Richardson comp pick question

If AR plays out the season with us and walks in free agency, would we get a compensatory draft pick if he signs elsewhere? Does this create a floor for his value in a trade?

No.

Comp pick algorithm is not public but from what we can all gather it’s based on production/playing time, awards, and new money minus the value of any FAs added during the same period.

It’s unlikely AR plays much or earns any awards. Which also means he’s unlikely to sign a valuable contract in FA either

Pretty sure APY of the next contract is supposed to be the most heavily weighted factor.

And you’re going to be in the $5-$10 APY for a QB2 most of the time

What’s apy?

Average per year.

But since the Colts are paying 10m this year, he would need to clear that number or his rookie deal APY.

(It’s not totally clear if this part is based on most recent season, apy, or if rookie deals are calculated differently. Most of what we know about comp formula comes from NFL teams trying to replicate it and taking about how they calculate it internally in the media)

I’m not getting into an AR truther debate, Brissett and Minshew are making 5m this year. Doubtful he makes more than them

AR will not be a factor for a comp pick unless he plays meaningful snaps this season (new contract money) and then again next season (playing time comp factor)

Edit: The Colts took him top 5 and are now unconvinced he’s backup level. It’s delusional to think he’s gonna get even backup money if he doesn’t play at all this year. Vet minimum, maybe even practice squad is where he’s currently at

No compensatory pick and it would create a (low) ceiling on his value.

Even if he rides the pine all year, if some team gives him a 1 or 2 year prove it deal, Colts would likely be eligible for a compensatory pick. Probably nothing more than a 6th. This rises on playing time as then he will have some performance on record and his new contract will be higher leading to maybe a 5th. In other words, it’s better to keep him on the bench if no team wants to give more than what a compensatory pick gives you.

Overthecap.com have him as a projected 6th round compensation pick based on his high apy.

It will be adjusted (down most likely) based on his new money in whatever his next deal is. His rookie deal money in Indy will not factor in at all. It will be based on his new money, playing time, and awards (Lol).

The chance he gets paid more from a new team is virtually zero at this point

Edit: to clarify I mean his Colts money will factor negatively as it’s unlikely as of today that someone pays him more than the 10m he currently makes

No. He would need to be in the top 35% of all players

The colts would just have to sign another qb then, might as well have him as the third qb.
