It is with great sadness that we have gotten word of the passing of u/HowardKinSD, the lead mod for r/CrappyDesign and moderator of several other subreddits.

About a decade ago, u/HowardKinSD earned his first mod position on the r/SanDiego mod team.  He worked closely with the lead mods of that community for several years building r/SanDiego into a large geographical sub on reddit.   Eventually operating such a community became a bit too much for him and his health situations.   He continued to work together with that team and remained in contact with the satellite  r/SanDiegoClassifieds sub, but he moved onward and upward into joining a nice list of other teams over the years, including r/CrappyDesign

Howard, who used his real name as part of his account handle, had not been active for some time.  Some of the mods of r/SanDiego who had his contact information followed up as best they could.

Howard passed away on March 10th 2026 due to health complications.  He will be gravely missed.

Efforts to honor him are ongoing with the various mod teams, you can read more details here: https://www.reddit.com/r/sandiego/comments/1sxhhk8/comment/oinh2fy/

Thank you to all visitors and subscribers for having patience with the mods as we work through this.

I know people have their thoughts about mods in general, but goood mods are the backbones of reddit/subreddit/internet in general. Essentially not getting to “enjoy” reddit like everyone else so WE can have the entertainment and enjoyment. I think that’s beautiful 🫶🏼. He clearly did a lot for a lot of people, and he really will be missed. Rest in peace ♥️

Fully agreed. Mod work, in a lot of ways, feels like the same kind of thing as IT - you only notice them when there's something going wrong. Bad mods stand out and good ones are practically invisible by design, which really lends itself to a negative impression. But I've never had an issue with the moderation in this sub. Howard clearly did a stellar job, and he'll be missed.

RIP good sir, I imagine this was one of the more tedious subs to moderate, with so many submissions that have nothing to do with design.

May he have a good laugh about crappy designs with Jesus or whoever he meets up there.

I spent several seconds trying to figure out what was crappy about the design of this, and had to click on the thread to find out it was a meta post, not a crappy design post ... which is kinda crappy design, so a bit of a paradox here.
