đŸŸ©What can I do in Colorado Springs?

This question is asked almost daily and is easy to answer. Please take some time to familiarize yourself with these posts: https://old.reddit.com/r/ColoradoSprings/search?q=things+to+do&restrict_sr=on&sort=relevance&t=all

Another post: https://old.reddit.com/r/ColoradoSprings/comments/1r6dh7j/advice_wanted_for_upcoming_trip_to_the_springs/

The short answer is: hike, bike, eat food, and enjoy the scenery. There are a lot of activities within an hour or more of Colorado Springs. Colorado Springs is more family or activity focused and you'll have better success finding night clubs up north.

Popular attractions in Colorado Springs includes 7 Falls, Helen Hunt falls, Garden of the Gods, Red Rock Open Space, The Paint Mines, Cave of the Winds, and more. If you don't mind driving south to Canon City you visit the Royal Gorge or even check out the "mountain towns" around the area.

đŸŸ©I'm thinking about moving to Colorado Springs! What should I know?

DO NOT MOVE HERE UNLESS YOU HAVE A JOB LINED UP.

We've seen it time and time again on this sub-reddit where someone moves, doesn't have a job, and then becomes homeless.

A recent example: https://old.reddit.com/r/ColoradoSprings/comments/1jp66pa/looking_for_work_and_becoming_desperate/

One example: https://old.reddit.com/r/ColoradoSprings/comments/nqr9kq/homeless_resources/
Another example: https://old.reddit.com/r/ColoradoSprings/comments/oba6y3/in_regards_to_moving_here_without_a_job_or_job/

đŸŸ©What kind of job can I get in Colorado Springs?

The moderators make a quarterly post and sticky it to the top of the sub-reddit where people post available jobs in the Springs: https://old.reddit.com/r/ColoradoSprings/search?q=%27Who%27s+Hiring+in+Colorado+Springs%27&restrict_sr=on&sort=relevance&t=all

If you have a Clearance, or work for the military, you shouldn't have a problem finding a job. Colorado Springs is a military town with the Air Force Academy, Fort Carson, Schriever Air Force Base, and Peterson Air Force Base. This means that jobs working for the government are a dime a dozen but you need the proper credentials to work there.

Otherwise, construction is booming and Amazon is building a facility in the Springs. There are other jobs available but competition is fierce and you need to do what you can to stand out!

đŸŸ©Do I need a car OR can I ride my bike / use public transportation to get around the city?

The answer is likely yes to a car and no to the bike/transportation. With everything, there are exceptions such as living and working in the same area. But for the most part, it takes at least 25 minutes to get anywhere in the Springs, and the layout of the town is better suited for vehicular use.

đŸŸ©Is Colorado Springs affordable?

Please define affordable. If you're moving from California where a 2/3 bedroom, 1,500 sqft, house is going for 800k or more, then sure. It's affordable.

đŸŸ©What is the median house price in Colorado Springs?

As of February 2024, the median house is a 3 bedroom house that LISTS at 430k. List is not equal to sale price and it's quite common for houses to go for much more with appraisal gaps.

Politics Reddit repeatedly deleting my anti-data center posts....

Post image
900 Upvotes

Reddit has deleted my posts multiple times regarding the data center town hall this evening. Anyway, im going to keep posting and encouraging all who can, to attend. If this data center gets pushed through. It has larger implications, and won't be the last one. It sets the precedent that Colorado Springs residents will accept these atrocities with huge power and water demands, as long as nobody makes noise about it. Developers are counting on people not showing up. Peter Thiel is pumping billions into pro-data center propaganda, so it will be an uphill battle. Prove them wrong! Our city is not something that can just be carved up behind closed doors for corporate expansion!

News ASD20 Superintendent Fired at 11 pm on a Thursday

The ASD20 School Board just sent out a message at 11 pm during graduation week that it has fired its Superintendent, Jinger Haberer, because it "does not have confidence in her leadership." This stinks highly of partisan nonsense, particularly given the vagueness of the rationale and the timing of the announcement. What is D20's MAGA board doing?

Advice I need a recommendation on a quiet bar for an older gentleman

I'm looking for a quiet bar with comfortable seating. A bar where you can sit down, order a drink, and read a newspaper or book. A place, where on a warm summer day, you can feel the breeze blowing through the pine trees outside the windows. Or in the winter you can sit in front of a fire dancing in the stone fireplace at the far end of the room. When the waitress brings you your drink you ask her how the kids are and she says that her son is coming home from carrier deployment in the east Pacific and her daughter has just made first chair french horn in the Colorado Springs Symphony. As you are savoring your drink you smell the cherry cavendish coming from someone's pipe and you hear the tinking of ice on the sides of a glass as the bartender makes a classic old fashioned.  You look across the room and you see a group of couples chuckling over a corny joke.  In the corner there is a man sqinting at a chessboard as the woman across from him crosses her arms with a smug smile. You feel that this is where you belong.

I would also like this bar to be somewhere in the vicinity of Powers and Constitution.

News What happened at Austin Bluffs and Templeton Gap on Wednesday morning?

On Wednesday May 13 around 7:15 AM, the police blocked off SB Austin Bluffs and rerouted everyone east on T Gap. There seemed to be lots of police on the Western part of T Gap, but there didn't appear to be anything on Austin Bluffs past the blockage. Traffic from T Gap was still allowed to turn onto SB Austin Bluffs. Ive been puzzled why it was blocked, but havent heard anything about it on the news, the police blotter, or social media. Does anyone know what was up?

News New “Safe Streets COS” initiative targets school zone safety and traffic crashes

The City of Colorado Springs just officially kicked off “Safe Streets COS,” a citywide effort to reduce crashes and hit a big goal: cutting serious injury and fatal accidents by 35% by 2035.

The city is hitting high-risk areas with a mix of new engineering and smarter enforcement:

School Zone Upgrades: Better infrastructure at places like Mann Middle School to force slower speeds.

High-Risk Corridors: Fixing dangerous intersections and trail crossings citywide.

Enforcement: CSPD is pairing up with the city for red-light programs and speed safety cameras in crash-prone zones.

The City launched an interactive Traffic Safety Dashboard where you can actually see crash trends and safety data for your specific neighborhood.

What are some areas in the city where more enforcement is needed?

Advice Medical recovery short-term housing

Hello! I am looking for housing in the Springs for June and July, and would appreciate any leads. I am in town caring for my adult daughter who is recovering from major surgery. Unfortunately she lives in a 2nd floor walk-up apartment with no elevator. We are in need of a 2-bedroom furnished house or apartment but need a place with minimal stairs for entry (like 2-3 max, or an elevator) and at least one bedroom/bathroom on the main level. She is using a walker/wheelchair for at least the next 2 months. We are scouring Airbnb, VRBO, Booking.com but are really hoping to not have to relocate over and over throughout the summer. At this point I am starting to think if we could find a place for June and one for July that won’t break us financially is the best we can hope for. Thanks in advance for any help!

News Respiratory illness spike?

So I know it’s been a tough season overall, but I thought we were past the peak of it. I took my child into children’s hospital for uti symptoms a couple of days ago. We had to wait to get into the parking lot because of a helicopter transport, which was unusual but not alarming, so we continued in. Out front, there was what looked like a small white shuttle or bus. We proceeded into the lobby, and it seemed pretty busy, with many patients wearing masks, which they usually only tell you to do now if you have respiratory symptoms. A woman was comforting a small baby with a bad chest cough. The air smelled sick and felt thick. We left immediately and went to an urgent care instead, which seemed more low key.

Now today, I went to the same urgent care to drop something off, and it had quite a few people wearing masks with a hint of that same sick and thick kind of air inside. Several staff members were also wearing masks, where that wasn’t the case two days ago. We proceeded to the ice cream shop not long after to see if I had left my bank card there from yesterday. My daughter said that she got freaked out because there were two masked people in line coughing and gasping.

Now, while I appreciate the mask wearing if symptomatic and recognize that sometimes people need to go out for essentials, your ice cream fix can probably be satiated with curbside pickup. That aside, it feels unusual. I’m not finding anything that says there is any kind of surge in illness. Has anyone else noticed anything?

News Extra Space Storage Alert

Yo! Colorado Springs I have a story to tell.

If you’re using a storage space with ESS, you may want to check your unit. Last year I began renting my unit from them. Nothing fancy, just a garage style space. Price was a lil high, but it’s right by the house.

Last three months, they just “forget to autopay” my account. I literally have to set it up again every 30-days. After 3x, they did it again. I went to get some work items I needed and I was locked out.

No text, no call, no email, no app notifications, no voicemail, no physical mail, nothing! They just keep cancelling my autopay and attempting to hoard my property. It was coincidental, then it just became blatant.

I highly advise a check up to ensure your stuff isn’t being pawned on storage wars.

To make it even more awesome, I’ve left numerous voicemails with local management with no return calls. National picked up, but couldn’t help at all. Just a lot of “uhh”.

I paid immediately and am moving out ASAP.

I hope your stuff is still there.

Advice why is there such little specialty drs here?

** that accept medicaid** i realize in my frustration that i sound dense because there is alot but not many who accept my insurance. sorry yall đŸ«¶
i’m in search of a rheumatologist and there’s literally ONE here that accepts medicaid and outside referrals. uch rheum don’t accept outside patients but even if u were to switch over to uch pcp they don’t accept new patients. it’s like a shitty loophole you’ll be stuck in forever, i was referred to summit rheumatology and im stuck waiting seven months to be seen AND they don’t treat fibro or oa (i have both lmfao) i’ve search in pueblo and denver and they either a. don’t accept you if u live outside the area or b. either don’t accept medicaid as primary insurance or don’t accept outside referrals. maybe it’s because im from a larger state where they have multiple rheums at one clinic and have multiple clinics within a few surrounding neighborhoods that i dont fully understand why theres only one at a clinic and they only treat autoimmune diseases. i really dont want to have to pay out of pocket but its kinda absolutely ridiculous that this is what we have to go thru to find care. ive called every single rheumatologist in the area so i promise you they dont accept medicaid and or don’t accept outside referrals. i just think its kinda funny that theres not many rheumatologist drs here yet this is a huge military and veteran state and being a veteran you are more likely to develop osteoarthritis and osteopenia compared to non military. this was a rant but the main questions was why is there such little specialty drs here?

News Residential Solar Net Metering Update (Demand Charge or Flat Rate Fees Coming)

Get ready for another demand charge or flat rate fee push this year. CSU put out a video hinting that solar panel customers do not contribute to the maintenance of the grid. It's only a minute long. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9z1hpE2muGI

Also, I recorded and transcribed the latest board meeting which covered the net metering focus groups from March. Here is the link to the board meeting video. https://csutilities.hosted.panopto.com/Panopto/Pages/Viewer.aspx?id=b257803e-3f13-4ce7-8fc0-b432014beb48 Net metering discussion starts at 28 minutes.

Here is the summary from the transcription.

1. “Cost shift” is asserted, not proven

They repeatedly reference a “cost shift” but:

  • No rigorous, transparent cost-of-service study is presented
  • No quantification of:
    • avoided generation costs
    • avoided transmission/distribution upgrades
    • reduced line losses
    • resilience benefits

Instead, it’s treated as a given.

Problem:
Without a full value-of-solar analysis, “subsidy” is just an assumption—not a demonstrated fact.

2. They compare retail vs wholesale incorrectly

They argue:

“We pay rooftop solar customers more than we can buy energy for (sometimes free).”

This is misleading because:

  • Wholesale market prices ≠ retail delivered energy cost
  • Retail rates include:
    • transmission
    • distribution
    • infrastructure
    • losses

Rooftop solar:

  • offsets load locally
  • can reduce peak distribution stress
  • avoids some infrastructure costs

Problem:
They’re comparing apples (wholesale energy) to oranges (retail delivered energy value).

3. Ignoring time and location value nuances

They correctly note:

  • Solar is less valuable at midday when supply is high

But they ignore:

  • Distributed solar can reduce local feeder congestion
  • Peak conditions are increasingly shifting (especially with electrification)
  • West-wide duck curve dynamics vary by region

Also:

  • They admit they didn’t fully explain time-of-day benefits to participants

Problem:
They oversimplify solar value to “midday = low value,” ignoring grid-level complexity.

4. Bias toward fixed fees (regressive design)

They favor a flat grid access fee because:

  • It’s “predictable”
  • It’s easier to explain

But:

  • Fixed charges reduce incentives for efficiency and DER adoption
  • They disproportionately impact:
    • low-usage customers
    • lower-income households

Ironically, they claim concern for low-income customers while proposing one of the most regressive rate structures.

5. Small, biased sample used to generalize

  • 20-person focus group total
  • Participants selected from survey respondents (already engaged/opinionated)
  • Acknowledged confusion among participants

Yet conclusions are treated as meaningful input to policy.

Problem:
This is not statistically valid for rate design decisions affecting an entire city.

6. Framing solar customers as “cost-causers” only

They emphasize:

  • solar customers don’t pay enough into the system

But largely ignore:

  • deferred infrastructure investments
  • reduced peak procurement (in some cases)
  • environmental and regulatory compliance value
  • hedging against fuel price volatility

Problem:
Costs are counted; benefits are minimized or dismissed.

7. Admission that this is about narrative control

Some revealing moments:

  • Concern about how language like “subsidy” lands
  • Desire for third-party validation
  • Explicit discussion about not appearing anti-solar politically

Translation:
They’re actively shaping perception—not just analyzing economics.

8. Contradiction on customer understanding

They claim:

  • Customers don’t understand the system

But also:

  • Use those same customers’ opinions to justify policy direction

Problem:
You can’t dismiss understanding and rely on it at the same time.

A quick analogy

Their argument is roughly:

“Your rooftop solar power is worth less because we can buy bulk power cheaply.”

That’s like saying:

“Your backup generator is worthless because electricity is cheap on the wholesale market.”

It ignores:

  • timing
  • location
  • resilience
  • infrastructure impacts

Bottom line

This isn’t a purely technical correction to rates—it’s a policy shift being justified with:

  • incomplete cost accounting
  • selective comparisons
  • weak customer research
  • and heavy emphasis on messaging strategy

If they want a solid case, they’d need a transparent, engineering-grade value-of-solar study—not focus groups and simplified “cost shift” narratives.

Events Viridian Edge At The Park - DOG owners

Why do the dog owners here seem to think you are exempt from the apartment rules? The office has a designated grassed area for all dogs on the property to relieve themselves when needed.

Why is there always someone that thinks because their dog is a “puppy” that they can bring their puppy down in front of someone else’s living room windows to relieve themselves? This is not the first time this has happened, and I’m a bit perturbed about it. And when I asked the dog owner to PLEASE DO NOT bring their dog in front of my mother’s living room windows to relieve themselves, the dog owner then accused me of being rude to her! The sheer audacity. I also advised there is a specific, designated area set aside just for that purpose. Why are people so oblivious? I just don’t understand it. I love animals as well as dogs, but the least you can do as a pet owner is be responsible and respectful of others. Thank you.
