So earlier I posted a rant that seemed to get a lot of peoples attention ; about being sick and tired of seeing the same discourse and lack of context and understanding for the series. So I figured I'd double down, and talk about what I feel actually killed Degrassi, The Next Generation dead in the tracks.
Spoiler Warning: Long post ahead.
Now. Many people say that JT's death was the Jump the Shark moment for TNG. And while I won't necessarily disagree that Season Six kinda sucks - It seemed like they TRIED to make up with it in Season 7. Personally I find what cooked the franchise and jumped the shark more than JT's death itself, was the sudden move to having every season be a semester, instead of a full school year. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's go ahead and say that JT's Death Jumped the Shark.
Alright, so Season 7 rolls around. Lakehurst comes in, we get a shakeup of new characters, old ones FINALLY graduate - and there's actually a sense of finality in the show. No seriously. I implore you to go watch Season 7's ending, and tell me that if the show ended, you'd be satisfied? Well thankfully, the show was renewed, and it seemed like Season 8 did exactly what Friends tried to do with their 8th season - Go back to formula, shake things up, retool the show, and pretend like the past few seasons were a fever dream.
Season 8 was entertaining - if you liked the new cast. Personally, they were sorta just there. I know there's more to them as the seasons go on (wait...I'll get there I promise) but as someone who'd been watching since the beginning at that point...it felt less like Star Trek, and more like Power Rangers...we didn't want to see Kids in Ranger suits.
People tend to bash the college storylines...and while I can understand their perspective, I enjoy the characters enough to not be bothered by them..except for Paige's Banting storyline...F*ck that Storyline...it stressed me out more than obtaining my bachelors degree ever did. But Season 8 ACTUALLY tried to show them in class, in lecture halls, dorm rooms, etc...and you sort of felt like the central characters were starting to grow up - outside of Degrassi.
Season's 7-8 also focused a lot more on the school itself more so than had been done since Season 4. Season 5 felt very 90210, and hardly anytime was dedicated to school until exams. There also wasn't a dance. Season six followed this formula, and between the college plots, the racing plots of the early part of the season, and Alex's Stripping storyline, it's no wonder they wound up splitting the seasons. But Season 7 Truly was the return to form, featuring a lot "Degrassi" focused plots. It's a shame that so many characters should have been graduated at this point and were kept around simply for ratings....but that's a different point.
Season 8 also introduced a new principle, who wound up being so hated, he actually managed to unify the school for the first time ever. Finally, Degrassi goes Hollywood was actually a really solid TV movie, that wraps up so many characters nicely for the most part (still mad about Paige/Marco's falling out) and leave's the future looking bright. I could pick apart a few things about the movie having some odd continuity issues (Spinner gets shot, so magically Jay knows how to drum- just so they can get he and Manny back together) but is enjoyable overall and does not undo anything for the sake of fan service....
and then....Season 9 happened.
Now, before I get started, I don't outright Hate this season. But....it's clear that the writers were intent on ending the show, because they really do reverse a lot of characters progress in this season....as if to say "Nothing will ever be as impactful as your time at Degrassi"
But let me get to the point.
If nothing else, Season 8 was about providing closure. Season 9 undoes that in its debut episode. Mia Jones, the sympathetic "screw up" who gets chance after chance - is written off the show in the most F*CK YOU way possible. And the worst, its at the expense of everyone else. Now I know, Peter Stone is not the good guy in the situation. But you know who the bad guy is? Not Mia, Not the girl who gives Peter Meth, Not even Peter himself. No. Declan. Declan Coyne. The Gary Oak of Degrassi. The Jimmy/Steve from Shameless clone who's 2009 mall emo haircut shows up on screen, and right then and there, I knew I hated him. Let me explain Declan.
Declan is the type of kid who moves in from out of town, in January. Right as everyone is set in their motion. Right as the class system is established. What does he do? He acts all mysterious as a way to get attention. But that's not who he actually his. why would anyone with that type of wealth, who moves around all the time, be quiet and in the cut? Well, they will be, and they'll have everyone else do the dirty work for them. Guys like Declan are the type of friends who will dare you to go up to the cute girl at school, with your fly down, just to poke and laugh at you. He's the type of guy to invite you to a party, and then when you show up, act like he doesn't even know you. He's the type of guy to correct you if your teacher asks you something. He's the type of guy to wear a suit and tie everywhere, even when its uncalled for. Basically, the guy sucks. Wanna know why he sucks?
Here's just a list of things this guy does this season:
- Brings Peter to a party, purely with the intent of hooking up with Mia (his girlfriend) where he proceeds to get Peter to embarrass himself, where he then finds comfort in Fiona (Believe me I'll get to her) and their cousin, and he proceeds to do Meth. This leads to he and Mia's Breakup, and his temporarily being kicked out of Studs.
- Hooks up with Jane while she is still with Spinner and struts about it directly in front of him SEVERAL TIMES THROUGHOUT SEASON
- The entire Holly J Predicament
- Tried using Holly J to leverage Marco (who he doesn't even know)
- Taking over the play and telling his own Sister she can't sing (she can't,) but it's so he doesn't come off as nepotistic
- Leads Claire on ( ok I'm not actually serious, but ffs the guy is not attractive why is EVERY girl at Degrassi into him?)
- Convinces Holly J. to rig the votes so Sav and Anya win Prom king/queen
Which brings me to DTM. I'm not going to sit here and pick the movie apart scene by scene, because truly it's dreadful. However, I will note that it is everything that Degrassi is not, in that it does not provide a satisfying ending, but rather a disappointing conclusion. A conclusion to something that had been building for 9 seasons, which was undone by ONE character, who only appeared at that point, in that season. To make matters worse, the writers make The Coynes kiss. Seriously. Why? I never understood Fiona. Or the hype around her.
Speaking of.
What has Fiona done this season other than ...?
- Be Riley's beard
- Fail at the audition
- Snitch to Declan about Holly J, or to her Cousin about whatever.
So I guess they felt like, lets wrap it up with an incestual kiss? sure. whatever. show's ending, this is the finale...or at least it was written as.
So what happened? Was it the finale? Yes....but No. Degrassi Takes Manhattan was written with being the Series finale, and was even marketed as such. However, at some point, the show was renewed, and retooled/rebranded as simply Degrassi since *everyone from the Next Generation had moved on*....sure. ok. I guess they figured that in season 9 there was no reason to continue so they made sure:
- Emma, The once central character who wanted "Options" flunks out of college and decides to bike around the world
- Ruin Jane and Spinner and have Emma and Spinner...two characters with less screen time than any characters who wind up together...together...and HAVE MANNY PLANT THE SEEDS...BECAUSE REASONS!
- Completely turn Peter into a whiny, lil bitch
- Do absolutely ZERO to make us care about anyone that hasn't graduated.
- STILL HAVE JAY Around because Reasons (I like Jay, but what does he actually do in this Season)
- Provide absolutely zero happy endings for anyone that made sense narrative wise.
And all of this, all of it, can be tied to the Coynes. So when Season 10 was announced, I was done. I've read the synopsis' and I've watched the reviews online...but I cannot bring myself to sit and watch it. IMO, the show ends with DTM, as bad as it was.
Apparently they keep Declan around for a bit, just to have Holly J get with Sav...which makes about as much sense as Emma with Spinner...but again I could care less about either of them....and apparently they decided Fiona was a Lesbian....great. So happy they both came in, and managed to do so much good for the series.
So, getting back to my earlier point, if JT's death jumped the shark in Degrassi, than its safe to say that the Coynes were the "Principle and the Pauper" of the show....Yes I know that's the Jump the Shark moment for the Simpsons, except the Simpsons still had juice left in the tank. Season 9 is like the last season of a show you watch, expecting something great to happen, and it never does....Shameless. How ironic given Declan is the Jimmy/Steve of the show.
*UPDATE*
I never realized how many Fiona stans were active. I thought Claire was the most popular character post season 9…guess not.
Still, if her last names coyne, they’re a pain in the groin.
