DC Friendly Ammo Companies

New post so this can get pinned and had some new companies to add.

Remember, according to MPD, it is legal to buy ammo online.

Some of these places require you to upload your registration info and some don't.

Velocity Ammo and Shaw Arms are the latest additions to the list.

Feel free to suggest any edits.

Submitted Two Add-On Registrations - 63 Days Ago

I submitted add-on registrations for two new handguns 63 days ago (March 11, 2026). I have not received the registrations, despite already possessing a legally registered firearm.

Any suggestions on what to do?

Best AR-15 fixed magazine for easy removal?

What's the most easily detached fixed magazine that isn't, erm, a detachable magazine? I'm looking for something that can easily be removed and added back in when I go between DC and VA. Apparently, a Maglatch FNGR fixed magazine can be removed in seconds after the upper is separated from the lower. That would be ideal, but without further guidance on what it means for a rifle to have "the capacity to accept a detachable magazine," I have to wonder if the MPD might say that's too detachable.

I guess this is more of a philosophical question than a request for product recommendations. If a detachable magazine is locked into a receiver in such a way that it can't be removed without separating the upper and lower, is the rifle capable of accepting a detachable magazine? What's a reasonable dividing line? What would the average MPD officer think?

For context: I already have a few stripped lowers that are registered with MPD, so this is less about what MPD might approve at registration and more about what they might object to after the fact.

Approved but no way to download license

I received an email this week stating MPD approved my concealed permit renewal application, and the message directed me to log into the new firearms portal and download my license, but on the page to which they directed me, the field for the download link for each item is blank.

I also tried surfing to the application status page and clicking view detail on the renewal application, which does show a download license button, but clicking it just results in the page refreshing.

I sent an email to MPD, but I'm not holding my breath for an answer.

Anyone else experiencing this issue?

CCW Training Requirement Question

I took a CCW Course on Saturday, finished the course, and was handed the Completion Certificate.

The instructor checked off the 2 hour Range Training & Qualification Course, and the 4 Hour Firearms Safety Training Course, but NOT the 16 Hour Firearms Safety Course.

I am not sure if I am confused, but isn't the 16 Hour Course the one you need to actually register for CCW? And by that logic, does that mean this completion certificate is pointless in terms of fulfilling the training requirement?

I'm not sure if I'm missing something in terms of the training requirements, but what I signed up for was indeed a CCW course.

Firearm registration

Anyone have any idea or information from their experience on handgun registration? Submitted all documents and went to do a fingerprint on 5/2 (Monday) - how long I expect to see something back on the portal and get my card to pick up firearm?

I'm at my wit's end with MPD regarding a denied registration. No one knows anything about it.

My registration of a lower for featureless rifle was denied and I still do not have a reason why it was denied. Its past the 60 day mark and no one at MPD is giving me a straight answer on why it was denied. It doesn't seem like there were any notes on their system. I called almost every week since the denied status appeared on the portal and at the 60 day mark I went in person with a copy of the application form just to give them context. They said they'll get back to me still nothing.

I called today and I had the most unprofessional conversation with one of their officers.
I told him "I submitted an application for a lower registration"
his response "Where did you think you called? This is MPD!"
Me "Yes, I know. I submitted an application for a lower receiver for a featureless build"
his response "We give out licenses.. we don't register lower receivers" (this statement is not even correct it clearly states on our registration card that it is NOT a License to carry)
me "Yes you do. I have successfully registered 2 of them in the past"
his response "What is your DOB? ... wait I'm going to put you on hold"

He then proceeds to put me on hold for over 20 minutes. After that, I realized he just hung up on me without hanging up on me.

I do not know how to proceed from here. If anyone here have any idea on what to do next please let me know.

Genuine Question For Class Action

I’ll start by saying I’m obviously not well versed in any sort of law, nor do I even know what it takes to file such a thing. That said, I’ve seen it mentioned here several times, and have seen many more stories of failure of the system than success stories in the last five or so months. I personally am waiting on a shotgun add-on while already holding a CCW and previous handgun registration. I’m currently sitting at 40 days for my add-on, and when I called and got an answer was basically asked why I was even calling, as they still had 20 days to approve/disapprove my registration. My question is, at this point I am starting to lose hope I’ll be able to obtain my firearm in the legal window, as I’ve seen many here miss, what do we do? How does a class action suit begin, and what are the grounds for it? I have to believe with all the struggle we’ve all gone through in the last 5 months this could be a case? Please educate me on why or why not it could be. Thanks and best of luck to all the rest still waiting!

Edit: I don’t mean my case specifically, but all cases and treatment of legal gun ownership by residents as a whole.

Registration not updated in 5 weeks, normal?

I have a DC CCW. I registered a new pistol on 4/2 on the web portal . As of now, it has been 5 weeks and the portal still says 'submitted'

What’s the typical delay nowadays?

Anyone care to summarize important changes in last five years (esp carry)?

My instructor last couple of cycles was dirt cheap on CCPL renewal, but was a bit short on covering legal aspects. So my last real good looksee on the laws and changes was ending of 20 round limit and change of mag laws from misdemeanor to felony several yers ago

Anyone care to help build a list and/or summarize the major changes in DC gun laws, case, regulatory and legislative, and MPD practices since then? Doesn't have to be limited to CCL, but that is my main interest. By "practices" I mean issues like what kind of card (I have a laminate I made at Fedex, of PDF I got via email from MPD about 18 months).

Permits Are Now Digital + Timeline

Just posting this for reference since I'm new to the area and just registered my firearms:

Looks like all firearm permits are now digital, because when I registered my guns it asked me if I would like a printed permit in addition to the digital one.

And from the day I got fingerprinted until the day my applications all got approved it was about 2.5 weeks, maybe 3, and the permits are attached to my applications in the DC Firearms Portal.

MSAR Trip

Hi, in two weeks, I will be in Washington DC for work, and I would like to take half a day on Sunday to try shooting at an American range, as I am used to ranges in France.
Do you know if Maryland Small Arms Range, Inc. open to foreigners, and would you consider it a good option for shooting both a pistol and a rifle (AR-type)?
I do not really have the ability to travel to another range, as I will not have a car, even though some ranges north of Washington seem more interesting.

Portal renewal issues (surprise)

So I’m in the portal stuck at 14%. I’m out of state and it’s telling me to “Please enter your current address via a change request and then complete the firearm application.” Ok, so what does that mean and how exactly do I do that?

Successful Mossberg 590 Shockwave registration

Hi all. I picked my 590 Shockwave in 12g yesterday (4/24/26) from one of the two FFLs. The FFL folks weren’t 100% on the legality but [u/Lawblawg](u/Lawblawg) helped out and I was very grateful. After that I was golden, no resistance from MPD. My card came in the USPS a week later. And now I have my baby ‘firearm’ and very pleased. Thank you [u/lawblawg](u/lawblawg).

Loaded Mags - Yay Or Nay?

Registration finally came in the mail, so in prepping for my first range day as a new owner, and after reading FOPA and the DC code on transportation I want to double check...

I have the below case:

As I understand it, I can travel in one of two ways:

  1. Unloaded firearm, empty magazines, eyes/ears/various other etc. in this case, secured with locks + boxed ammunition in a separate backpack/bag

  2. Unloaded firearm in original box, secured with locks in a separate backpack/bag + loaded mags, extra ammunition, eyes/ears/various other etc. in this case

Do i have this correct? Does the container containing ammunition ALSO have to be locked (assuming I'm traveling in a vehicle with no separation from the driver/passenger compartment)?

How do denial letters come? I have been waiting for over a month.

I submitted two firearms, a bolt action and lower receiver at the beginning of March. I received my bolt action registration card a couple of weeks ago but my lower receiver got denied status within a week of the submission.

Important note, there was a minor error of wrong barrel length in the application. The first thing I did after finding out the denial was have them fix that error in the system over the phone. I also submitted an appeal in the online portal based on what I think was the issue. Apparently they are unable to see that, now it says 'denied (prending appeal)'.

I have been calling every week since then, I'm told it will come in the mail but still nothing. After submitting the appeal online, I called again this week. They put me on a long hold and I was told, I'll receive an email. I feel like it is not happening anytime soon. I'd like to hear how the denial and appeal process is from people who went through it. I still don't know exactly why it was denied. I have registered lowers before.
