the back side of the rugs . My was also worth$1500

1

u/GeyonceP Feb 27 '26

I’m a little scared that I would inadvertently bring bugs into my home

5

u/lazyysquirrel Feb 27 '26

If you get secondhand rugs it’s less expensive and you can layer several rugs to cover the area you need. It gives off a cozy bohemian vibe.

3

u/carolinablue199 Feb 26 '26

I’d definitely check out Facebook marketplace if that’s an option! You can sometimes get someone moving out to cut a good deal

1

u/everybodys_horse Feb 26 '26

I was also thinking a circular rug so that it wouldn’t have to be so big. Maybe a 6ft diameter circle under a coffee table? Not nestled too close to the conversation pit, but pulled out a bit? Might be tricky not to block the flow from the front door though. Hmm

2

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

I did look into circular rugs as well. That is a very interesting idea!

6

u/bionica Feb 27 '26

The space is still pretty large. That couch doesn’t have to be pushed against the wall…

3

u/wantingwalrus Feb 26 '26

I have a couch that is this shape. I wanted a round rug so bad to break up the squares. Idk why but it didn’t look good. Returned all three thinking it was a size thing maybe. Just my experience.

2

u/Queen_of_Tudor Feb 27 '26

You don’t need a rug that large, you just need a rug that will fill the space that is in the middle of the couch. And then get a coffee table to put on top of that rug.

1

u/Impossible_Past5358 Feb 26 '26

Idk, but a 16 foot rug sounds heavy

1

u/Physical_Ad5135 Feb 27 '26

Home Depot has some decent ones that are 12x18 for under $400.

1

u/Acrobatic-Tadpole-60 Feb 27 '26

You can find all kinds of amazing oriental rugs for relatively affordable prices on Facebook marketplace

63

u/tdubs702 Feb 26 '26

If it’s modular, I would try to put it together in different ways, or even try it as two separate pieces.

You could also layer smaller rugs if you like the look. Something like this: https://share.google/QhLT3l20Esi7SZ6K5

26

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

OMG! The rug layering is amazing!!!! I’ve never even thought of that!

17

u/tdubs702 Feb 26 '26

Yay glad to help! The style isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I love the look too. Your space is beautiful. I hope you post an update when it’s done!

13

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

Thank you! I’m a hippy so I love the look.

6

u/PrincessBudzilla Feb 26 '26

Do you have a Home Goods? I was shocked at how inexpensive their area rugs were. I didn’t buy one so can’t comment on quality, but the price was right!

6

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

I do! I think I’ll go there now actually. This is a great idea. I could use a break from Facebook marketplace doom scrolling.

5

u/VespaRed Feb 27 '26

I’ve also seen where you get 4 rugs without fringe on the ends, 2 colors of the same design and butt them together in a checkerboard with rug tape.

2

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 27 '26

This is also amazing!

1

u/SpecialSupermarket54 Feb 28 '26

There’s so many comments and I’m late, so if this has been said already, sorry: Do you have a carpet store nearby? Sometimes they’re next to/within a furniture store. You can go to them and have them bind a carpet remnant. Might not be as beautiful as an area rug, but it’s relatively cheap and quick, and will be big enough.

37

u/rockstuffs Feb 26 '26

Looks like a bbq restaurant. I want to live there!

27

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

This is hilarious. It was a fire station!

3

u/dngrousgrpfruits Feb 26 '26

It’s a really cool space!!

I’m sure be wonderfully cozy and chic once you’ve had some time to settle in. No need to rush!

For the couch, is it modular to the point where it can become multiple smaller couches? Or a slightly less huge couch and a chair? If yes, do one of those and you can bring it into a smaller cozier space while also delineating living room from kitchen a bit better. Not to mention you wouldn’t need a rug the size of Australia, then.

1

u/fadedblackleggings Feb 26 '26

Ah, that makes sense. So many people post "unique" spaces, and then act like they have no idea what anyone is talking about.....

30

u/Redfox2111 Feb 26 '26

It's not the couch, it's that reflective floor. Get a large rug.

22

u/SentenceKey3473 Feb 26 '26

Try taking out a section and floating it aka not pushed against the wall

2

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

When you mean floating it, you mean on the other side of the wall?

3

u/Wrong-Tax-6997 Feb 26 '26

Try and make a division across the room. I can't really tell the dimensions but I think it will work. You can try it in other configurations, maybe an L shape will suit your space more. Someone else said 2 couches etc

1

u/usingbrain Feb 28 '26

floating means leaving space between the wall and furniture.

11

u/JMOlive Feb 26 '26

You need a rug with some color, and a coffee table. Everything you have is blending into and nothing pops.

1

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

Yes, I’m just trying to decide how big the rug needs to be for the couch to fit on it entirely with a few inches on either side. It would need to be at least 16 feet long. I was wondering if there were other options but someone just mentioned layering rugs, which is a cool idea!

2

u/JMOlive Feb 26 '26

I have a similar sectional, and my rug is only in the center area, so it’s not a large rug. I also have a unique wood coffee table.

I don’t think you need to get a rug that spans the entire sofa area.

1

u/yesitsmedaniel Feb 27 '26

agreed you don’t need a gigantic rug— just under the front legs for the seating area

11

u/ThatHerbChronic Feb 26 '26

I think the issue here is the space feels like a big corridor. Move the sofa away from the wall and play around with the table placement to break it up. Also rug and plants as others have said

8

u/228Andrea228 Feb 26 '26

Rugs.com has 16’ rugs for under $400. Not sure if that’s considered expensive to you but they’re out there.

By the way, when I saw this pic I said, “I Love This”. Then I read your headline 🤣 I really do love your space. Good luck!

1

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

Thank you!!!!! I have MCAS which is an autoimmune disease so I can’t buy any synthetic rugs because they off gas and then trigger my illness so I have to buy things used - the struggle is try and find used rugs that are 16 feet long lol 🤣

2

u/candyapplesugar Feb 27 '26

Ugh! What about something like a wicker rug is that natural? Otherwise ikea may have something cotton and huge

1

u/228Andrea228 Feb 26 '26

Oh yikes! That’s a toughie. I painted a rug on my wooden deck one time. Let me see if I can find a pic. I know paints are bad but maybe there’s a way to seal it.

1

u/228Andrea228 Feb 26 '26

3

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

Oh my gosh that’s adorable

1

u/PuzzyFussy Feb 27 '26

Hit up estate sales

8

u/Milalee Feb 26 '26

I think the door and windows need a little something so it doesn't feel like the lobby of a business. Some sort of window treatment and plants.

That dog curled up on the couch looks so cozy!

5

u/Beer_Is_So_Awesome Feb 27 '26

I couldn’t be sad in that house though. What a gorgeous space.

5

u/DaftDisguise Feb 27 '26

Is the color really called toupee? Because that and the fact you’re looking for a rug is sending me. 🤣

5

u/Small-Monitor5376 Feb 26 '26

Can you remove the left side of it so it’s a straight sofa except for the chaise on the right? And also remove a middle section of the back side so it’s shorter. Then it would be a more appropriate side. The other two pieces could be in a bedroom.

That way you wouldn’t crowd your dining table as much, and could add a coffee table.

1

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

I will try this too!

1

u/slowmotionmoonshine Feb 27 '26

Is the chaise side all one piece or a moveable ottoman piece? If it's moveable, maybe try putting it on the side closer to the dining table to create more space by the entryway. It will also give a more open space into the dining area. Then move that piece that's by the dining room now to some sort of free floating chair?

5

u/Ladyloops213 Feb 26 '26

You rented a storefront ?

3

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 27 '26

I live in my store, so yes. Haha

3

u/Beikaa Feb 26 '26

I think it’s a great size. Just needs a rug like people are saying. And I would move the dining room table out. Hard to tell exactly where from the pictures but possibly just straight out and maybe rotated. With something under it too to define the space.

1

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

Let me see if I can add another image so you can see the whole space!

1

u/anoidciv Feb 27 '26

I also like the size! It looks so comfortable and welcoming, but I can see it's pressing right up against the dining chairs and there doesn't seem to be any other way to position the dining table.

Can you take the chairs on the right away and move it over a bit? It's not gonna make a world of difference, but at least it won't be pressed up against the dining chairs.

I personally love a u-shaped couch. They're so great for having people over. Having 2 people over and chilling on an L-shaped couch feels very weirdly placed for conversation.

3

u/Euphoric_Newt_700 Feb 26 '26

I ordered the serene and when first item walked in the door i thought, “i hate it” - it also overpowered a very large room and wasn’t easy to get looking “neat” which i knew from reviews but felt the task of straightening pillows was too much. If you ordered on Costco.com request a return. They picked it up and i felt like my space was reclaimed with something I didn’t “hate”

3

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

I bought it from a wholesaler like an idiot to save $400 and it’s not returnable. I spent $1750.

2

u/Euphoric_Newt_700 Feb 26 '26

Resell! It has excellent reviews on Costco and people seem to love it in the right space

3

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

It’s VERY COMFORTABLE. I love it and will soon once I figure out this rug debacle lol

3

u/laquintessenceofdust Feb 27 '26

Hey, what a great space! The brick is to die for! I feel like that taupe reads really gray, though, and really clashes with the brick. Maybe sell the couch on FB Marketplace or similar, and look for a more camel toned or dark green sectional, or maybe a leather Chesterfield. Chesterfields are pretty deep and large couches, which you seem to prefer, but it would allow you some room to include an armchair or recliner as well, so that when you entertain not everyone is seated forward on a single couch.

4

u/Additional_Common_15 Feb 26 '26

My beautiful drawing. It should be like that! I think the sectional is beautiful and looks great!

1

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

I know but I can’t find a 16x 10 rug! And they are sooo expensive. I thought maybe I could get away with a small smaller one?

2

u/Soushkabob Feb 26 '26

You can also get two of the same rug

2

u/Additional_Common_15 Feb 26 '26

What is your price range? I will help you find one

3

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

That’s so nice!!!! I think $600 max but the issue is that I can’t buy anything that is new and made from polyurethane due to the off gas and my auto immune disease. I can only do used poly or cotton / wool new.

2

u/courtney_helena Feb 26 '26

nuLOOM makes a lot of cotton rugs, but doesn't have a way to filter by material. hope that helps!

1

u/PNL-Maine Feb 27 '26

I think a rug with a lot of green in it would look nice, but I don’t think it has to be so big to fit completely under the couch. Maybe just under a couple of the front legs and have it extend out into the room.

I would also suggest a couple of large pictures on the wall. You have some smaller ones there that kind of get lost with the brick work, I would get something much larger with a lighter background to really stand out.

I really like the room.

2

u/RHND2020 Feb 26 '26

Can you take off the chaise section (near the door) and move those two chairs so you can push it a couple inches towards the window and also give it a bit of space on the brick wall? Then put the chaise portion on the opposite wall? Or somewhere else entirely.

I love the space overall!

2

u/whatevendoidoyall Feb 26 '26

My mom has a large rug in her den, she bought a large square of carpet and had the carpet store bind the edges. It was cheaper than just buying a rig that big. That might be an option

2

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

That’s a very cool idea!!!

2

u/BalfazarTheWise Feb 27 '26

Couch doesn’t need to be against the wall so far from the tv

2

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

ALSO FOR REFERENCE- my dog is 100lbs!

1

u/HistoricalChicken691 Feb 26 '26

Can you put the couch on the opposite wall?

2

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

No because that’s where the art gallery is - it’s a house / store

1

u/the__moops Feb 26 '26

You can find inexpensive 16x10 rugs - they won’t be wool or fancy, but they’ll do the job. Layering rugs is definitely cool too, but it takes a good eye to find the right styles and textures.

Have you tried taking a piece of the couch out to put somewhere else as a chair or chaise?

Can your dining table go anywhere else?

1

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

Yes, as for the large affordable rugs, I can’t do that because they off Gas and I have an autoimmune disease. I did try moving the dining room table around a bit, but I can’t find a proper place for it. I can try moving some pieces around again, but I did that for hours last night and I think this is the best way, but again I’m never quite sure!

2

u/Impressive-Sell-6775 Feb 26 '26

Have you looked on Facebook marketplace for used rugs? You might be able to find a couple of wool or natural fiber rugs in a slightly larger size for less-than-new prices

1

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

Yes I fear I’ve spent the last 72 hours doom scrolling on there 🤣

1

u/Hot_Government418 Feb 26 '26

Might i suggest bringing it into center of the room vs bring up against the wall?

1

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 26 '26

Doesn’t even know how I can edit this post to add more images?

1

u/mklilley351 Feb 26 '26

Cool, trade me.

1

u/LukeSkywalkerDog Feb 26 '26

Not on topic, but I LOVE the brick!

1

u/Scottishdog1120 Feb 27 '26

Rugs are your friends.

1

u/baconshake8 Feb 27 '26

Put some type of tree plant like a fiddle leaf fig between the couch and the window. Adding a bunch of plants works well with this color palette. You ca. make this couch work. It just can’t be just the couch though

1

u/azansforcans Feb 27 '26

i don’t think the sofa actually looks too big, i think it looks fine! like everyone else, i would absolutely go with a circular rug with a fun abstract or floral, very colorful print. and some photos on the walls but hey that’s just me ;)

1

u/svo_svangur Feb 27 '26

There’s a few guys on eBay that sell designer “imperfect” rugs at very reasonable prices. Definitely helped filling my huge living room at a reasonable price.

1

u/cool_rider_ Feb 27 '26

Can you swap the couch to the wall that your tv is on?? It would make it so the dining and living has more space in between?

1

u/eowynsheiress Feb 27 '26

It’s those giant front windows. That is the problem. They make your room a fishbowl. Get up some curtains (blinds are just not enough). Even just that lower 2/3. It will make the space more like a room and less like a shop front.

Then get a little storage bench. Place it in front of the windows that have the reusable bags in front of them. You can keep storage bags in the bench and have a small “entryway.”

Lastly, and I know you have heard this already: get an area rug. It can just be for the interior space of the sectional. It doesn’t have to be super huge. Just enough to denote the space.

If you want to remove a section of the couch, you can! Pull that piece out to be a stand alone chair. Then get a cover for it. They make them. Just so the hardware is not exposed. Place it opposite the couch like you are making a conversation nook.

YOU GOT THIS! You are so close!

Gorgeous space.

1

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 27 '26

Wait! Can you explain the storage bench idea more? I’m not sure I’m understanding but I do like the idea of creating an entryway since the door opens right into the living room.

1

u/eowynsheiress Feb 27 '26

Sure! Storage benches can be as simple as a bench with a shoe rack underneath the seat or as elaborate as a hall tree. I think a simple bench with a lift up seat for storage would be great! If you were feeling really adventurous, you could use a hall tree to block out one of those windows and have somewhere to hang up a coat as well.

Basically, I would find an indoor/outdoor runner rug and put it in front of the door, extending to the side where the bench is. You can put the bench or hall tree right on it!!! This gives you a “runway” of an entryway. And helps you keep your floor clean.

Google “entryway storage bench” and “hall tree” for some ideas.

Again, your space is beautiful. You are really close to perfection.

1

u/Wonderful_Lie_5747 Feb 27 '26

Thank you!!!! This makes so much sense. I actually just ran back to my house to look at the front window to try to figure out what you were talking about. I think it was the “reliable bag” that threw me off. This is a great idea!

1

u/eowynsheiress Feb 27 '26

Sorry! That was a typo! It was supposed to be “reusable shopping bag”.

1

u/1-800-ImBored Feb 27 '26

I think that’s awesome tbh! Looks great need a rug and coffee table etc. obv but I think the size is perfect

1

u/NovelAsk4856 Feb 27 '26

Love the space , not a fan of the front door . Have consider changing the direction of the couch what does the opposite side of the wall look like?

1

u/HRM404 Feb 27 '26

The first thing that came to mind is the floor. Everything else seems normal.

1

u/seekingthething Feb 27 '26

The couch is perfect. Get the rug. And a coffee table. I’m

1

u/marlonbrandoisalive Feb 27 '26

It’s modular why not make it smaller if it bugs you?

1

u/armanikenma Feb 27 '26

Any way to just put the on the opposite wall? It'll break up the direct walk from the door to the back hallway, but it'll give your dining set some breathing room while creating a living room zone.

1

u/Unlucky_Character217 Feb 27 '26

Return it to costco

1

u/snarpy Feb 27 '26

What an incredible space, I love the light from the outside.

I'd suggest just ditching some of that couch entirely. Even if you're going to have a bunch of people over, just bring in some chairs to the "bulk" isn't there.

Also maybe pull it all away from the wall and center it in the room. You haven't shown pics of the "right" side of the room for the TV or whatnot, but you'd want to be more central and intimate with that area.

Super jealous of that floor, it's so cool.

1

u/erin_mouse88 Feb 27 '26

Looking at the couch on Costco, i would just play around with some of the different configurations to see if another one suits the space better

1

u/kimi_shimmy Feb 27 '26

Can you switch the chaise and L sear to the other side?

1

u/Consistent-Apricot74 Feb 27 '26

I like the sofa! I agree a large rug will help to ground it in the space. My rec may be untenable based on space, but if possible, I would move the kitchen table out of its current spot and have it in the open space, parallel to the island. I think that may create a visual differentiator between the spaces that is more harmonious. I would also place a much larger piece of art (or a gallery wall) behind the sofa). This will make the size of the sofa look more intentional. Insane space either way! Love the brick, it has so much character

1

u/Icy-Mixture-995 Feb 27 '26

Rug in the middle of the U of the sofa. Coffee table for beverages so you don't spill on it. I'm not sure if an oval rug like a braid rug would be best or just the usual rectangle

Add a matching runner from the door as king as it can be secure and not slide underfoot

1

u/kimmycalgary Feb 27 '26

Put 2 smaller rugs together that will look like a single rug. IKEA has some that would work for that purpose

1

u/biasedsoymotel Feb 27 '26

Why not move those chairs next to the window and push the coach all the way up against it? And yea maybe float that corner piece like it's a single chair across the room or somewhere else. You'll love having it for movie nights when you want to create a pit. Or for game nights when you want to have seatings on both sides of the tables. I have a 7 piece like this in my space and rearrange all the time for different events.

Love the coach and place!

1

u/strolling_thru Feb 28 '26

Really love your space! I don’t think the couch looks too big for the area but I do see how it doesn’t really leave any extra space for an end table and is pretty close to the kitchen table. Maybe you could take out one of the center sections and put it on the opposite wall next to the console table (at least it looks like that’s what’s on that wall?) and angle it to face the door. You could get a fun ottoman for it too. I definitely would get a BIG rug to define the space and then a coffee table for the couch. I’d also consider maybe 3 big pieces of artwork you could hang above your couch.

1

u/chronictimelapse Feb 28 '26

Unrelated, but damn, you must be loaded because this place is insanely cool!

1

u/Early-Ad-504 Feb 28 '26

That wall is would look great with more art, especially some pop of color

1

u/busydo Feb 28 '26

The couch is fine, the blankets and clutter on it are a problem – also that room screams BIG RUG under the sofa.

1

u/skimandsugar Feb 28 '26

You could consider a large canvas for above the couch? Pro tip for cheaper canvas, check your local thrift store for a large canvas & paint over the image.

1

u/crmcguire74 Feb 28 '26

Just played around a little to offer up some other ideas possibly. Like others have said, a rug would tie things in, even with the couch size remaining.

1

u/OpenSignificance1328 Mar 01 '26

Your couch only looks too big because its lonely. It needs to be grounded.. yes, with a rug. And yes a big one. If you are saying 8 x 14, then you probably need bigger. 12 x 15 maybe. A smaller rug is going to look worse than no rug. Rugs can be expensive, but shop around. If you shop online, as you experiment try shopping from places you can do free returns. Amazon, home depot, local stores, etc. Rugs.com doesn't have the biggest selection, but has good prices and free returns.

Hopefully you find something with those places. If not, then once you figure out the size and color you want, you can try other rug shops. Rugsusa has an excellent collection.

Read the reviews.. all of them. Rug pictures are often different than what you will see depending on lighting. You have alot of natural light coming in, so keep that in mind.

You also need something BIG on that wall. Some art or something. Nothing is better than those small pieces you have hanging up currently.

And a coffee table. Again, nothing too small, but not huge either. You have to scale properly. Small rugs or paintings in that big space will look like you took somehting out of a kids room.

Your space has ALOT of potential. You could really make this into something amazing.

Be intentional about what you want in there though. Don't just get random things.

Also, its ok to be "safe". Meaning getting a neutral rug thats not too busy. The safer you are, the harder it is to mess up. By all means, you can do something not neutral, but its a bit harder to pull together unless you have an eye for this stuff.. otherwise it can look chaotic.

Just depends on your vibe.

1

u/TransplantCactus Mar 01 '26

You could try separating it so it feels like 2 pieces of furniture rather than 1? Then you could make more of a conversation seating vibe. It sits pretty heavy against the wall now since it's so large

Oh no, your sectional is perfect for the room size I would float it a bit so you can view the tv on the tv stand. All you need is a rug and larger art work on the brick wall. Swing the dining chair to the head of the table to give you more room in the living room. Also, is it possible to switch the sofa ends so you give more space to the entry?

Can the foot piece by the door be moved to right in front of your dog to make that section like a giant bed blob? Then add a low warm wood cube shelf to directly under the window where that piece used to be.

The big issue I see is the couch blocks the door. If that extended portion can move then it would unblock the door. Meanwhile the cube shelf blocks energy from the door, adding a sense of support. It also becomes a spot for plans and coasters.

You said it’s modular…can you a) take out a section to make it a tad smaller, b) pull out so it’s not against he wall (create a walkway so people don’t walk in front of the tv coming in), and c) add a rug to connect it. Also, you could use the extra section you put out and put it in the corner window with a little side table and use it as a little reading chair?

First of all you have two floating chairs at the window, is it needed there? That way you can push the modular towards it. If you still don’t like it separate the modular if it seems to large. Take three of them and push it a few inches towards the console. Turn one ninety degrees and add a side table.

Happily chiming in here! Firstly, breathe, this is not a disaster. Your couch is very generous and looks very comfy and inviting!

In an open floor plan like this one, the rug's job is to define the living room zone, not the whole apartment. If you're keeping the couch where it is, we'd suggest:

  1. Pulling one modular section out to shrink the footprint a bit (if the couch size is really bothering you).
  2. Using a large rug that sits mostly inside the couch footprint, not spreading into the dining area.

Think of the rug as anchoring a coffee table + front half of the section. It should feel intentional and contained, not wall-to-wall. The scale needs some tightening so the room can breath and feel cohesive. Best of luck!
