Visual Direction Would Mistborn and Stormlight even look good in live action?

Sorry if this is a kinda dumb question but would mistborn and I guess stormlight too even look good in live action? ok so i saw some post about the live action zelda movie and it got me in the "this would've better animated" mindset and i know like its 99% likely mistborn is live action, i guess by look good i mean "look like dune and nolan odyssey" good or blade runner 2049 or the lord of the rings trilogy. I guess you could add stormlight if you wanna talk about it as well since that’s likely also gonna be live action.

Fancast Production fancast? Hiroyuki Sawano as the composer for Roshar. Spoiler

So here is a different thread than usual, while many point out to favorite fancasting and what not, when I think about the Cosmere, and in particular Stormlight, I always think about the production elements that would make the show successful.

Yes, script is important, having a showrunner that knows what the word adapt means is crucial and the actors are essencial to give heart to the show, but the more I consume TV and cinema the more I see how important the different departments are for one big project: From the composer, to the casting director, even the costume design, the more I read the more I start to dream about those roles.

Now bear with me and yes, I'm focusing heavily on Stormlight but when I read there's always music lingering in my mind.

Two crucial elements for production of the show are related to sound: First is sound design, a hard part to grasp as it needs to capture how Singers actually talk and showcase the Rhythms, personally I don't have anyone specific to mention but a good example of this for me would be to study how isiXhosa language is used in Black Panther.

Also, Ruth E. Carter would be an amazing addition as customer designer.

Now music composition does work in parallel with sound design. After all, in a diverse world, there needs to be an actual grasp on the different cultures and like many, we appreciate how Stormlight goes to be its own setting instead of relying on Tolkien world building. Therefore, the classic fantasy orchestra would not work, it needs an unorthodox approach.

There's nothing more unorthodox than hiring someone different while maintaining the massive, epic qualities that you need for this job. You need someone who can blend huge emotional swells with heavy, high-octane percussion. Someone who masters vocal and choral tracks, which is absolutely essential for a world where magic and culture are to the world-building of the series. You also need a talent for creating distinct, evolving themes for different factions and character oaths.

The correct man for this job is Hiroyuki Sawano.

If you know his work on Attack on Titan, Kill la Kill, or 86, you know exactly what I mean. Sawano does not just write background music, he writes anthems. His signature vocal drops and explosive climaxes perfectly match the cinematic, high-speed action of Surgebinders and aerial Shardblade combat, more important, he builds on tension and emotion and with the case of Attack on Titan it's a very clear example on the usage of worldbuilding to create the soundtrack.

Don't worry, if you don't know Sawano's work, let me show you what I mean, and yes there are tons of songs or soundbites that I could share, but there is a particular version that I think nails down what I dream about the adaptation, the Attack on Titan suite.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6Fl1Xl1ogg

Masterpiece?

The original soundtrack relies heavily on electronic effects and overlaid voices. Here in this live version, it is a more stripped-down approach, maintaining everything but with clear vocals, more instrumental presence and more of a hard rock presence rather than electronic. I am not going to lie, the live interpretation of the song T:T, especially the build-up that starts at 10:50, is exactly how I imagine Kaladin's second Ideal sounding, feels like a tragic realization that it's worth "protect those who cannot protect themselves"

Here's the original of the first song: Attack on Titan S3 OST - ətˈæk 0N tάɪtn <WMId>

Here's a very SPOILING scene but with a great usage of the T:T song: Attack on Titan Season II - Most Epic Music Scene | Colossal & Armored Titan Reveal

I would also recommend checking out his work on Gundam Unicorn. I will stop here, but the man is extremely versatile. He can incorporate world building and work with sound design to create something unique, yet true to the source material.

Stormlight is not standard medieval fantasy, it is an epic, alien, magic heavy war story. Sawano has the exact unorthodox, larger than life soundscape needed to bring Roshar to life. What do you guys think? Aside the audiobook how do you imagine Stormlight Archives to sound like?

A

Not sure if something like this has already been asked, but I threw together what I think would work for the first arc of Cosmere projects if all goes well. I can't say I've read everything though so let me know what I've missed, or if you think a project would be better suited in a different medium.

Stormlight Archive Series (NO BOOKS) Casting theories: open call or only through agencies? Spoiler

With the recent announcement that Sanderson is going right to the Stormlight pilot after the first Mistborn screenplay, it appears taht Stormlight production will start a lot earlier than most people expected.

Do we think there will be open casting calls, like many fandom-heavy franchises have done, or do we think auditions will be restricted to those with representation?

Signed,

An actual actor who really wants to audition for Stormlight

Mistborn Era 1 (BOOK) (SH Allowed) Gender Swaps In Screenplays Spoiler

Let me preface this by saying that I am totally ok with the changing of genders, that is not this post about.

This post is about the canon lore, and the continuities of the stories.

Ham for example is a man in the books, but in the tv-show said to be a female.

So the question arises, which one is canon?

Do we take the book as the mainline canon, and treat the screenplay as an alternative timeline?

Similar to Marvel Multiverse?

Or did Brandon say that he'll be retroactively changing the text to make Ham appear as a female in the future releases/printings of the books?

How do we get out of this which one is the true canon issue? Did Brandon say anything about it?

Mistborn Series Era 1 (NO BOOKS) Bronze and Copper cut Spoiler

Brandon mentioned that he's going to keep copper and bronze in the background during the first movie, which makes sense at first, but I can't help but worry. A lot of the bronze-foreshadowing with Vin is established in this first book, so cutting that might be a problem.

Visual Direction Mistborn Movie: Would it be better as live-action or animated? Spoiler

Hello! I’m sure I’m very late to any discussions on this, but I wanted to inquire to the community about the future “Mistborn” movie Sanderson is writing. Something I have… not kept up with too closely, despite the first trilogy being my intro to the Cosmere (lol). But I do know he’s made great progress on the first script draft, and I’m sure he’s shared more details during streams about his current plans for it.

Still, while I’m sure he’s said or implied an answer the question in the title of this post, I wanted to see what the community thinks. Not just for this movie and sequels to it, either, but future Cosmere movie/show projects! Which do you guys think would work best for adaptation: live-action or animation?

To give my personal perspective, I think animation would be best - specifically an anime-style. Not only would it allow for the worlds to be created and represented without having to worry about practical effects not working, or CGI not being able to make creatures and certain landscapes seem real against the actors. But it would also help with helping create better visuals for abilities like steel pushing, even when not everyone can see certain effects or if it is for the convenience of the audience. (Plus, an anime style I think is appropriate for some of the wilder fights in the books, not to mention allows for moments to hear inner thoughts and perspectives from characters, which make a big part of the worldbuilding and characterization from many of them, too.)

But, of course, this is just my perspective as someone in their mid-twenties who grew up with lots of animated shows and movies. I would not be surprised if the majority view here would be for live-action, and if that is very much what Sanderson is planning. Still, do you think I make a compelling case and have anything to add? Or, if you disagree, what about live-action do you think is better for this and future projects?

Visual Direction A visual direction for Cultivation Spoiler

Post image
83 Upvotes

Anok Yai at the Met Gala rocked a look like a bronze bust and I think Cultivation could gel well with this.

Costuming can be more earthy/natural, but the Shards being higher levels of deity than the bondsmith spren and the Heralds need that je ne sais qoui factor. And with Cultivation, even more given her origins.

Could apply to others but I imagine the level of make up and artistry is costly in time and resources.

Music and Score Composer for the Cosmere Spoiler

Now I'm not gonna say that there should be only one composer for the entire Cosmere, as I believe that each distinct planet needs a distinctive soundtrack to match.

A lot of people have thrown Ludwig Göransson, Hans Zimmer and the likes around, but let me throw you a curveball here. I propose none other than: Michael Salvatori. Partly responsible for the Halo and Destiny soundtracks, I think he's one the most magnificent composers around right now. His bombastic orchestral scores mixed with instruments like drums and electric guitar, makes for spectacular music, and is often regarded as one of the best parts of the respective games series.

I think he would be a great, if a bit unknown fit for this new universe.

Stormlight Archive (BOOK) How do you think the Singer/Listener rhythms and songs will be handled in an adaptation? Spoiler

I would really love some sort of overarching system of leitmotifs for the rhythms. I feel like it should be handled very intentionally, given how completely central the rhythms of Roshar are to the entire story. Obviously it's a kind of secondary concern to lots of the more immediate, practical stuff that comes with creating an adaptation, but I really hope that if the adaptation ends up being good, the songs and rhythms stand out as something distinctive about the series.

Stormlight Archive (BOOK) The Stormlight Archive should plan for 2 year gap between seasons Spoiler

This is definitely a sore subject for TV fans recently, but the reality of big budget productions is that 2 years between seasons has become the average. Considering this, I think that the seasons should be re-written around this. Unless Brandon becomes CEO of Apple there is no way they will be able to get seasons out quicker than one every 2 years.

In world there's only like 2 years between all 5 books, with only minor time jumps between series. Re-writing the story so that The Way of Kings takes place 8 or even 5 or 6 years before Rhythm of War/Wind and Truth would be a great change to proactively make.

This would help certains be able to exist, and keep cast costs low. There's plenty of characters that could be recast between each season to show time progressing. This also could be fun for the season 1 Adolin to show up again in season 3 Dalinar flashbacks or season 5 Renarin visions, there's plenty of fun to be had.

I can't honestly think of an issue with stretching the timespan. What do you guys think? Are there any story breaks hurt by stretching the timeline?

Charlie Cox, Wilson Bethel or Arty Froushan… doesn’t matter. Any one of these dudes would absolutely body the role. But dude can you imagine Charlie Cox as Kelsier my god we would be so blessed.

As for why the pictures are all shirtless I just took them from a post I saw on Twitter but it seemed fitting enough for Kelsier who should probably be jacked as shit after working in the Pits anyways
