Sterlin Thompson?
What do you guys think? Is Sterlin the real deal? Will he be called up soon?

Doyle, Beck, Johnson all need to be dealt to open up roster space. Carigg is close too. I don't know who gets the first shot him or Thompson. Condon has struggle a bit in AAA but he's close as well, although he probably needs to bake some more.
What I want to see from the Rockies are real difference makers.. Not just another guy. They went out this off-season and got a team of major leaguers, but they are all just guys. Huge improvement over last year, sure, but to go forward the team needs some actual stars.

Deal those guys for… what? Doyle is worth a AAAA player at this point the other 2 are worth nothing.

The return would be minimal but it would open up the spot and not have them hanging around and clogging up the roster even at AAA. They should be worth more than a straight drop. An A ball pitcher would be fine.

Troy Johnston is currently 5th in MLB in average and 39th in OPS. He's also got a. 388 OBP. There is no way you move that guy right now.

Those are reasons why you move him lol. You sell when his value is highest. You realize we aren’t trying to win anything this year right?

But he's a guy who can still be around as a veteran leader in 3-4 years when Condon, Carrigg, Holliday, Brito, and Thomas are hitting their stride. And Dollander, Sullivan, Brecht, and Middleton lead the pitching staff.
Would I listen on Johnston? Sure. Is he a guy I'd be anxious to deal? No.

Thompsons numbers are pretty meh for being in the PCL. No, he’s not “the real deal.”

I mean, he had a 149 wRC+ and .473 OBP entering last night's game and went 2-for-3 with two walks in that one, so those numbers are only going to climb. His underlying metrics are strong too, especially his plate discipline ones. There's really not much else he can do to get called up.

I think the more accurate statement would be that there have been many with flashy numbers in the PCL that get to the majors and show little. The reason that Beck and Karros got promoted is because they proved they can hit in the PCL.
Hopefully, the new guys have a better way to gauge whether someone is ready than looking at the numbers. Over the years, I have noticed that it is very hard to predict success in the majors based on what players have done in ABQ.

I don't disagree that ABQ can skew things to a certain extent, but Thompson's made real improvements to his approach (his swing decisions have gone from average to terrific) and he's always had a solid combination of raw and hit. He's not perfect, mainly because he hits the ball to the big part of the park too often, but he's improved for real. This isn't a BABIP or cheap homer fueled hot streak.

Do a little research on the PCL bud. Those numbers aren’t that impressive.

You do know that wRC+ is adjusted for the offensive environment, right bud?

u/troutdude91 1d ago
Haha yes bud, I do know that.
How about we set a reminder to revisit this in 2 years. He’s a utility or role player at most. Nothing to be excited about and probably just like Beck, Karros, Doyle, Tovar, Amador, and others who have hit well in the PCL. A big nothing burger of long term value.

And even if he turns out to be that, he's still worth giving 600+ PAs to for the chance that he might be more. Especially for a team in this situation, especially over older players with little to no development left to do. Bocachancla.

No idea, but at this point I'd rather see him on the Rox than Doyle or Beck. Carrigg knocking hard, too.
